To William Thirnynge and his fellows, justices of the Common Bench. Writ of supersedeas until further order, by advice and with assent of the council and by authority of parliament to the council committed, in respect of holding the plea hereinafter mentioned, or any other plea concerning the manors of Brompton and Bukton or any parcel thereof; as at the request of Edmund earl of March, by petition presented in the last parliament the commons shewed that the earl and his ancestors time out of mind have been seised of the castle and lordship of Wyggemore, which are exempt out of any county of the realm, and of jurisdiction of writs whatsoever, and that all manors and lands within that lordship and the precinct thereof have continually without interruption been matter of pleas and judgments within the lord's court, by pleas and commands of the lords there and nowhere else pleadable and determinable without writs, until now of late Richard Laken esquire and Elizabeth his wife did sue out of the said Bench a writ of scire facias to the sheriff of Salop addressed and there returnable at the quinzaine of Easter next against Thomas Holgot and others concerning the said manors, which are within the said lordship and matter of pleas within the court of Wyggemore, and the king's will is to aid the said earl, as he is bound to do, for that he is within age and in ward of the king, and all his castles, lordships, lands and rights. Condition, that they shall be in chancery in the quinzaine of Easter next, or within the four days following, to answer touching what shall be laid against them on behalf of the king or of other his liege subjects.
Note that they did appear at that day, and with assent of the parties a day was given them in the octaves of Trinity or within the four days following under the same pain, by command of the king.
Memorandum of a mainprise under a pain of 200l., made in chancery 2 April this year by John Crouche 'vynter,' John Westyerde 'vynter' and William Coraunt, all of London, for Reynold Kentwode clerk, and of an undertaking by him under the same pain, that he shall make or procure no suit or attempt in the court of Rome which may tend to impair the laws, rights and customs of the king or realm.

To the constable of Dovorre castle and warden of the Cinque Ports, and to his lieutenant. Order to take to him the whole posse of those ports, and sufficient power of the counties of Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Suthampton if need be, and to arrest John Prendergest and William Longe of Rye and other evildoers their accomplices and partisans, if found within the constable's bailiwick, and to put them in safe custody until further order, and all goods, ships and property found with them, and if they may not there be found nor arrested, order to cause proclamation to be made forbidding any man of whatsoever estate, degree or condition under pain of forfeiture and the pain of treason henceforward to buy of them any goods or merchandise, to supply or comfort them, or to hold communication with them; as the king has information that now of late they have taken at sea great number of goods etc. of strangers, who are under the truce and armistice, and have committed other misdeeds to the prejudice and displeasure of the king, and that they are now in divers places within that bailiwick with the said goods etc.; and the king's will is to provide for their due chastisement. Writ of supersedeas omnino in respect of any process against the executors of John Warner, appointed with others upon an information that John Kyghalay and John Kent banished Englishmen, Wibert Freton a banished Frenchman, the captain of Boulogne, John Burnec, William Ryncelyn and the captain of Normandy banished from France and Uter Jonesson from Flanders committed at sea a number of robberies, misdeeds and attempts contrary to the truce between England and France and the appointment lately made at Leulyngham by the ambassadors of England and France, whereby war between those realms was like to arise, to arrest those banished men, robbers and evildoers, their accomplices and partisans in particular, them of Seint Malou and the Isle of Seint Briac, and in general all those of either realm who committed any violence, robbery or attempt contrary to the truce etc. with their goods and merchandise wherever found by land or water, or any process against the tenants of his lands, but order to proceed against others who did meddle therein; as John Warner meddled not in aught in that commission contained, as witness is borne in chancery.

Writ of supersedeas omnino in respect of any process against John Savage late escheator in Somerset, appointed with others to make inquisition what lands in Somerset and Dorset of John de Monte Acuto late earl of Salisbury, who forfeited to the king, were from him concealed and withdrawn, and who occupied the same from the time of that forfeiture, taking the issues and profits, and to seize those lands into the king's hand, and against his executors and the tenants of his lands, but order to proceed against those who did meddle therein; as that commission came not to his hands, neither had he knowledge of it, as Robert Rempston one of his executors has made oath in chancery.

