Grant by Richard le Chamberleng, of Hallingeby, and Juliana his wife, to John, the prior, and the convent of Holy Trinity, London, of land in Brock and Gatesberi, situate as described, &c., paying yearly 27d. to the chief lords of the fee. Grant by Nicholas de Anesty to the canons of Holy Trinity, London, for the souls of himself, Margaret his wife, and others, of the land the canons held of Richard his grandfather and Hubert his father at Berkedene; of the 4 librates of land Hubert his great grandfather gave them in Bracking manor (Braughing); release of any right he may have to present to Bracking church; and grant of 20 solidates of land in Teye, which his grandfather gave them. Grant by Hubert, son of Richard de Anesti, to the canons of Christchurch, London, of the land in Berkedene which his father Richard granted them; of four librates of land which his grandfather Hubert granted them in the manor of Brackinges (Braughing), part of the 16 librates that King Stephen and Queen Matilda gave the said Hubert, with a proviso that if the heirs of Stephen and Matilda give him or his heirs 16 librates elsewhere in exchange, the canons shall have 4 librates of such exchanged land; of the land they had of his fee of Brackinges in the time of his father, and are to hold to the day he is made a knight; and of 20 solidates of land in Teye, which Hubert his grandfather gave them. Grant by the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London, to William called Prest, of Bouclonde, and Margery his wife, of land in a field called 'Monefeld' in Bouclonde, at a yearly rent of 3s. Grant by Adam de Stratton, clerk, to Osbert de Waterford, of land of the fee of Richmond in Beneggho, which Adam had by gift of the prior and convent of Bermundesey, at a yearly rent of 9s. 9d., with clause for distraint on the said land and other possessions of Osbert in co. Grant by Richard, the prior, and the canons of Holy Trinity, London, to Robert de Sandon, smith, of a messuage and land that Hugh Smith formerly held in Brakking (Braughing), situation accurately described, on payment of 6d. yearly and performance of various smith's services herein specified. [Herts.] A. 1011. Indenture of agreement whereby Thomas le Verly, of Little Hadham, and Alice his wife, demise to John de Melkleye certain land, a messuage in New Street,[Staundon: see A. 1013], land in 'le Holme,' Monemad and Wychemers, and a yearly rent of 3s. 1½d. in Staundone, if they do not by sunset on the morrow of Michaelmas, 13 Edward I., pay him the price of 12 quarters of wheat wherewith he has accommodated them: the grant of the premises, by consent of the parties, being placed in the hands of Benedict Bolt till the above-named date. Grant by Thomas le Verly, of Little Hadham, and Alice his wife, to John de Melkeleye, of Staundon, of a messuage in Staundon formerly belonging to John Pake, father of the said Alice, situate at the head of New Street. [Herts.] A. 1014. Grant by Thomas, son of Adam de Wrobele, to Saer son of Henry, of land in Senle, paying him therefor yearly ½ lb. of cummin, and 2s. to the chief lord of the fee. Grant by Thomas le Verly, of Staundon, and Alice his wife, daughter of John Pake, to John de Melkeleye, of all their claim to the dower that Agnes, formerly wife of the said John Pake, holds after his death in Staundon: Alice making oath on the high altar at Staundon never at or after the decease of the said Agnes to make any claim thereto. Grant by Henry Custaunce, of Mundane, to John Baker (Pistor'), of Ware, and Joan his wife, of a messuage with a garden and little holm in Stanstede of the abbot of Waltham Holy Cross, and a holm in the same place containing three acres of meadow, and held in capite of the abbot of Holy Cross by a yearly service of 5s. Stansted Abbots, Thursday next before St. Barnabas the Apostle, 4 Edward II.

