Mar. 29.
Eltham manor.
To the keepers of the passage in the port of Dovorre or Sandewich. Order, out of respect to the emperor of Constantinople, without taking of them aught for custom or otherwise, save for the victuals etc. which they shall buy, to suffer thirteen Greeks lately sent to the king by the said emperor, who with licence of the king are sailing over sea, to pass to those parts in one of the said ports with their servants, horses, goods and harness, any former command of the king to the contrary notwithstanding, so that they take with them nought to the prejudice of the king or realm. Westminster.
To John Walcote mayor of the city of London and escheator therein. Order, upon an information that a horse of 'pommylygrey' colour, which was of William baron of Hilton and is now in the keeping of Richard Sparke skinner of London, is by the mayor arrested and pertains to the king by reason of an outlawry published in that city against the said baron, to cause it to be brought and sent to the king's presence, for delivery to Robert Waterton esquire keeper of the king's horses or elsewhere as the king shall appoint.

Eltham manor.
To the mayor and bailiffs and other the king's ministers of Dertemuth by land and water. Order, upon petition of Richard Garner of Pomoude merchant, to deliver to William Glover a barge called the 'Seinte Anne' of Gerraunde, William Gauter master, with the wine therein as it was taken, and if there be reasonable cause wherefore they ought not so to do, order that the mayor and bailiffs shall before the quinzaine of Easter next certify the king and council of it under their seals, meanwhile safe keeping the wine until further order without spending it; as the petitioner has shewn the king that in March last at le Rochelle that barge was by Garnerius his brother and attorney laded with wine in his name and the name of other the king's lieges and merchants of London and to their use, namely with 49 tuns in name of the petitioner, 5 tuns in name of John Warner, 5 tuns in name of William Sevenoke, and 11 tuns in name of William Glover, to be taken to the port of London and there unladed, that on 30 March last, when it had sailed on the voyage into the 'trade' of St. Matthew off the coast of Brittany, there came four ships of the realm, one of John Brandoun of Lenne, Henry Bartelot captain, a second of la Pole near Suthampton, Henry Paxe captain, a third of Dertemuth, William Norman captain, and the fourth of Kardyf in Wales, John Payn and William Gilberde captains, with men therein armed and arrayed in manner of war, took the said barge and wine, brought them to Dertemuth, and are there unlawfully keeping the same in their possession. To the sheriff of Suthampton for the time being. Order every year to pay to Henry Dygoun 6d. a day during his life, and to pay him the arrears since 5 November 1 Henry IV, on which date the king confirmed letters patent whereby for good service the late king granted to Henry Dygoun for life 6d. a day of the issues of that county, advancing him to be one of the archers of the crown, and retaining him with that king.

To the collectors for the time being of the custom upon wool and woolfells in the port of Suthampton. Order to pay to Thomas Tredyngton chaplain 10l. a year and the arrears since 8 December 1 Henry IV, on which date the king retained the said chaplain to abide with him and perform divine service in the new tower of Suthampton, celebrating for the king's health, to keep the armour, artillery, victuals, guns, and other goods of the king which were and are there for the furnishing and defence thereof, to deal to the king's advantage so far as he might for the guard and defence of the tower, and to control all works appointed to be done within Suthampton castle, taking for life 10l. a year by the hands of the collectors for his salary and maintenance.

To the sheriff of Oxford for the time being. Order every year to pay to John Matloke 6d. a day during his life, and to pay him the arrears since 5 November 1 Henry IV, on which date the king confirmed letters patent whereby for good service the late king granted for life to the said John his serjeant, one of the archers of the livery of the crown, 6d. a day of the issues and profits of that county in aid of his estate, to maintain him in that service.

To William Bosoun escheator in Bedfordshire. Order to take the fealty of John son and heir of Henry Conquest of Houghton, tenant by knight service of the heir of John de Hastynges earl of Pembroke a minor in ward of the king, and to give the said John seisin of his father's lands; as he proved his age before John Longevylle late escheator.

To John Cokerelle, Augustine Martyn, Alan Scot and Thomas Halle, and to other the good men of the town of 'Orfordnas' co. Suffolk. Order to receive from Peter Rade of Dunkirke 'fissher' 40s. for their cost and travail for their rescue of himself and his 'fissherbote,' lately pursued at sea by enemies of France in certain barges, and to dearrest and deliver to him his said boat, by them arrested and detained in the port of 'Orfordnas' for that cause, suffering him to pass whither he will. To William Bosoun escheator in Bedfordshire. Order to take the fealty of Nicholas de Wodhulle, and to give him livery of the manors of Wodhulle and Langeforde, and the issues thereof taken; as the king has learned by inquisition, taken by the escheator, that by virtue of a fine levied in the court of King Edward III with his licence Gerard de Braybroke knight at his death held those manors by grant of Thomas de Reynes and others to the said Gerard and Isabel his wife, likewise deceased, for their lives, with remainder to the said Nicholas and to his heirs, and that the same are held in chief by knight service; and for one mark paid in the hanaper the king has respited his homage until Whitsuntide next.

