To John de Colby, escheator in co. Suffolk. Order to take the fealty of
Margery late the wife of William Pippard according to the form of a
schedule enclosed with these presents, and not to intermeddle further with
the manor of Hyntlisham, restoring the issues thereof to her, as the king
has learned by inquisition taken by William de Middelton, late escheator in
that county, that William at his death held no lands in his demesne as of
fee of the king or of any other in that county, but that he held the said
manor jointly with Margery for themselves and the heirs male of their
bodies, and that the manor is held in chief by the service of a nest or of
2s. yearly. |

of the castle of Old Sarum to be repaired where necessary up to the sum of
40l. 16s. beyond the 50l. which he applied upon the repair of the same by

To Robert Russel, escheator in co. Wilts. Order not to intermeddle
with the manor of Cherlton near Hungerford and a messuage, 80 acres of
land, 3 acres of meadow, 7½ acres of pasture and 33 acres of wood in
Cherlton, restoring the issues thereof, as the king has learned by inquisition
taken by the escheator that Richard de Hoppegras at his death held
nothing in chief in that county, but that he held the said manor there,
except a sixth part thereof, and the said tenements, and that they are held
of others than the king by divers services. |

To the same. Order not to intermeddle further with a moiety of the
manor of Weskyngton, restoring the issues thereof, as the king has learned
by inquisition taken by the escheator that Maud late the wife of Peter
fitz Renaud held no lands at her death in chief or of another in her
demesne as of fee in that bailiwick, but that she held the said moiety as
dower, after Peter's death, of the inheritance of Henry le fitz Roger, Peter's
kinsman and heir, and that the moiety is held in chief by knight's service,
and on 14 February in the 13th year of the reign the king took Henry's
homage for all the lands which Peter held in chief, and rendered them to
him. |

To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order to discharge the
sheriff of Gloucester of the ferm, extent and issues of the bailiwick of the
hundred of Kiftegate Greyston, in co. Gloucester, and of all things pertaining
thereto, from 26 July in the 21st year of the reign, and also John Musart
for life, as on the said day, in recompence for 356l. in which the king was
bound to John for the wages of himself and his men for the time when they
were in the king's service in Gascony in the company of Henry earl of
Lancaster, as appears by bills under the seal of Master John Waweyn, then
constable of Bordeaux, which he has surrendered to be cancelled, the king
granted the said bailiwick to John to hold for life without rendering
anything therefor, so that he should guard the hundred according to the
form of the statute thereupon. |

To the treasurer and barons of the exchequer. Order to discharge
Thomas de Rokeby, sometime escheator in co. York, and Richard, brother
and heir of William le Scrope, tenant in chief, of the issues of the manor
of Estboulton, co. York, from the time when it was last taken into the
king's hand, as the king ordered the said escheator to resume that manor
into the king's hand and to keep it safely until further order [see at page
106 above], by virtue of which order the manor was so taken, and although
Richard has not proved his age, yet the king, of his favour and at the
request of Bartholomew de Burgherssh, has rendered the manor to him
together with the issues thereof, from the time of its being taken into the
king's hand. |

To the proctor of the abbot of Fécamp, an alien, fermor of the abbot's
temporalities in England. Order to be answerable to William de Clynton,
earl of Huntyngdon, for 59l. 13s. 4d. and to pay him that sum yearly
beginning at Easter term next, as in recompence for the castle, manor and
hundred of Halton, co. Chester, which the king granted to the earl to the
value of 120l. of land yearly, to hold for life, and which the king resumed
into his hand for certain causes, the king granted to him 120l. and 20l.
which were lacking of the 200l. of land yearly with which Queen Isabel
and the king promised to provide him for life, to be received yearly at
the exchequer for life or until the king should provide him with
140l. of land and rent yearly for life, and at the earl's suit, beseeching
the king to cause an assignment to be made to him thereupon, the king
has assigned to him 27l. of the ferm of the alien priory of Arundell,
53l. 6s. 8d. of the ferm of the bailiff of Adryngton, an alien, and the
remaining 59l. 13s. 4d. of the ferm of the said temporalties, in the king's
hand by reason of the war with France, to be received yearly as aforesaid

Order to pay to Robert de Ufford, earl of Suffolk, 76l. 16s. 8d. yearly until
the king provide him with that sum yearly or until further order, as the
king lately granted to him and to the heirs male of his body 216l. 3s. 4d.,
in arrear of the 1,000 marks of land and rent granted to him for maintaining
his dignity as earl, to be received of the issues of those counties, and on
19 June last the king granted to the earl a third part of the manor of
Gestyngthorp, co. Essex, which Eleanor late the wife of Guy de Ferre held
in dower, which came into the king's hands after her death on the morrow
of the close of Easter last, to the value of 6l. yearly, and on 1 October
following the king granted to him the manor of Benhale which Eleanor
also held for life, with reversion to him, to the value of 133l. 6s. 8d. yearly,
in part satisfaction of the 216l. 3s. 4d., and the king wishes the earl to be
satisfied for the remaining 76l. 16s. 1d. Et erat patens. |

king's grant to him of 20l. to be received yearly of the custom of that

not to intermeddle further with the manor of Euston called 'Lytelhalle,'
as the king has learned by inquisition taken by the escheator that the said
manor came into the king's hand by the death of Walter de Pateshull and
by reason of the minority of Thomas, Walter's son and heir, that Walter
held it of the heir of Thomas Bardolf, tenant in chief, a minor in the king's
wardship, by knight's service, and that Elizabeth and Joan, sisters of the
said Thomas de Pateshull, are his next heirs and of full age, and the king
has taken the homage of John son and heir of Thomas Bardolf for the
lands which his father held in chief, and has ordered them to be delivered
to him. |

subsidies in all the ports of England and to their mainpernors or attorneys
in the ports of Newcastle upon Tyne and Hertilpole. Order to pay to John
de Stryvelyn 95 marks for Michaelmas term last, as the king granted that
he should receive yearly 140 marks in the port of Newcastle and 60 marks
in the port of Hertilpole of the issues of the customs, and now the king has
caused him to be satisfied for 10 marks of rent yearly for himself and his
heirs male. |

service in that county, but that he held the manors of Thrulegh, Bocton
Malerbe, Wornesele and certain lands in Borstalle and Shamelesford, of
John de Pulteneye, knight, as of the manor of Osprenge, by the service of
3½ knights' fees and of making suit at the court of Ospreng every three
weeks and of paying for those manors to the ward of Dover castle, 20s. for
every twenty weeks, and that he held 15 acres of land in Thrulegh in
'Gavelkende' of the abbot of Faversham. |
