Declaration of William de Bryene knight that, whereas certain untrue matters to his dishonour are declared in a letter patent of Guy de Briene knight produced in chancery, (text follows; see above, p. 604,) the reenfeoffments made by Sir Robert Fitz Payn, Richard Mucheldevere, Sir William Plussh, Martin de Ferrers, John de Ferrers of Churcheton, William Tray parson of Slapton and John Prestecote of the manors of Rammesham, Wroxhale, Childefrome, Maperton, Wyrdesforde Belet, Kyngesdoun, Somerton Erle, Somerton Randolf, Slapton, Dertemuth, Clifton and Herdenasse and the reversion of the manor of Torrebriene cos. Dorset, Somerset and Devon were made by their good will without threat or duress of him or any on his part, granting the same to Sir Guy de Briene his father for life, with remainder to the said William and the heirs male of his body, remainder to Sir Philip de Briene his brother and to the issue male of his body, remainder to the said William's right heirs, that the fines levied of the premises between the said Sir Guy, John Passour clerk and John Renawey containing the like entail were likewise recorded and engrossed with their good will by appointment of his said father without fraud, duress or covin of the said William etc., and that he is ready to prove it in the court of chivalry and all other courts, humbly desiring to be held excused of such untruth and dishonour, considering that at the date of those fines his father appointed the last remainder to the said William's right heirs in fee because he was then his eldest son, and because Sir Guy was aware that by divers entails his own right heirs, the daughters of Sir Guy brother of Sir William, would inherit the fee simple of great number of other manors and lands of his and of Sir Guy the son, Sir Philip and Sir William to the yearly value of 700 marks or more, and by their mother's side the heritage of Buris to the yearly value of 700 marks or more, of which 1,400 marks and of other the manors aforesaid Sir William's female issue would inherit nought so long as those daughters his nieces live, or other the right heirs of Sir Guy the father, unless in default of heirs male to bear his arms and name he had appointed the remainder in fee of a portion of such manors to the right heirs of Sir William for support of his female issue; and protest that this declaration of his own honour is to preserve the honour and estate of his father and himself, and his own right in the said manors, considering that the errors above mentioned were due to ignorance, his father's great age, evil counsel and untrue information of others, avowing his readiness as an obedient son to perform his father's commands, saving his own honour and estate. Dated 10 November 12 Richard II. French.