To Thomas Erpyngham constable of Dovorre castle and his lieutenant there, and to the mayor and bailiffs of Sandewich. Order, upon petition of Vincent de Subiago and Janicus de la Boitaun master mariners of Bayoun, to dearrest and deliver to them two barges of the Isle of Normouster of the lordship of France, one called 'la Marye,' William Surryn master, the other called the 'Nichol,' Denis Renan master, and the goods and chattels therein; as their petition shews that divers men of France and Brittany contrary to the truce between the king and the French took nine ships and barges of Bayoun at sea with the strong hand, and that although the petitioners took the two barges of Normouster upon the king's narrow sea, the constable etc. have arrested them in the port of Sandewich with the said goods and chattels, preventing the petitioners from taking them out of that port. To the sheriff of Berkshire for the time being. Order every year to pay to Peter Edwarde 6d. a day during his life, and to pay him the arrears since 2 December 1 Henry IV, on which date the king confirmed letters patent whereby the late king retained the said Peter, whom he advanced to be one of the archers of the crown, and for good service granted him 6d. a day of the issues of that county for life or until that king should take other order for his estate, provided that a release should be made to the king of the wages of 3d. a day which he ought to take for his abode in the household.

To the collectors of the petty custom in the port of London for the time being. Order to pay to Isabel Fynbarugh 10l. a year for life and the arrears since 8 December 3 Henry IV; as by letters patent of 20 March 3 Henry IV the king granted her for life from 8 December then last 10l. a year of the issues and revenues of that custom, notwithstanding that by grant of the king William Fynbarugh her husband has for life the offices of keeper of Rysbanke by Calais and of the warren and conyger there, and of marshal of the King's Bench, with the wages, fees and profits to those offices pertaining.

To the customer and searcher in the port of Suthampton, and the keepers of the passage there. Order, without payment of custom or subsidy upon the bows and arrows, to suffer Henry de Ive knight of Brittany, who with licence of the king is sailing to Brittany, to pass thither in that port with two dozen bows and twelve sheaves of arrows, and with his servants, horses, property and harness whatsoever, any ordinances or proclamations to the contrary notwithstanding, so that he take with him nought else to the prejudice of the king or realm.

To the mayor and sheriffs of London. Order, when by the butler required, to admit to the office of coroner in the city of London John de Pokelyngton the substitute appointed by Thomas Chaucer the king's serjeant his chief butler, to whom the exercise of that office pertains, but to take of the said John an oath for his good behaviour in the said office so long as he shall stand therein; as for diver business of the king whereupon the said butler is engaged at his command in divers parts of the realm he may not have leisure to exercise the office of coroner in person.

To Richard Colyngborne escheator in Wiltesir. Order to give Richard Cheddre and Elizabeth his wife seisin of the manor of Hedyngton Cauntelo; as the king has learned by divers inquisitions, taken by the escheator, that Maud Cauntelo at her death held that manor for life with reversion to Elizabeth daughter of Robert son of Robert de Cauntelo and cousin and heir of the said Robert husband of the said Maud, that the said Richard has taken her to wife, and that it is held of the earl of Hereforde by knight service.

To the collectors of customs and subsidies in the port of Suthampton. Order to take of Peter Reymonde merchant of Melane, Matthew Reymonde, Mark Reymonde, Leo Reymonde and Paul Reymonde his brothers security, for which the collectors will answer, that they or their attorneys shall take the same to Italy or other westward parts and nowhere eastward save to the staple of Calais, and to suffer them after payment of the customs, subsidies etc. thereupon due to take thither two hundred sacks of wool, certifying in chancery before the quinzaine of Easter next the security so taken; as by letters patent of 4 July 2 Henry IV the king granted the said Peter licence by himself and his said brothers and by their attorneys in his own name and in theirs to ship two hundred sacks a year during his life in whatsoever port of the realm he should please, and without impeachment or let of the king, his officers or ministers to take them to Italy or other westward parts, paying in the port of shipment the customs, subsidies etc. and the duties of Calais as fully as if taken to that staple, and finding security (as above).

To the captain of Calais or his lieutenant. Order, upon petition of William Goossyn master of a ship called a crayer of Lescluce which is at Calais under arrest, before the king and council presented, if assured that his ship pertains solely to Flanders, to deliver it to him; as his petition shews that at Lescluce the same was laded with goods of the Normans, that on the voyage to Normandy it was taken off Calais as enemies' goods by certain men of Calais, and that he has dwelt there under arrest no small time. Proviso that the captain and lieutenant shall until further order safe keep all goods and merchandise therein found, and if any of them be such that without damage and loss they may not be kept, they shall put such goods to sale, and safe keep the money. Like order, mutatis mutandis, in favour of Joan Greindre of Hadenake anchorite, to whom by letters patent of 2 January 3 Henry IV the king granted for life in aid of her maintenance 8d. a week of the issues and profits of the said custom.