Grant by Thomas le Verly and Alice his wife, to John de Melkelegh, of Staundon, of their messuage, formerly belonging to John Pake, deceased, father of the said Alice, situate at the east head of New Street, Staundon. Grant by Silvester son of Walter, to W. de Cleresvaus, of the land his father Walter held in Senly, with the dower his mother Matilda sold him for 20s. in the court of Alan de Sumer, for 40 years, paying yearly half a marc to the said Alan. Michaelmas next after the first interdict made throughout England for Stephen de Langethon, archbishop of Canterbury, in the reign of John, son of Henry son of Matilda, King of England.

Grant by Thomas le Verly, of Little Hadham, and Alice his wife, to John de Melkeley of their share of a messuage in New Street, [Staundon], land in Staundon situate as described, and a yearly rent of 3s. 1½d. issuing out of Staundon and payable by the tenants whose names are mentioned herein. [Herts.] A. 1027. Grant by Roger de Buutingford to Holy Trinity, London, of 1½ acres of land which he had of the said canons at 8d. yearly, in the parish of Lefstonecherche, situate as described. Herts. A. 1028. Grant by John le Bel, son of John le Bel, to John, the prior, and the canons of Holy Trinity, London, of a messuage and land at Rifford in Lefstanecherch parish; of any right he has to the dower that Albretha, his father's wife, held of his fee; of several annual rents due from the people specified herein for lands in Apsedene, Wakele, and elsewhere in co. Herts.; and of land in Refeld called 'Pyridune': for which grant the canons have given 15s. to pay his debts, and will give to him or his assigns daily, as long as he lives at London, a white loaf and a gallon of ale, such as they receive in the refectory, either daily or twice or thrice a week, as he requires. Grant by John de Rocheford, son of Geoffrey, to Richard, the prior, and the convent of Holy Trinity, London, of the service Roger de Esenden does him for the fee he held of him in Hertfordtingebiry, for land in Birchholt and Ho. Herts. A. 1030. Grant by Richard de Ware to Sir William de Valence, lord of Pembroke, for 8 marcs, of a yearly rent of 6s. 8d. that John le Sarmoner pays for a tenement in Hodesdone. Release by Robert, son and heir of the late John le Moyne, of Hertfordingebery, to the prior and convent of Holy Trinity, London, of a yearly rent of 6s. 3d. which they pay him for lands and tenements they hold in Rokefford, in Hertfordingbery. [Mddx.] A. 1032. Grant by Adam le Tailur, of Edelmeton, for 15s., to Richard, the prior, and the convent of Holy Trinity, London, of two acres in Edelmeton, in Goldfeld, situate as described. Witnesses:—William and Laurence de Forda, Hugh Peverel, and others (named). [A.D. 1223– 1252.]
[Herts.] A. 1033. Indenture between Henry Elveden, son and heir of Thomas Elveden, and heir of John Elveden, his grandfather, and the convent of Holy Trinity, London. After reciting a grant by Richard de Gatesbury to St. Peter's church of Bracking, which belongs to the canons of Holy Trinity, of the chapel of St. James in Gatesbury, with all tithes in the said parish (except the tithe of 40 acres in the field called 'Litelredyng,' which the nuns of Halywell hold of Richard), on condition of the canons celebrating four masses weekly in the chapel of Gatesbury, Elveden agrees with the canons to commute the four masses for two, to be celebrated weekly in the chapel of Holy Trinity, within the nave of the conventual church. The Chapter House of the convent, 14 September, 1487, 3 Henry VII.

[Herts.] A. 1035. Grant by John Cawmvyll to John Rothwell, clerk, parson of Wymyngton, John Adam, of St. Albans, William Basely and William Lodeford, of all his lands, &c., in Essenden, Bishops Hatfelde and Herteford. 20 August, 6 Henry V.
[Herts.] A. 1036. Mandate of Malcolm Musard to Robert, called Acard, son of Nicholas de Coleshulle. Has granted to Sir Hugh le Despenser the annual rent of a marc which the said Robert was wont to pay him, and the knight's fee he held of him in Coleshulle, and therefore directs him to answer for the said rent and fee to the said Sir Hugh. Fasternam, Thursday next after St. Vincent, 31 Edward I.

