To the treasurer and the barons of the exchequer. Order to search the rolls and memoranda of the exchequer and, if assured that the manor of Grenche is a member of Hastynges one of the Cinque Ports, and used to be assessed for performance of the services and maintenance of the navy of those ports, to stay their demand upon Margaret who was wife of John Philippot knight, now tenant thereof, for payment of her share with the foreigners of the county without the liberty of the said ports towards the moiety of a tenth or fifteenth last granted to the king by the commons for her goods and chattels upon the said manor, discharging her, the collectors in Kent, and others whatsoever; as in consideration that the said navy might not without great cost be maintained, lest the same should thereafter be lacking or perish, King Edward I by letters patent, confirmed by the king, granted that all they of the said ports, and others avowing themselves of the liberty thereof and willing to enjoy the same, should contribute every man according to his means to perform the king's service concerning his ships at command of the king; and for that disputes arose concerning the general words contribute every man according to his means, that the barons of the said ports might more conveniently perform their service, by counsel of the prelates, earls and barons and of the commons in the parliament holden in 1 Edward III, the late king by letters patent, likewise confirmed by the king, granted that all they of the said ports and others aforesaid should contribute of all their goods and chattels without and within the said liberty, being compelled so to do, if need be, by the mayors and jurats of the ports and the constable of Dovorre castle, and that goods of the barons and others so assessed should not be assessed with goods of foreigners towards tallages or other charges whatsoever; and after in the parliament holden in 15 Edward III it seemed good to the late king and council, and was by the prelates, earls, barons and commons debated and agreed, that the barons and others of the said liberty ought to be quit and discharged of tallages and charges whatsoever granted by the commons upon their goods and chattels in respect of goods within the liberty and without whereof they were bound to contribute, and did contribute as aforesaid.

To the sheriff of Essex. Writ of supersedeas omnino, and order to set free Thomas Spaygne citizen and fishmonger of London, if taken; as on 20 February 9 Richard II, before Nicholas Brembre mayor of the staple of Westminster deputed to receive recognisances of debts therein, he made a recognisance for 22l. 13s. 4d. to Roger Wilforde citizen and fishmonger, payable at the feast of the Conception then next, and paid not the same it is said, wherefore the king by writ ordered the sheriff to take and imprison him, if a layman, until he should content the said Roger, to cause his lands and chattels to be extended and appraised, and seize them into the king's hand to deliver to the said Roger until so contented, certifying in chancery at a day now past how he executed that writ; and the sheriff returned that the said Thomas was not found in his bailiwick after receipt of that writ, but has there divers lands and chattels, which he extended, appraised and took into the king's hand; and by another writ the king ordered him to deliver them to the said Roger, if he would receive them by the said extent and appraisement, and to take the body of the said Thomas if a layman etc., certifying (as before) at a day yet to come; but the said Roger is contented in chancery of that debt and of 40s. to him adjudged by the court for his damages and costs.

Writ of supersedeas, upon petition of Thomas Bonham, executor of Nicholas Bonham, in respect of a distress made against him upon the lands of the said Nicholas, and order to discharge the said Thomas, the other executors and the tenants of the said lands, making due process against others named in the same commission for delivery of the estreats of fines, issues, amercements and chattels forfeited before the justices in their sessions; as the petitioner has shewn the king that by his commission, dated 8 May 5 Richard II, the said Nicholas was appointed one of the justices of the peace, justice for keeping the statutes of Winchester, Norhampton and Westminster and of oyer and terminer in Wiltesir, and that although he held no session at any time by virtue of that commission nor ever meddled therein, and no estreats of the justices' rolls came to his hands, the treasurer and the barons are unlawfully distraining the petitioner to deliver in the exchequer all such estreats; and the king has particular information by credible persons that he held no session etc. (as aforesaid).

