March 6.
Westminster.
James de Burford, knight, acknowledges that he owes to Thomas Leggy, citizen of London, 80 marks; to be levied, in default of payment, of his lands and chattels in Kent.
Enrolment of indenture made between the king and Frank de Hale, knight, testifying that Frank, who has done homage to the king, has remained for life with the king with twenty-five men at arms, receiving the customary wages of war in that service, and he will take for his fee 300 marks yearly for life, both in peace and in war, of the issues of the customs in the port of London. Dated at Westminster, 1 February, 26 Edward III. French.

To Alfonso, king of Portugal. Whereas William son of William le Palmere, merchant, a native of Rouen in Normandy, it is said, who is arrested in the city of London at the suit of certain merchants of England pretending that he and other pirates had plundered their goods at sea on the coast of England on the day of St. Bartholomew last, by armed force, and brought before the council, asserts that he is a merchant of Spain and the fellow of Sanxius Martini le Canderer, burgess of Lisbon in Portugal, and is altogether guiltless of the said trespass, and was in Lisbon on 14 August before the said feast and made continual stay there until All Saints following, and has offered to prove this: the king therefore requests Alfonso to inform him whether William is a lawful merchant of Lisbon or of any other place in that realm or in Spain, and if he made stay as aforesaid, so that the king may be able to cause justice to be done in the matter. To the merchants of the staple of Spain staying at Bruges in Flanders. Request to hold conference on the said matters with the merchants of England of the staple there, and after hearing their reasons to take information upon the conduct of William, if he was in Lisbon as aforesaid and to inform the king of what they find that he may be able to do what is right.

To the merchants of England staying at the staple of Bruges in Flanders. Order to go to the merchants of Spain at Bruges, to whom the king has written upon the said affair, and to discuss with them the conversation and conduct of the said William and to inform the king of what they discover under their common seal, if they have one, or under a public instrument.
March 15.

To Walter de Mauny, warden of the Marshalsea prison, or to him who supplies his place. Order to release Thomas Fichet, knight, from that prison where he is detained for certain felonies in Somerset for which he is indicted and for maiming John de Forde, as is said, for which John appeals him, by the mainprise of Thomas Cok, knight, Robert son of Robert de Bilkemore of Wilts and Richard Stokes of Hereford and John Phelyp, of Trillowe in Suffolk, as for certain causes laid before the council it is ordained that Thomas Fichet shall be released until three weeks from Easter next by a mainprise, and the said mainpernors have undertaken to have him before the king on the said day to answer him for those felonies and John de Ford for the mayhem.

