Memorandum of acknowledgment, 10 December.
Memorandum of a mainprise under a pain of 300l., made in chancery 10 December this year by Thomas White 'irmonger,' John Walssh 'goldsmyth,' both of London, and Walter Cursoun of Lenne for Geoffrey Gatele of Lenne, to have him in chancery upon warning received.

William prior of the house and church of St. Botolph Colcestre and the convent of the one part and Edmund Bekenham warden of the house of scholars of 'Merton Halle' in Oxford and the scholars thereof of the other part. Indenture reciting an ordinance made by the council in 20 Edward I, that men of religion and all other ecclesiastical persons should pay to tenths and moieties of tenths thereafter granted for goods arising of lands and possessions acquired before that date, and of lands etc. acquired thereafter should contribute with laymen to fifteenths and moieties of fifteenths, by virtue whereof Richard Brome the prior's predecessor was assessed at 10s. 8d. for his goods in Gamelyngey, and William Westbrome the prior's last predecessor and all other his predecessors since that ordinance have been assessed by the assessors of that town, and have paid for their temporalities there 10s. 8d. for a whole tenth and 5s. 4d. for the moiety of a tenth, which sums were current in demand against them in the exchequer by reason of a pension or yearly rent of 4 marks claimed by them to issue from one mediety of the church of Gamelyngey appropriated to the said warden and scholars, and another of 4 marks from the other mediety thereof heretofore in possession of the parsons, and reciting a writ obtained by the said late prior William before the justices of the late King's Bench for 420 marks arrears of the said 4 marks, counting that Richard Brome was seised of that rent payable at Colchestre co. Essex by the hands of John de Mora late warden, being parson of one mediety aforesaid, that the said William and all his predecessors were thereof [seised] by the hands of John de Mora and his predecessors time out of mind, until 105 years before the date of that writ the said John withdrew the same, refusing to pay it, and that process being continued until the parties pleaded to an issue of the country, whether so it was or no, the late prior died while that process was pending, whereupon by mediation of friends the now prior and convent and the now warden and scholars have made an agreement for themselves and their successors, and witnessing a release by the prior and convent to the warden and scholars of the said yearly rent of 4 marks and all arrears thereof, and of all actions and demands by reason of the same, and to the parson of the other mediety of the rent aforesaid and arrears, the warden and scholars granting to them and their successors that they will acquit them of all tenths, moieties of tenths and other quotas, taxes and imposts whatsoever henceforward demanded upon those annuities or pensions by virtue of any grant made by the clergy of the province or any other authority, and witnessing a grant made by the warden and scholars that, if by default of them or their successors the prior or his successors shall be distrained or impleaded by writs of the king or otherwise troubled for any tenths etc., and shall give warning thereof at Gamelyngey church to the warden or his successors, their bailiffs or farmers, and the warden or his successors shall not within one quarter of a year acquit and save them harmless of the same and of their costs and damages, the warden and his successors shall be bound to pay them 40s. in name of a pain. Memorandum of acknowledgment by the warden and scholars at Oxford 2 December before the prior of St. Frideswide Oxford, by virtue of a dedimus potestatem which is on the chancery file for this year.

Order upon his allegiance, as he loves the king and the estate of the realm and desires the honour and advantage of the church of England, to summon a convocation of the clergy of his province in the cathedral church of St. Peter York or elsewhere before the octaves of St. Hilary next.