Somerset, made at Frome Braunche on Thursday in Easter week 10 Richard II by Richard Mucheldevere escheator by virtue of the king's writ (text follows) tested at Westminster 5 March 10 Richard II; namely the high chamber over the gate with the chapel within the court of Faleys, a bovary by 'Longecroft' with free ingress and egress to the same, the advowsons of the chapels of St. Mary and St. Katherine in the town of Frome to present every third turn, 52 acres of arable land in a close called 'Cotelesassh' on the north side, 30 acres of land in a close called 'Middefelde,' 60 acres of land in a close by that called 'Houperesheye,' 50 acres of land in a close called 'Longcroft,' a third part of the pasture, close and wood called Bolewe, 3 acres of meadow in the 'Ynhouk' on the east side, 2½ acres of meadow called Clenek, 1 acre called 'Batelmede,' 14 acres 1 rood of meadow in the south field between Frome and Nony, 10 acres of wood called Curchelle, 100 acres in 'Selewode,' a third part of a pasture called Stertes and 'Mourhegge,' a third part of a water mill called the 'Nywmulle,' a third part of the issues and profits of the market and fair of Frome, a third part of 'Tristesmulle,' a third part of the hundred and court of the town of Frome and of the halemote within the manor with all profits and liberties, to be taken by a bailiff deputed by the said Joan and the owner of the two thirds, and the steward to hold those courts shall during her life be appointed likewise, provided the same be out of the king's hands; also all lands etc. in tenure of William Mountagu, Thomas Bruton, Roger de Frome, William Stoudeleye, Roger de Frome, the tenants of Wodelond, Hugh Taillour, Henry Donkerton, Richard Chaumburleyn, Roger Walton, Eolenta Giffard, John Gable, John Ropere, Walter Donkerton, John Jordan, John Wade, John Perys, John Waite, John Seward, Roger de Frome and William Stoudeleye in Frome and Wodelond, with their accustomed rents and services and the reversions of their lands, also 10d. larding rent due from John Irissh, 10d. from Richard Chamburleyn and 10d. from Matthew Gouer payable at Martinmas, 2 bushels of oats due from Richard Chamburleyn and 2 bushels from Thomas Pynnok at the Purification, with all other services of those tenants.
Assignment of dower of the said Philip's lands at Shokerwyk and Bathneston, made at Shokerwyk and Bathneston on Wednesday in Easter week that year, namely a grange on the north side of Shokerwyk hall, a bovary on the east side of the hall and a third part of the barton as there bounded, a garden called 'Nethergardyn' containing 2 acres of land, closes called Hawele containing 8 acres, 'Middehawe' 10 acres, and 'Brechelond' 5 acres, 13 acres of land in Hamondesleye in the east field of Shokerwyk, 5 acres in the 'Inhouke,' 2 acres in the 'Pitlond,' 1 acre 1 rood in 'Tounesende,' all in the same field, 10 acres in 'Blakeforlang' in the west field and 3 acres called 'Thurleshawe' in that field, 3½ acres of meadow in the 'Brodemede,' and a wood called 'Julianeswode' containing 5 acres, the rents and services of the tenants following within the manor of Shokerwyk, namely 9s. 6d. due from Nicholas Clyve, 12s. 2d. from Walter Bytheclyve, and 3s. 4¾d. from John Edmond as for a third part of his holding, with a cock and three hens yearly due from Nicholas Clyve, a cock and three hens from Walter Bytheclyve, and all other services from them due, also the rents and services of the following tenants in Bathneston, namely 19s. 8d. due from John Bruton, 20s. 1d. from Walter Elsaunt, 8s. 1d. from Robert Couke and 14s. 8d. from John Wilton, and all services from them due.

To the keepers of the passage in the port of Orewelle. Order to cause proclamation to be there made, that no man of whatsoever estate or condition shall under pain of forfeiture lade wool, wine or other merchandise in ships or vessels to be taken out of that port to foreign parts, or take the same over, without special licence of the king; as the king has information that great number of merchants of the realm and strangers have in that port laded and do lade the same to be taken over to the king's enemies and elsewhere for their relief.