Enrolment of release by Richard archbishop of Nazareth to John Burgeys, citizen and draper of London, of his manor of Bedyngton, co. Surrey, with all the lands, rents, corn, chattels and possessions pertaining thereto, to hold until the end of thirteen years, for a sum of money which he has received from John for the whole of the said term. To Thomas de Oughtred. Although the king appointed him and William Basset, Marmaduke Conestable, Thomas de Fencotes, Robert de Twier, Thomas de Seton, Roger de Blaikston and John de Bentele in the parts of the East Riding, co. York, to be keepers of the peace and justices of oyer and terminer in those parts and he appointed the said Thomas with Ralph de Nevill, William Basset, Henry de (sic) Scrop, Thomas de Fencotes, Thomas de Seton, Roger de Blaykston, John de Moubray, Peter de Rychemund and Nicholas Gower, to do the like in the North Riding; yet for causes shown before the council the king wishes Thomas to occupy himself with the affairs of the king and the realm, wherefore he does not wish Thomas to be further charged with the execution of the premises, he therefore notifies Thomas that he must not intermeddle further with the execution of that commission. A certain plot of pasture called 'Fisshpole' in the manor of Conestableburton in the close of the wood there and a third part of the profit of underwood, nuts, ferns and dead wood with the cutting off of branches in that land; also 13 cocks, 30 hens and 350 eggs by the lesser hundred of the rent of bondmen and cotters there, yearly, at the usual terms, and John Smyth, Stephen Wryght, Robert Neuboud, Sibyl late the wife of John, John son of Geoffrey, Maud daughter of John, William Oust, Stephen Tydy, John Neuboud, John de Merton, Richard son of Nicholas, William Neuboud, John Fraunce, Geoffrey West, Joan daughter of Fulc, Katherine Couhird, Margaret Berier, Emma daughter of Denis, Isabel Northiby and John Couhird, bondmen of the manor with their chattels and issue and with the fines of the lands which they hold, when any fine is made for those lands or any parcel thereof only; also there is assigned to John and Aubrey in allowance of the residue of the said manor of Conestableburton with parcel of Neutonconestable and Merton, except 40 marks yearly rent therein with the said parcels, in which rent Aubrey was previously feoffed, and except the aforesaid parcels assigned to her in the manor, all the lands, rents and profits in Paghel, Paghelholm, Kayngham and Otryngham in the said liberty which belonged to John le Conestable, except a rent of 14d. issuing from 1½ bovates of lands which Richard de Feriby and Maud his wife hold in Paghel; also 4 messuages 39½ acres and 13 perches of land in Tharlesthorp which Richard Wright and Agnes Wryght, bondmen, Philip son of John, John Orre and Maud Warde hold at will and the rent of a farthing yearly issuing from the land which Simon Rouland holds in the said town of Tharlesthorp, and a third part of the profit of a windmill there yearly as it falls in after deducting the reprises thereof, and also Richard Wright and Agnes Wryght, bondmen with their chattels and issue; also a rent of 3s. 4d. issuing from a messuage and 2 bovates of land which William de Hauceby holds in Halsham and two parts of a pound of cumin issuing from a messuage and 3 bovates of land in Halsham which Isabel de Thorn holds, and a rent of 3s. issuing from a messuage in Hedon yearly, which belonged to Ralph de Mersk and 4d. issuing from a messuage yearly which formerly belonged to William Reyner of Hedon.

To John de Weston, Richard de Causton, Richard de Preston and Richard de Wycombe, appointed to arrest the goods and chattels of merchants of the Hanse of Almain in the city of London. Order to deliver to Tidemannus atte Brok, merchant of the said Hanse, 22 marks arrested by them from him by virtue of their commission, by a mainprise, to do his pleasure therewith, permitting him and all other merchants of the said Hanse to come safely to England until Whitsuntide next, without arrest or hindrance and to trade freely, in accordance with the agreement made before the king and his council, as Adam de Byry of London and William de Assh of London, skinner, have mainperned in chancery to answer to the king for the said 22 marks if they ought to pertain to him.

Memorandum that William de Irtelyngburgh and William len Veyse of the county of Bedford, mainperned for John to pay the said 100l. to the king at the appointed terms and they grant that if John fails in payment the said sum shall be levied of their goods and chattels.

Enrolment of acknowledgment of receipt by Thomas son of Richard de Stoke from John de Pokelyngton, clerk, and Nicholas de Staunford, clerk, of 200 marks, to traffic therewith for their own profit by rendering lawful account therefor, and to render the 200 marks with all the profits arising therefrom to them at London in the hospital of St. Bartholomew, Smythefeld, on the quinzaine of Michaelmas next, without further delay. Dated at London on Saturday before Palm Sunday, 26 Edward III.

Order to receive the attorneys deputed by Thomas de Aston, sheriff of Hereford, to make his proffer at the exchequer on the morrow of the close of Easter next, as he is at present upon the king's affairs in the march of Wales adjacent to the county of Hereford, so that he cannot be present to make his proffer on the said morrow. To William de Shareshull and his fellows, justices appointed to hold pleas before the king. Order to continue in the same state in which it now is, until St. Peter ad Vincula next, the process against Thomas Fichet, knight, pending before them at the king's suit, so that he may be able to set out with the other lieges to sea to repel the malice of the king's enemies, who propose to invade the realm.
