it now is until the defendant's coming to England a plea between John
Bourghcher knight and William Hauney the king's clerk concerning
the presentation to the hospital of Maldon by name of the hospital
of St. Giles Maldon; as by letters patent of 23 September 47 Edward III
the late king gave to the said William for life the wardenship of the
hospital, being then void and in his gift, by virtue whereof the said
William obtained and now has possession thereof as he avers, but the
plaintiff avers that it is void and in his gift; and the king has taken
order to send the defendant with others to Brittany for business
affecting the king and realm, and would not that the king, to whom
the patronage belongs by inheritance, or the defendant should incur
loss for lack of defence in person. Proviso that they shall proceed
if the defendant sails not, or when he shall return. |

Certificate of John Clerc of Ewelle escheator in Hertfordshire,
reciting a writ to him addressed (text follows), tested at Westminster
1 February 4 Richard II, directing him in presence of Hugh de
Segrave knight to whom the king has granted the keeping thereof,
to assign dower of two thirds the manor of Hicchen, which
Edward de Kendale knight held of the late king in chief,
to Thomas Barre and Elizabeth his wife late wife of the said
Edward, the king having given the said Thomas licence to take her
to wife, that by William Clophulle, Henry Legat, Robert Walmesford,
John Everard, William Strange, John Coterell, Adam Pyrewelle,
