Indenture, dated 24 June, 4 Edward VI, being a demise by Ralph Egerton, esquire, to William Egerton, of Betteley, Jane, his wife, and Ralph, his son and heir apparent, of a pasture called 'Elmere Ridding' with a parcel of meadow adjoining, for their lives and the life of the longest liver; rent, after the death of Dame Eleanor, late the wife of Sir William Brereton, knight, 10s. Indenture, being a grant by John Egerton, esquire, to Master Richard Delves and Master Robert Fouleshurst, clerks, John Aston, knight, Thomas Harcourt, William Chetwyn, John Cotes, and William Hill, the younger, of his manors of Wrymhill, Chedilton, Haselwall, and Caldey, and all his lands, &c. in the counties of Stafford, Salop and Chester (except the jointure of Eleanor, his wife, and a burgage in Newcastle-under-Lyme, late of Henry Tuppe) for the purposes expressed in a schedule annexed. 1 May, 23 Henry VII. Schedule (in English) directing the feoffees, after his death, to apply the profits of the manor of Chedilton and lands there and in Haselwall and Caldey to the yearly value of 40l. for the marriage of his daughters, and for the payment to Anne, his daughter, of 10 marks yearly during her life, and to Eleanor and Isabel, his daughters 10l. each yearly till they have each received 300l., and to his daughter Elizabeth 10 marks yearly till she has received 200 marks (unless he provides otherwise for them), to William, his bastard son, 40s. yearly. And if he shall have any children by Eleanor, his wife, other than his heir, the sums appointed to his daughters to be divided among them and the other children, unless any of them be of evil disposition or marry contrary to his will or to the will of his feoffees after his death, in which case they shall receive only such sum as the feoffees think proper; the residue of the profits to be applied to the payment of his debts and performance of the terms of his will, and subject thereto to the use of the heirs male of his body, with successive remainders in tail male to Randal and Robert his brothers; his other lands to his own use and the use of the heirs male of his body, with like remainders. Lanc. Chester. C. 7005. Bond by Thomas Holcrofte, of Great Wolden, esquire, for the payment of 500l. to John Egerton, of Egerton, esquire. 28 April, 35 Elizabeth. Endorsed (in English) with condition for saving the said John harmless in respect of a bond for 400l. in which he and the said Thomas are bound to Sir Richard Molinex, of Sephton, knight, for the payment of 200l.

Indenture, dated 20 July, 19 Elizabeth, witnessing that Sir Ralph Egerton, of the Wrynehill, knight, Dame Anne, his wife, and Edward, his son and heir apparent, have demised to William Mounforde, husbandman, for 13l. 6s. 4d. beforehand, a messuage in Rownall within the lordship of Chedulton for twenty-one years from Lady-Day, 1588; rent, 10s., a capon and a hen; a heriot of the best beast at the death of each tenant; the tenants to repair the buildings and fences, receiving great timber, hedgebote, and 'tynsell.'

Indenture, dated 10 August, 29 Elizabeth, between Derby Ulster, of Bebington, physician, of the one part, and John Aston, of Lincoln's Inn, and Henry Bunburye, of Stanney, gentlemen, of the other part, witnessing that the said Derby, in consideration of a marriage to be had between Peter, his son, and Winifred, one of the daughters of John Aston, of Aston, esquire, deceased, grants 1a. land and a messuage thereon in the parish of Bebington, after his death, to the said Peter and his heirs male by the said Winifred or any other wife; remainder to Peter's heirs female by the said Winifred; re- mainder to the said Derby Ulster's right heirs. Indenture, being a confirmation by Henry Conyngsbye, esquire, to John Robbardes, yeoman, of land called 'Jordans,' held at a yearly rent of 2s. 6d., a messuage called 'le Bell,' near Mymwoode, held at a yearly rent of 18d., meadow called 'Ingoldsmeade' held at a yearly rent of 2s., lands called 'Bucklersburye,' held at a yearly rent of 8s., and lands called 'Fabes,' held at a yearly rent of 6s., all owing suit of court at his manor of Northmyms. 