Oct. 22. To the chief butler or his lieutenant in the town of Bristol etc. Order to give the prior and convent or Henton of the Carthusian order, two tons of sweet wine annually, to wit 'Osey' or 'Bastard' at their choice, and the arrears. Since by letters patent dated 4 March, 1 Edward III, that king granted the said house a tun of wine annually, which King Richard II confirmed, and further granted them another tun of sweet wine in perpetual alms at the hands of the chief butler of Bristol etc.

Nov. 23. To the escheator in Suffolk. Order to remove the king's hand, and to meddle no more with a close containing thirteen acres of pasture in Becclys, since by inquisition before Louis Wyngefeld, late escheator, it was learnt that Thomas Pecke, chaplain of Norwich, was seised thereof in his demesne as of fee, held of the king in chief by service unknown: and being so seised, on 9 April, 7 Henry VII, he erected a wooden cross thereon, asserting that he held the said close of the prior of St. John of Jerusalem by a service, not being in contempt of the living or contrary to the form of the statute: and the inquisition having been read in chancery, and the matter discussed, it seemed good to the justices that the inquisition was invalid, and the king's hand should be removed thence.

Jan. 29. To the sheriff of Warwick. Order to pay Joan viscountess Lysle, twenty marks a year during the minority of her son John and the arrears since the death of her husband, Edward Grey viscount Lysle: since by inquisition before Thomas Mountford, late escheator, it was learnt that the late king by letters patent dated 28 June, 1 Richard III, created Edward Grey to be viscount Lysle with twenty marks a year to support his dignity out of the issues of Warwickshire, such as Thomas Talbot and other viscounts formerly enjoyed, and the same Edward died so seised on 7 July, 7 Henry VII, and John his son was eleven years of age: and on 30 November last (see No. 623, p. 183) the king granted to the said Joan the custody of all his manors etc. in Warwickshire still in his hands by reason of the minority of John, and on 3 December the said annuity of twenty marks.

To the customers or collectors of customs in the town of Cirencestre (rectius Chichestre) etc. Order to pay Richard Guldeford, knight of the king's body, and Edward his son, the sums undermentioned out of the said customs and the arrears since 1 December last: on which date by letters patent the king appointed them to be joint masters of his armature within the Tower of London, to hold the same by themselves or sufficient deputy for their lives with wages of 12d. a day for themselves, 6d. a day for a yeoman and 3d. a day for a groom.

Nov. 12. To the escheator in Devon. Order to remove the king's hand and to give seisin to Humphrey son of John Walderond of the rents and services undermentioned, taken into the king's hand by reason of the death of John and the nonage of Humphrey, who has now proved his age before the escheator: since it was learnt by inquisition before William Kelly, late escheator, that John Walderond was seised of a moiety of the manor of Morlegh, that John Herte held a messuage and 40 acres of land therein by military service at a rent of 4s.: John Turclyffe a messuage and 30 acres: and John Walderond was also seised of the manors of Newlond and Stenhall in the same county the day he died: and by charter dated 26 July, 3 Richard III, he enfeoffed John More therein, till he should have received 153l. 6s. 8d. from its revenues: but John Herte and John Turclyffe did not account to John More for their rents and services. And the manor of Morelegh is held of the king in chief as of the honour of Plympton by military service: and on 20 October, 1 Henry VII, the king granted that honour to Edward earl of Devon with all knight's fees and advowsons thereto pertaining.

Order to take fealty and to make a partition between Agatha and Joan, the daughters of Richard Lovell, who held of the king in chief: since John Wayte esquire who married Agatha and George Rotheram who married Joan, have proved their wives' ages before Richard Restwold excheator, by virtue of letters patent directed to John Mordaunt: and for half a mark paid in the hanaper, the king has respited the homages of the said John, Agatha, George and Joan to Christmas next, provided that in the above partition the lands held in chief be equally divided.

