Maud who was wife of John late lord Lovell and Holande and Thomas bishop of Durham, John Wilcotes esquire, John Cottusmore, John Juyn, John Barton the younger, John Catesby, William Palmer, Robert Euyngton, Henry Briddesmere and Edward Rede clerk. Writing indented, reciting a charter sealed with her seal and enrolled in chancery, dated 1 March 6 Henry V, whereby she gave to the said bishop and the others, and to their heirs, the manor of Bagworth and Thornton co. Leycester and all her lands, rents, reversions and services in Bagworth and Thornton, and that at her request they after made grants for life to Master Thomas Colton of 100s. a year, to Joan Denselle of 100s., to Thomas Compworth of 5 marks, to Thomas Newnton of 100s., to John Gwyn of 10 marks, to Agnes Sutton of 4 marks, to Margery Sutton of 40s., to John Harlebat of 40s., to Henry Lambkyn of 40s., to John Whyte of 40s., to Thomas Trumpet of 40s., to John Porter 'boteler' of 26s. 8d., to Richard Wyse 'cooke' of 26s. 8d., to Nicholas Boteler of 20s. and to Nicholas Charetter of 13s. 4d. a year, to be taken severally of the manor and lands aforesaid, and declaring her will and intent that with licence of the king and others concerned the hospital of St. James and St. John Brackele, which is of her advowson, shall within ten years be by her or her heirs transformed and erected into a house of the order of friars preachers, consisting of thirteen of that order, of whom ten shall be chaplains and one of them shall be prior, to celebrate divine service for her health while she shall live, for her soul after death, and the souls of her said husband, their ancestors and heirs, and of all the faithful departed, that after such transformation the same shall be called the house of the order of friars preachers Brackele, that all possessions and rights of the hospital shall remain annexed to the prior and friars and their successors and to the said house, that by virtue of the licences aforesaid they shall be enabled to acquire and hold those possessions and others, and that when such transformation shall be made the said bishop and the others shall make a feoffment of the said manor and lands to her or her heirs in fee simple subject to payment of those annuities, if not then determined, and if the hospital may not be transformed as aforesaid, they shall after the said ten years of the annuities aforesaid, when the same shall fall in, find four chaplains if the annuities so falling in be sufficient, otherwise three, two or one, to celebrate as aforesaid in the hospital every day until provision shall by her or her heirs be made for the master of the hospital and his successors of possessions thereof spiritual or temporal to the value of 20l. a year to maintain those four chaplains, with proviso that after amortisation of such possessions the bishop and the others, their heirs or assigns, shall make to her or her heirs a feoffment of the said manor and lands in fee simple, subject to payment of the said annuities if not then determined, and to support of all other charges incumbent thereupon. John Jaybien to Robert James, John Disney, Robert Ingram and Reynold Wellisley parson of Talcarne, and to the heirs and assigns of the said Reynold. Quitclaim with warranty of all the messuages, lands, rents and services in Dene, the borough and manor and the sanctuary of Leskyrret, and in 'Northertrenant' otherwise 'Nethertrenant,' Kylgalyn otherwise Curgalyn, Kuldreyneke and Litilforde which were of William Dene the elder and William Dene the younger, and whereof Robert James and the others are now seised, one croft in the said sanctuary excepted which John Colys has by grant of John Jaybien; and proviso that this warranty shall extend only to bar John Jaybien and his heirs, and not to recovery of the value against strangers. Surrender of a new building called 'Popescorner' with three shops situate towards 'Lurteborne' on the north and a tenement of the prior of St. John Baptist Wells on the south, and of 2 acres of arable land in the middle forlang by the path leading to 'Bolowtre,' whereof the said Alice and Walter her son made a lease to the said Thomas for sixty years from the Annunciation 6 Henry V at a yearly rent of 46s.
