May 13. Westminster. |
To the sheriff of York. Strict order to cause proclamation to
be made, that none of the lieges under pain of forfeiture shall
repair to Denmark or any place therein for any traffic or to get
fish save to the town of Norbarne where a staple is established;
as the king has learned that lately the king of Denmark for
particular causes has caused proclamation to be made in Denmark
and other his territories, dominions and jurisdictions, that all
English lieges willing to repair thither for traffic or to get fish shall
touch at Norbarne and not at Fynmarke nor elsewhere within
his realm etc. save Norbarne, where he has appointed his staple
for traffic with them; and the king's will is that this be brought
to the knowledge of his lieges, lest they should make any attempt
contrary to the said order and proclamation, especially as the
king of Denmark is of the friendship of the king and realm. |

To the sheriff of Kent. Strict order at his peril to cause
proclamation to be made, that men of the townships of Kent
whatsoever shall under the pains in the statutes contained keep
watch at night, search day and night to spy thieves, and apply
their whole power to pursue and take them, as they are bound to
do according to the statutes, and order himself to take with him
a sufficient power, if need be, and to repair from time to time to
the towns, woods and other places where robberies and thefts are
most often committed, and to give diligence to spy out and take
the thieves, that such robberies etc. be not hereafter by his
default or lukewarmness committed in his bailiwick; as the king
has true information by report of many that in singular the
counties of England great number of robberies and thefts are
now of late committed by thieves gathering together in excessive
number, more than used to be in times past, in contempt of the
king, in breach of the peace, and to the terror of the lieges,
whereat the king is much disturbed, especially because the sheriff
and men of the townships of Kent give not due diligence to spy
out and take the thieves according to the statute of Winchester
and other statutes, and his will is to provide a remedy, and that
those statutes be kept in every article. |