20 April, 27 Elizabeth. Indenture, dated Lady Day, 8 Henry VII, between Richard Harper, citizen of Chester, of the one part, and Sir Robert his son, priest, John Dichefeld and Henry Sherman, of the other part, witnessing that the said Richard has granted to the said Sir Robert, John, and Henry a messuage with an orchard in Forgatestrete, Chester, to be conveyed to Margaret, his daughter, on her marriage and to the heirs of her body; remainder to the said Richard. [Dorset.] C. 7020. Extract from the roll of the court of the manor of Helton, containing the verdict of a jury in a dispute between Hugh, abbot of Ab[bottis]burie, and Herbert, rector of Helton, to the effect that the rector may put sheep, oxen, &c. on the pasture of the manor without the abbot's leave, and that he has housebote, heybote, and faldbote in the abbot's wood, 20a. land in the north and south fields of Helton, half an acre of meadow, pasture for 6 oxen and two cart-horses with the abbot's, and for 200 sheep and 100 hoggets, wood for his hearth, and housebote, heybote, and faldbote. Will, dated 18 July, 5 Edward VI, of William Gold- smythe, of Sutton Valance: 10s. to be bestowed, on the day of his burial, on the minister, clerk, and people, and 10s. at the 'monthes- daye'; to his sons Thomas, Ralph and Creature 6l. and to his daughters Isabel, Mary and Eleanor 4l. each at the age of eighteen years, the sons to divide the share of a son and the daughters of a daughter dying earlier; other personal legacies; Joan, his wife to be executrix, and John, his son, 'overseer' of his will; his tenement in the parish of Sutton Valance to the said Joan, for life with remainder in tail to Creature (who is to pay 26s. 8d. to Thomas and 40s. to Ralph), remainder in tail to Ralph (who is to pay 26s. 8d. to Thomas), remainder in tail to Thomas (who is to pay 40s. to John), and ultimate remainder in fee to John (who is to pay 40s. to his sisters then living). Indenture, dated 18 July, 1586, witnessing that Sir Ralph Eggerton, of Wrynehill, knight, and Dame Anne, his wife, have demised to Robert Benteley, husbandman, for a fine of 20l. 10s. their messuage in Robert's occupation in Rownall, in the parish and lordship of Chedulton, with houses, land, and common thereto belonging, for sixteen years from Lady Day, 1592; rent, 18s. 4d. and two capons; a heriot of the best beast at each tenant's death; suit at the court and mill of Chedulton, and service with Sir Ralph at the Queen's wars; the tenant to pay in proportion to his rent to find men for the Queen's service and to repair all buildings and fences, receiving only great timber, 'trowse, and tynsell.' Indenture, dated 16 February, 7 Henry VIII, witnessing that Nicholas Thyrlowe, yeoman, has sold to John Hawke, of Newton, yeoman, and the heirs of his body, to be delivered at his death, all his lands, &c. which late were Bassett's, in Thryplowe, for 140l., of which 20l. is to be paid to him at once, 40l. to Thomas Pepes and Clement, his wife, his daughter, at his death, and 40l. to Thomas Draper and Margaret, his wife, another daughter, at his death, and the remaining 40l. is to be retained by John to the use of himself and Isabel, his wife, another of his daughters. Indenture, dated 21 June, 3 Elizabeth, whereby Sir Ralph Eggerton, of the Wrymehyll, knight, and Dame Anne, his wife, demised to Richard son of Roger Sherrad, for 4l. beforehand, a messuage called the 'Olde Fyld,' and land called the 'Pleyk' in Chedulton, for twenty-one years from Lady Day, 1579; rent, 14s. 4d., the tenant to do all repairs, but to receive great timber, to serve Sir Ralph in the Queen's wars, and to pay his best beast as a heriot. Oxford, clerk, and John Knight, the younger, of Tadnham, husbandman, his messuage, &c. in Bewsall within the lordships of Honiley and Bewsall, which he bought from Henry Ferrers, of Bad- disley Clinton, esquire, to the use of the said Clement and Joan, for their life and the life of the longer liver; remainder to the heirs of their bodies; but if Clement die during the minority of the heirs, to the use of Joan till they attain the age of twenty-one years, and then one moiety to her use and the other moiety to their use; remainder to his own right heirs. 