To the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer. Writ of supersedeas until the quinzaine of Easter next, upon petition of Ralph de Wolverton, John Morteyn and Alice his wife executrix of Thomas Haket, in respect of their demand against the petitioners to answer or account for 100 marks; as their complaint shews that lately the king appointed the said Ralph and Thomas collectors in the Isle of Wight of two tenths and fifteenths to him granted by the commons, commanding them thereof to levy and deliver 215 marks to the late abbot of Quarr (now deceased) and William de Ringebourne for wages of 100 men at arms appointed by advice of the council to abide for a set time in the isle for safe guard thereof, according to orders given by the council to the said abbot and William; that by virtue of that command they levied and delivered the same to the said abbot and William, and they paid it to Richard Northlande, whom the king retained with a hundred men at arms in his company for safe guard of the isle, that on behalf of the men of the isle the said abbot and William after appeared before the king and council for business concerning the defence thereof, and by advice of the council order was given them to return thither with all speed, and to direct the said collectors to deliver to the said Richard 100 marks reward, over and above the sum aforesaid, for shipment and other his foreign expenses and expenses of his said men upon the journey, going and returning, and that although by order of the council, received by word of mouth from the said abbot and William, the collectors paid that sum, as the king has learned by witness of the said William, being examined upon oath before the king and council, the treasurer and the barons are distraining them to answer for the said 100 marks as if it were yet unpaid. Memorandum of defeasance, upon condition that the said Richard shall for one whole year keep Elizabeth cousin and one of the heirs of Philip de Bryen knight, who is within age and in the king's wardship, a pure virgin, finding her meat and raiment such as her estate requires, and at the end of the year shall deliver her, if required, sole and unmarried to John Lovell, to whom the king has granted her marriage, or to his deputy having sufficient warrant.
Cancelled upon performance of the above conditions, witnessed in chancery by John Lovell knight.

To Henry de Percy earl of Northumberland, John de Neville of Raby, Henry son of Henry de Percy, Roger de Clifford, John de Roos, Richard Lescrope, Ralph baron of Greystok, William de Skipwyth, Roger de Fulthorp, William Burgh, John Ask, John Lokton, William de Risceby and John Dent, appointed by letters patent of 3 April last upon complaint of Alexander archbishop of York, William Skipwyth, Roger Fulthorp or William Burgh being one, to make inquisition by men of Yorkshire concerning the names of evildoers who, with William Hovyngham, John de Rypoun, William Howesone and John Toppe, repaired in armed power to the archbishop's palace at York and his manors of Bishopthorp and Cawode, while the archbishop was under special protection of the king, by force of arms broke his closes and houses, the gates, doors and windows of the said palace and manors, took and carried away his goods and chattels to the value of 1,000l. etc., contrary to the peace and to the said protection, and of the truth concerning those trespasses, and to hear and determine the same. Order to cause proclamation to be made that no merchant or other of that city or neighbourhood of whatsoever estate or condition shall under pain of forfeiture henceforward lade any merchandise or wares, or cause them to be laded in places called 'crykes' and divers little places by the sea coast where merchandise used not to be laded heretofore, and that whoever will repair to the king and council to give information concerning those who have so done or shall so do shall have a reward for his travail wherewith he shall be well content; as the king is informed that great number of merchants and other his subjects have laded goods in such places, and taken them over to foreign parts, and do lade and take them over, without payment of custom etc. thereupon due.

Memorandum of a mainprise made before the council 26 February 10 Richard II by Edmund duke of York and Thomas duke of Gloucestre for Henry bishop of Norwich, and of an undertaking by the bishop, that he should do or procure no hurt or harm to John Pagrave.
John atte Crouche, William Wykham and William Spenser to Hubert de Lacford and Hugh de Brampton, their heirs and assigns. Quitclaim of all the lands etc. in Someresham which the said John, William and William lately had by feoffment of John de Brampton and Isabel his wife, sealed with their seals and the seal of John de Brunne. To the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer. Writ of supersedeas until three weeks after Easter next in respect of their demand against Henry bishop of Worcester and the sheriff [of Worcestershire] to answer or account for the issues or farm since 21 October 5 Richard II of the lands of John de Dicheford deceased, tenant by knight service of the bishopric of Worcester lately void and in the late king's hand; as the late king gave the said bishop the wardship of those lands, which came to his hand by reason of the said John's death and of the nonage of William his son and heir, rendering 4l. 18s. a year at the exchequer; and although the said king took the said bishop's fealty and on 22 October 49 Edward III restored to him the temporalities of his bishopric, and on 21 October aforesaid the said William died, as it is found by inquisition, the treasurer and the barons are purposing to charge the bishop with the said farm or issues since that date, and are unlawfully troubling him and the sheriff, wherefore they have prayed for remedy; and the king is not yet fully advised whether the bishop or the sheriff ought to be so charged or no.

