Essex, yeoman, of a messuage, 80a. land and a fold-course in Thriplowe, on payment of law expenses and of 21l.; the said Thomas to have the option of purchasing the premises if subsequently sold. Indenture dated 10 June, 36 Henry VIII, witnessing that Sir Nicholas Stirley, knight, has sold to Robert Swyft, of Rotherham, the elder, gentleman, all his messuages, lands, etc. in Wodlathes in the parish of Connesburghe, declared to be worth 4l. yearly and clear of encumbrances, for 80l. Chirograph, indented, dated 12 May, 6 Henry VIII, witnessing that Clement Lowe, gentleman, and Isabel his wife, one of the daughter and heirs of John Sterley, esquire, have demised for ten years to Thomas Langfforthe of Mauncefeld, gentleman, for 20l., their fourth part of the manor of Bilborough, to be recovered against them by Anthony and Denis Lowe and William Keby, gentlemen, who are to convey it to John Smyth, clerk, Michael Lowe, John Cost, alderman of Not[tingham] and Richard Langforth to the use of the said Thomas for ten years, with remainder to the use of the said Isabel; the grantors to find timber for repairs and to have the right to mine for coal, paying damages as assessed by the said feoffees, and neither to alienate nor to encumber the premises. Notts, knight, has demised to John Waynwryght of Bolsterton, yeoman, for an 'income or gressome' of 3l. 6s. 8d. payable by Whitsuntide, a messuage and land called 'the Woddelaythes' in the parish of Connyshburgh for thirty years at a yearly rent of 4l.; the tenant to take sufficient wood for housebote, firebote, ploughbote, wainbote and heybote, not to sublet the premises to any person claiming to be heir of Sir Nicholas Stirlay of Lyndby or Dame Elizabeth his wife, and, when called upon, to find a jack, a sallet, and a pair of splents for a man to serve the king. Indenture dated 24 September, 18 Henry VIII, witnessing that William Crane, gentleman of the king's chapel, and Margaret his wife have let to Robert Erlyche, husbandman, his farm in the parish of Estwycam for twenty years; rent, 7l.; the lessors to do all repairs, and the lessee to collect and discharge all quitrents except the charges of the marsh, and to have ploughbote, firebote, cartbote and hedgebote. Indenture dated 20 December, 32 Henry VIII, witnessing that William Hawke of Thryplowe, yeoman, son and heir of John Hawke of Newton, yeoman, has sold to John Chapman of Great Shelfforthe, gentleman, for 80l., all his interest in the lands late of the said John Hawke in Thryplowe free of encumbrances except the jointure of Joan Swan, late the wife of the said John Hawke, and the quitrents due to the chief lords of the fees. Indenture of agreement dated 5 May, 2 Edward VI, of Laurence Wenyngton, gentleman, with Elizabeth his mother, that she shall occupy his house called 'the Hermytage' and two pastures in Plomley called 'the Rughe Hey' and 'the Hieghe Feld' on a yearly tenancy, paying him 23s. yearly and 20s. yearly to each of his brothers John, Thomas, James and Richard; she acknowledges that she has received all the goods of John Wenyngton, late her husband, and an annuity of 8l. devised by him to his daughters, and agrees to pay specified sums to his said younger sons and to Margery, Katherine, Eleanor, Margaret and Elizabeth his daughters, and to provide for the said James and Richard and to keep them at school 'unto they be put to servicez or otherwise preferred or orderet,' and for the said daughters 'unto they be maried or otherwise orderet and helped.'