Grant by Thomas, the abbot, and the convent of St. James', Northampton, to Yseudia de Lichesbarewe, of land in Cristeshale, land and a messuage in Helmedon, land in Luffenhalegrave, Crawelefield, Linch, and Fulberue, situate as described, at a yearly rent of 2s. Demise by William, abbot of Ramsey, to Plesencia, late wife of Geoffrey, called the Vintner (Vinitar'), of Cruce Roys, for term of her life, of a messuage in Terefeld, and 12 acres of land forming half a cultura, called 'Oldefelde,' in the same parish, next to Cruce Roys, paying 10d. yearly and doing suit twice a year in the court at Terefeld for the same. Release by John, the warden, and the brethren of the House of St. Mary of Anestey, to lady Dionisia de Montchesny, of two acres and half a rod of their land in a field called 'Berdene,' situate as described, in exchange for land which John de Benden held of the same lady. [Herts.] A. 1042. Certificate of King Stephen to the bishop of London, justices, sheriffs, barons, ministers, and all his faithful people of Hertfordshire, that he has confirmed the grant made by Hubert, the Queen's Chamberlain, to the Church of Holy Trinity [London] . . . . . . Fragment.
[Herts.] A. 1043. Grant by Hubert, the Queen's Chamberlain, to the canons of Christchurch, London, of four librates of land in Braching manor, by gift of Agnes his wife and Richard and John his sons, portion of the 16 librates that King Stephen and Queen Matilda gave him in exchange for his land of Benedis. If however the King and Queen give him land elsewhere in exchange for the 16 librates, the canons shall have four librates of such exchanged land. Grant by Gilbert, the prior, and the convent of Holy Trinity, London, to Robert the Carpenter (Carpentaria), of Erdeley, for 10s. and a pittance of 2s., of land in Bracking situate as described, at a yearly rent of 18d. Witnesses:—Henry de Bracking, Theobald the Clerk, Richard le Meltre, and others (named). [A.D. 1260–1268.]
Essex. A. 1045. Indenture witnessing that Sir Thomas de Maundevile, knt., lord of Brumfeld, has enfeoffed Simon the Marshal (Marescallum) of the New Temple, London, in his water-mill of Brumfeld, and the same Symon has delivered the mill to Sawal de Brumfeld and Ralph le Despenser, for three years from the quindene of Easter, 24 Edward I.; and that Sir Thomas has granted Sawal and Ralph timber and carriage for all necessary purposes for the mill, on condition of their restoring the mill in as good condition as they found it at the end of the three years, if they do not wish to hold it longer. Witnesses:—Sir Walter de Wyduhelle, rector of Black Notele church, and others (named). Brumfeld, the Annunciation, at the beginning of 1296.

Confirmation by Alan, son of Richard de Faversham, to the prior and canons of Holy Trinity, London, for 6s., of the release that Richard de Melcleia, son of Robert, made them of 15½ acres in Bracking; and release by the same to the same of the whole half virgate of land in the same place that his father Richard held of the priory, of which the 15½ acres are a portion. Confirmation by Matilda, Queen of England, of the grant made by the King to the canons of Holy Trinity, London, for the souls of Matilda her daughter, and Baldwin her son, who are buried in the said church, of 100 solidates of land in Bracking. Confirmation by Richard I. to the abbot and monks of St. Albans of all liberties and privileges as herein recited on all lands they hold, prohibiting from entering on such lands any minister—steward, butler, chamberlain, "dispensator," porter or provost—against the will and consent of themselves or their successors. Witnesses:—B[aldwin] archbishop of Canterbury, H[ugh] bishop of Lincoln, Earl William de Mandeville, William Marshal. Ga[rc]inton, 17th September, 1 Richard I., by the hand of William the Chancellor. "This was the tenor of our charter under our first "seal; which, because it has since been lost, and while we were captive in " Germany was given into the power of another, has been changed.