To the mayor and sheriffs of London. Order to cause proclamation to be made that an ordinance made in the parliament holden at Westminster in 35 Edward III be kept and duly executed, namely that at the petition of great number of dwellers in the city and suburbs of London, shewing that the air was poisoned by slaughter of great beasts therein, their blood flowing down the streets and their entrails being cast away there, whence arose an abominable stench, which caused sickness and other mischief to men dwelling in the city and suburbs and to those flocking thither, and worse peril was feared if a remedy were not speedily applied, with assent of the council order was made that all oxen, sheep, swine and other great beasts slaughtered for sustenance of the city and suburbs should be taken to Stretford on the one side and Knyghtbrigge on the other, and should there be slaughtered and no nearer, that their entrails should be scoured and so carried to the city with the flesh for sale, and that any butcher doing aught to the contrary should suffer forfeiture of flesh and beasts slaughtered nearer the city, and imprisonment for one year, and order at their peril to cause the same to be observed, chastising and punishing all butchers who do aught to the contrary; as in the parliament holden at Westminster in 3 Richard II order was made that the said ordinance be kept and executed.

Order not to trouble Robert de Grenacres knight, indicted for rape of Margery daughter of Richard de Ravenesholme at Twiston on Sunday before St. John Baptist 7 Richard II, and for divers alleged trespasses against the peace, and writ of supersedeas in respect of process against him whatsoever at suit of the king or at the king's command, so long as he shall be at sea on the king's service; as at the prayer of the duke of Gloucestre the king has pardoned him, so that he stand to right in the king's court if any will bring a cause against him, and he has found in chancery security for his good behaviour toward the king and people, and is about to sail on the service aforesaid.

Order to cause proclamation to be made that no merchant or other of Cornwall shall under pain of forfeiture take merchandise out of the realm, or bring it to the realm and there unlade it without payment of the custom, subsidies etc. thereupon due, and that whosoever will repair to the king and council to give information concerning merchants and others who have so done shall have for his travail a third part of all that may be recovered by way of forfeiture; as the king is informed that great number of merchants and other his subjects have many times laded merchandise in divers ports and other places in Cornwall called 'crykes,' and taken it to foreign parts, and have brought merchandise and there unladed it without payment of the same.

Writ of supersedeas omnino in respect of their demand against William de Rilleston and Alan de Katerall or one of them, appointed by letters patent to make inquisition by men of Yorkshire what evildoers and breakers of the peace slew Adam del Brodes of Farneley at Quarfedale, how and at whose procurement the manslaughter was committed, who knowingly harboured them, who burned the said Adam's houses, and concerning all the circumstances, that they shall deliver up or render account of the estreats of their session by virtue of the said letters, which were sent to the exchequer among the estreats of chancery; as they received them not, nor executed them, meddling in nought therein contained, as the king has learned by oath of the said Alan in chancery and by other credible witness.

Writ of supersedeas, by mainprise of William de Soulby, John de Scarburgh of Yorkshire, John Brune of York and John del Sithire of York, in respect of a writ de judicio returnable one month after Easter, directing him to take Robert de Skipwyth citizen and skinner of York, to extend his lands, appraise his goods and after one quarter of a year to deliver them to Thomas Hubert and Peter de Heselyngton citizens and skinners of York, and order to set the said Robert free if taken; as his complaint shews that before John Warde late mayor of London and Helmyng Leget clerk deputed to take recognisances of debt in that city he lately made a recognisance for 100l. to the said Thomas and Peter, that they by writing indented after made a defeasance thereof, upon condition that he should pay 5 marks 6s. 8d. at Christmas, 5 marks 6s. 8d. at Midsummer, and so year by year until 45l. 6s. 8d. should be paid, and that although he has paid that sum, and they have made him a release of all actions real and personal and an acquittance of the said sum, produced in chancery, by colour of the recognisance they are unlawfully suing execution of 100l.; and at his prayer the king has commanded the justices of the Bench to view one part of the indenture of defeasance, the acquittance and release, to summon the parties before them, to hear arguments on either side, and to deal as ought to be done according to law etc.

Writ of supersedeas, by mainprise of James Ormesby, Hildebrand Wotton, Robert Weston and John Bromley, in favour of John Roggerson, John atte Kirke and Ralph Bescolby of the diocese of Lincoln, whom at the request of the bishop of Lincoln, signifying that by his authority they were excommunicated for contumacy and would not be justified by censure of the church, the king lately ordered the sheriff to justify by their bodies until they should content holy church for their contempt and wrong; as they have appealed from that sentence to the court of Canterbury, as appears by a notarial instrument produced in chancery.

Order to cause proclamation to be made, that all lieges and dwellers in the realm of whatsoever estate or condition who have since the king's coronation given or paid aught to his officers or others to have or procure assignments or payments by tallies levied in the receipt of the exchequer shall hasten to the great council in order to sue and declare in particular how much they so paid or gave, to whom and how. It is the king's will that all willing for him or for themselves to sue any persons of whatsoever estate or condition who have received any money or other profit for making or procuring such assignments shall have a third of all that shall be recovered.