Order to remove the king's hand and to give seisin to Thomas Seyntgeorge, having taken fealty of him, for the lands of Richard Seyntgeorge his father: since he has proved his age before the escheator: and for half a mark paid in the hanaper, the king has respited his homage to Christmas next.

April 24. To the escheator in Cornwall. Order to remove the king's hands and to meddle no more with the lands of William Maleerbe in that county: since it is learnt by inquisition that the said William held no lands of the king the day he died, but was seised in his demesne as of fee of a burgage in Leskert, and of nine messuages, two carucates, and fifteen acres of wood in Curture, Trethowell, Pencredi and Bolaith, and of a messuage and a hundred acres of land in Trenake co. Cornwall: and being so seised, he died: and this burgage is held of others than the king: and Joan wife of Richard Ferrers is his next heir. Order to the escheator to deliver to the said Joan any issues received from the above lands since the death of the said William Maleerbe.

Order to take fealty of John archbishop of Canterbury, Gilbert Ormoston clerk, James Hobart, David Orell and James Bradshawe clerk, and to give them seisin of a moiety of the manor of Ketylbergh co. Suffolk: since it is learnt by inquisition that Margery Marchall and Elizabeth Clere, widows, were seised of the manor and advowson of Ketylbergh or Ketylberowshill and of lands etc. therein, and in Buttley, Glemeham, Swyftlyng, Godstone, Boyton, Parham and Framlyngham in demesne as of fee: and being so seised, the said Margery, without the king's license, enfeoffed the said archbishop etc. to her use: and the said manor is held of the king in chief by service of one-ninth of a knight's fee: and after the death of Margery, her moiety was taken into the king's hands by reason of the trespass: but for a fine paid in the hanaper, the king has pardoned the trespass, and has postponed the homage of the archbishop etc. to the Purification next.

May 14. To the bailiffs and citizens of Canterbury for the time being. Order to pay James Isaak esquire the arrears of an annual rent of 7l. 10s. since 25 September, 8 Henry VII: on which date Richard Mayhewe granted to him the same: since on 12 August, 7 Henry VII, the king granted the said Richard an annual rent of that amount, derived from the fee farm of the city of Canterbury, being his proportion of the 30l. a year, as lineal descendant of William Cundy, to whom King Edward III granted the same, the said Richard being son of Thomas son of Henry son of Joan daughter of Constance sister of William Cundy, the grant being held of the king in chief by fealty only for all services, with license to assign the same to James Isaak.

May 5. To the sheriff of Essex for the time being. Order to pay Henry earl of Essex, 20l. a year, and the arrears since Michaelmas, 7 Henry VII, out of the issues of that county: since by inquisition before Nicholas Clyvelay escheator, it was learnt that King Edward IV in his first year, created Henry viscount Bourgchier earl of Essex, with all prerogatives to that dignity attached, to him and his heirs male with 20l. a year to maintain the same, by letters patent: and the said Henry died so seised, and Henry now earl is his next heir, being son of William Bourgchier his son: and on 27 September last by letters patent the king granted the now earl that without proof of age by course of chancery, he should enjoy all and singular castles, demesnes, manors, lands and tenements, townships, fees, farms, annuities, reversions, rents, services, hundreds, view frankpledge, courts leet, sheriffs' turns, liberties, franchises, fairs, markets, jurisdictions, vineyards, fisheries, warrens, knights' fees and advowsons of priories, abbeys, churches, chantries, hospitals etc. and all hereditaments in the realm, Wales, the Marches and Scotland, of which his grandfather the earl, William his father, Isabel his grandmother, Anne his mother or Sir Thomas Bourgchier once held or enjoyed, to take the same into his hands as from Michaelmas, 7 Henry VII.

June 23. To the keeper of the change within the Tower of London for the time being. Order to pay John Greneacres 3d. a day for his life and the arrears since 12 March last; on which date by letters patent the king appointed him to the office of usher of the change within the said Tower, to hold the same by himself or sufficient deputy during his life with the above wages, which were received under King Edward III.