To the sheriff of Bukingham. Order to give notice to Philip bishop of Lincoln to be in chancery in the quinzaine of Trinity next in order to shew cause wherefore there ought not to be a stay pending the appeal of John Balyngoun otherwise Balyngdoun otherwise Gardinere rector of Hoggeston of his diocese, writ of supersedeas, and order by mainprise of Robert Freman of Norhamptonshire, John Blakewelle of Middlesex, Richard Bothyngton of London and Robert Bostall of Oxfordshire to set him free, if taken; as at the request of the bishop, signifying that by his authority as ordinary the rector was excommunicated for contumacy, neither would he be justified by censure of the church, the king ordered the sheriff to justify him by his body until he should content holy church for his contempt and wrongdoing; but he has appealed to the papal see and for protection of the court of Canterbury, and the king has given him the day aforesaid, and Robert Freman and the others have mainperned in chancery to have John Balyngton there on that day, and that he shall prosecute his appeal.
Elmyng Leget and Alice his wife to James Hoget and Joan his wife. Writing of attornment, by virtue of a fine levied at Westminster three weeks after Easter 11 Henry IV between the said Elmyng, Alice, James and Joan plaintiffs and Thomas Lopham and William Preston deforciants of the manors of Stapulforde Tawne and Chatham, whereby the plaintiffs acknowledged the right of the said Thomas, and the deforciants granted those manors to the said Elmyng and Alice and to the heirs of the said Elmyng subject to a yearly rent of 20l., and by virtue of a deed whereby those deforciants gave the said rent to the said James and Joan and to the heirs and assigns of the said James; and they have put them in possession of the said rent by payment of 6d. Dated 28 April 11 Henry IV.

Sara de Ultyng, daughter and heir of Nicholas de Ultyng in her widowhood, being cousin and heir of Thomas de Ultyng and tenant by inheritance of his manor of Ultyng, to Thomas abbot of St. Albans, of exempt jurisdiction, John prior of Hatfelde Peverell in the diocese of London and the monks serving God and St. Alban in that priory, and to their successors. Grant that they may in time to come celebrate in the priory church, at any altar the prior and his brethren and their successors shall decree or appoint, a chantry founded at the altar of the Virgin in the chapel of St. Mary, which Thomas de Ultyng built at his own cost, for his soul and the souls of his heirs, any ordinances or covenants by him made concerning the same to the contrary notwithstanding, and covenant that the abbot and prior and their successors shall not be troubled by reason of any penal covenant made between Hugh de Everisdone late abbot, Peter de Maydenford late prior and Thomas de Ultyng because the chantry shall cease in the said chapel; and recital (full text) of the charter of foundation of that chantry, dated in the said priory the morrow of St. Faith 1317, 11 Edward II, whereby in consideration of his merits and of his favour, services and protection to the priory, the said abbot, prior and monks granted and bound themselves and their successors to Thomas de Ultyng, his heirs and assigns, being tenants of his manor called Ultyng in the town of Hatfeld Peverell, to maintain a chantry for ever at the altar of the Virgin in the new chapel of St. Mary by him built at his cost as an aisle within their exempt church of Hatfeld Peverell, wherein one of the monks dwelling at the priory, to be by the prior appointed, should celebrate daily for the souls of the said Thomas, Maud his wife, his father and mother and all his ancestors and successors, granting them to participate in all masses, prayers etc., in the priory, two coats (cotucas) of new cloth according to the rule of St. Benedict in the octaves of Allhallows, price half a mark, for two monks dwelling in the priory, and half a mark for spices to be distributed by the subprior among the monks there dwelling, the prior excepted, for which sums Thomas de Ultyng gave one mark of yearly rent as witnessed in a charter of feoffment, with covenant that if the mass should not be celebrated for one whole quinzaine, saving lawful impediments of interdict, suspension etc., two monks should celebrate for one month, but if there should be no celebration for a whole year, and this should be proved by credible and lawful persons, for every year in which they should make default the prior should be bound in 5 marks to be levied of his lands, goods and chattels; and warning by abbot Hugh that all this should be done under pain of major excommunication, which sentence should be published in chapter of the priory every year on the feast of Allhallows, and fulminated against all who should contravene, gainsay or rebel against these ordinances.