4 November, 31 Elizabeth. Indenture, dated 5 September, 28 Elizabeth, witnessing that Sir Ralph Eggerton, of Whrinehill, knight, and Dame Anne, his wife, have demised to William Fawkner, of Harracles, husbandman, for a fine of 40s., land called the 'Mylne Poole,' with a cottage thereon and common rights in Wettelye Moor, in the tenure of John Fawkner, William's father, for twenty-one years from Lady Day, 1591; rent, 6s. and a capon; the best beast or other best good as a heriot on the death of a tenant; suit at the court and mill of Chedulton; service with Sir Ralph in the queen's wars and a con- tribution towards furnishing men; the tenant to do all repairs, but to receive great timber and 'trowse and tynsell' for fencing. Indenture, dated 2 August, 35 Henry VIII, witnessing that Robert Wrenne, of Thweyght, husbandman, has sold to Thomas Sherman, the elder, for 20l. all his copyhold lands in Yaxlee and Thrandeston, formerly of John and Robert Wrenne or Thomas Wrenne, his father, and all his other lands there (except those formerly of John Hanworth and afterwards of John Felgate) free of all encumbrances and of all rents except those due to the chief lord of the fee. Indenture, being a grant by William Frye, of Polruan, merchant, to John Pope, the elder, Maryn, his wife, John Clemens, her son, and to the first child of the said John Pope and Maryn, for their lives in survivorship, of all his part in all the messuages and lands in Playton and Sutton, and also his cottage in Playton, with a close called 'the Furs Parke,' within the parish of Tallande, all formerly of John Braye; rent, 6s. 8d. and the best beast as a heriot. 1 March, 3 Edward VI. Chirograph, indented, whereby Henry Mauntell, John and Laurence Baldok, and Thomas Kerver conveyed to John Castell, Laurence Pycot, Richard Preston, and John Knyght all their lands late of William de Wilyen and Agnes, his wife, in Dunstaple, Cadyngdon, and Kennesworth, and a parcel of the east end of their tenement, formerly of Thomas Wilyen, styled 'le Skynner,' called 'le Neuchamber,' reserving a free passage through the gate of the principal tenement in Dunstaple to draw water from a spring, and excepting a certain curtilage during the lives of Thomas Wilyen and Joan, his wife; the grantees to pay 20 marks at All Hallows next, and 60 marks by half-yearly instalments of 5 marks, keeping every thing in repair and not alienating anything till all payments are made. 20 August, 8 Henry VI. Indenture, dated 4 June, 7 Elizabeth, witnessing that Sir Ralph Egerton, of the Wrynehill, knight, has demised to Randal Walley, of Warmyncham, husbandman, a messuage, &c. in Newbolde, for twenty-one years from the death of Dame Eleanor, late the wife of Sir William Brereton, knight; rent, 12s. and the same 'duties, heriottes, capons and customes,' as Sir Ralph's other tenants of the like tenure and rent; the tenant to do all repairs, for which he is to have timber grown on the premises. Indenture, dated 24 October, 12 Edward IV, between Henry Bourgcher, earl of Essex, and Thomas Ormond, esquire, wit- nessing that it is agreed that the said Thomas shall enter on the possession of the manors of Swavessey, co. Cambridge, and New- halle, co. Essex, and a third part of the manors of Wolfehamston, Gyng Margerite, Hyrowthyng, Ovessam Hall, and Langton Hall, forfeited on the attainder of Thomas Ormond, knight, and granted to the said earl and Isabel, his wife (which attainder is held not to extend to the said Thomas Ormond, esquire), that all personal actions against the said earl, Walter Wircell, esquire, John Barnewell of London, fishmonger, John Ormesby, John Gange, William Fayrer, or any other of the earl's officers or tenants, shall be released and that the said Barnewell shall be allowed to occupy the manor of Newhall till Michaelmas next. Endorsed (in English) with condition for the confirmation by the said Francis of all acts done by the said Thomas as his attorney in a suit against Richard Raye, his younger brother, and for the recovery of a messuage and 3a. copyhold land at Crowchefeilde, in the parish of Hemelhamsted, to which he is entitled as next heir of Christopher Raye, his father, and, if such recovery be made, for the surrender of the messuage and land by him and Ellen, his wife, and the admission of the said Thomas as the queen's copyhold tenant.

Indenture, dated 15 March, 26 Elizabeth, witnessing that Sir Ralph Eggerton, of the Wrynhill, and Dame Anne, his wife, have demised to Thomas Chauner, of Chedulton, weaver, a cottage and two gardens with liberty to dig turf on the common called Whetley Moor, and 'sustaine and keepe his goodes and cattels' as other tenants of the lordship of Chedulton do, for twenty-one years; rent, 3s. 4d.; the best beast as heriot on the death of a tenant; the tenant to do all repairs, but to have great timber and 'trouse and stackwood' for fencing.