To the keepers, farmers, occupiers or receivers of the manor of Wylyngton for the time being. Like order, mutatis mutandis, in favour of John Lancastre esquire and Margery his wife, to whom Thomas duke of Norffolk made a grant for their lives, confirmed by the king 25 May 1 Henry IV, of a yearly rent of 20 marks to be taken of the said manor.

To the sheriffs and coroner of London. Order, upon petition of John Mildenhale prior of the new hospital of St. Mary without 'Bisshopesgate' in the suburb of London, to proceed to rendering of judgment in an assize of fresh force concerning tenements in London in the parish of St. Pancras London, notwithstanding that in the later writ hereinafter mentioned the king expressly ordered them not to proceed thereto without advising him; as upon his petition, shewing that upon an information that certain men, striving for disherison of the king's free chapel of St. Martin le Grand London, of the foundation of former kings and of his patronage, did in the city court or Guyhald of London arraign certain assizes of fresh force against Thomas de Stanley dean of the said chapel, otherwise called Thomas de Stanley dean of the church of St. Martin le Grand London, and others concerning tenements in the city and suburbs of London which were parcel of the said chapel, and that thereby the dean was daily vexed and troubled, being aware that if without advising him they should proceed therein disherison and prejudice to himself and the chapel might easily arise, the king ordered the sheriffs and coroner not to proceed without advising him in any such assize by whomsoever arraigned against the dean or others concerning tenements which were part or parcel of the chapel or thereto pertaining, nor to make any attempt whereby prejudice or loss to the king or the dean might arise, and shewing that by colour of that writ they did defer to proceed in the said assize by the petitioner arraigned against the said dean, by name of Thomas Stanlee dean of the said chapel, the king ordered them to proceed the former writ notwithstanding, so that they should not proceed to rendering of judgment without advising him; and now process has gone to judgment, but the sheriffs and coroner have deferred to render judgment by reason of the express words in the writ last mentioned.

To the sheriff of Cumberland. Order for election of other verderers of the forest of Inglewode; as by the cession of the late king the power of the verderers appointed in his time has altogether ceased.

To the collectors of the custom upon wool, hides and woolfells in the port of Kyngeston upon Hull for the time being. Order every year to pay to John Otteley the king's serjeant 6d. a day during his life, and to pay him the arrears since 25 November 1 Henry IV, on which date for good service the king granted him for life 6d. a day of the said custom.

To the sheriff of Bedford and Bukingham for the time being. Order to pay to Joan de Caulee 10 marks a year for life, and the arrears since 14 February 1 Henry IV, on which date the king confirmed letters patent whereby the late king granted for life to the said Joan, late a damsel of Queen Philippa, 10 marks a year of the issues of that sheriff's bailiwick.

Order in presence of the next friends of Ida daughter and one of the heirs of Amery de Sancto Amando knight, and of Gerard Braybroke son of Eleanor his daughter being cousin and the other heir of the deceased, both being within age, or of their attorneys, to assign dower to Eleanor who was wife of the said Amery, of whom the king has taken an oath etc.

March 12.

To the treasurer and the chamberlains. Order, upon petition of Garcianaldus de Salyes the king's esquire, if assured that since 3 April 1 Henry IV he has had nought of his wages of the household, to pay him of the treasury the arrears thereof from that date, notwithstanding that in the late king's grant and the king's confirmation it is contained that the same should be taken by the hands of the keeper of the king's wardrobe within the household for the time being; as that day the king confirmed letters patent whereby, for good and praiseworthy service, the late king granted to the petitioner for life wages of the household, namely 7½d. a day for the time he should be without the household and within; and now his petition shews that he has had nought thereof since the date aforesaid. Proviso that the king shall be discharged of a second payment of such arrears by the hand of the said keeper of the wardrobe. By K.

To Thomas Chaumberlayn searcher in the port of Cicestre. Order, upon petition of Peter Symonde of Midelburgh merchant, to pay him the 20l. for which he sued, or the 27 marks 3s. 7d. which the searcher has acknowledged in the exchequer that he has taken, and has found sureties to pay the same again at the quinzaine of Easter next; as that petition shews that, although the said Peter touched at the port of Cicestre with a ship laded with divers merchandise, and paid the customs etc. thereupon due, and after sold the merchandise, and for parcel thereof received 20l. in gold and silver, the searcher by colour of his office, untruly charging him with purposing to pass the sea, has taken and is unlawfully witholding the said sum, wherefore great part of the beans and pease bought by the petitioner in the country adjacent to the said port, and for which he ought to have paid that money, has remained unshipped.
