Norreys the king's esquire 20 marks a year for life and the arrears
since 22 April last, on which date for good service the king granted
him for life 20 marks a year of the issues of the city of London. |

To the same. Order, upon petition of Henry Bray, by mainprise
of William Chaumberleyn of London 'taillour,' Thomas Smyth of
Newenton, Nicholas Kynderwere and Richard Strode of Surrey to
set him free; as lately the king ordered the sheriffs to certify in chancery
the cause wherefore he was by them taken and imprisoned in Neugate
gaol, and they signified that before the coming of that writ the said
Henry was taken at Newenton co. Surrey by the king's constables
there for that Andrew Eccleshale, who is in the sheriff's custody
being appealed for larceny by John Dycoun a prover likewise in their
custody, made an accusation against him that he, knowing the said
Andrew to be a common thief and to have robbed the people of many
horses and divers other goods, did harbour the said Andrew and great
number of other thieves, and bought of him great number of horses
and divers other goods, knowing the same to be stolen, and that he is
a common and notorious receiver of thieves and stolen horses, that
the said Henry being taken escaped from the custody of the constables
and fled to the parish church of Newenton, and was by the said constables a second time taken in that town without the church, and
by them delivered to the sheriffs' custody; and his petition shews that
he is ready to answer touching the premises, and the said William and
the others have mainperned in chancery body for body and under a
pain of 100 marks to have him before the justices of gaol delivery
at the next delivery of the said gaol. |

To the king's receiver of Walyngforde castle for the time being.
Order to pay to the marquess of Dorset 50l. a year during his life,
and the arrears since 20 November last, on which date the king granted
him for life the office of constable of that castle with the stewardship
of the honours of Walyngforde and St. Walery and of the four and a
half hundreds of Chilterne from the death of John Golafre knight
the last constable there, taking for his wages and fees 40l. a year by the
hands of the receiver, and 10l. more for payment to his lieutenant
for ruling the said offices in his absence, even as the said John had. |

To the collectors of customs and subsidies in the port of London.
Order to suffer a little fardel marked with the mark of the merchants
of the Alberti dwelling in England, and the napery therein, which
was bought in foreign parts by those merchants' fellows for the use
of the king's clerk William Waltham keeper of the hanaper of
chancery and brought to London, to be by the said William and his
servants taken whither he will to his use without payment of custom
or subsidy, any commands of the king to the contrary notwithstanding. |

of Bristol instead of John Stodelee otherwise called John Goos, who

To the sheriffs of London. Order to set free Henry Verney of Staffordshire esquire; as on 20 August last before William Brampton
mayor of the staple of Westminster deputed to receive recognisances
of debts therein the said Henry. John Wrangull of Kirketon in Lyndeseye and William Glasyere citizen and skinner of London made a
joint and several recognisance to John Longeley and John Astenby
citizens and drapers of London for 30l., which they ought to have
paid on the feast of Allhallows then next and have not yet paid it is
said; and the king ordered the sheriffs to take and imprison the bodies
of the said Henry, John Wrangull and William, if laymen, until they
should content John Longeley and John Astenby of the debt, causing
their lands and chattels to be extended and appraised, and to be
seized into the king's hand for delivery to John Longeley and John
Astenby until so contented, and certifying in chancery at a day past
how they should execute that order; and the sheriffs returned (among
other things) that they took the said Henry and committed him to
Neugate prison, and that the said John Wrangull and William were
not found in their bailiwick; but John Longeley and John Astenby,
appearing in person in chancery, have acknowledged that they were
by the said Henry contented of the aforesaid sum. |

To the sheriff of Warrewyk for the time being. Order to pay to
John Kyngestone the king's liege, yeoman of his nephew Thomas
duke of Surrey, 6d. a day which the king has granted him of the issues
and profits of Warwickshire for life, or until the king shall take other
order for his estate, in consideration that the said John was lately
maimed in the king's service at Burford upon the 'Wolde.' |

and subsidies in that port, and to John Drax serjeant at arms lately
appointed to arrest divers ships and barges and other vessels of a
certain burden for passage of the duke of Surrey and his men to Ireland,
and to the serjeant's representative in the said port. Order, upon
petition of John Baunebury, John Emmot and Thomas Knappe of
Bristol merchants, shewing that in that port John Baunebury freighted
a crayer of his called 'la Welfare' of Bristol, John Emmot a ship of
his called 'la Gracedieu' of Bristol, and the said Thomas a ship of his
called 'la Marie' of Bristol with divers goods and merchandise to
take to foreign parts, but that John Drax has there arrested the said
crayer and ships, after payment of customs, subsidies, etc. due upon
such goods etc. to dearrest the same, if freighted and arrested as
aforesaid, suffering the masters and seamen thereof and other the
petitioners' men and servants to pass to foreign parts with crayer,
ships and goods, the said arrest and any former commands to the
contrary notwithstanding. |

to suffer William Langbrooke the king's clerk without payment of
custom or subsidy to carry whither he will six pipes of wine, bought
and purveyed within the duchy of Aquitaine for consumption of his
household in England, as he has made oath in chancery, and brought
to the port of London in a certain ship, any command of the king
to the contrary notwithstanding. |

To Stephen de Thorp knight, Peter Notle, Ralph de Lelley, Thomas
Beynell of Cave, Thomas Seintquyntyn, Robert Hunter of Scarburgh,
John Cooke of Scarburgh and John de Tutbury, appointed with John
de Ake of Beverley collectors in the Estrithing in Yorkshire of a
fifteenth and the moiety of a fifteenth, and of a tenth and the moiety
of a tenth granted to the king by the lords and commons in the last
parliament begun at Westminster on Monday after the Exaltation
of Holy Cross last, adjourned to Shrewsbury and there ended. Order
to busy themselves with the levy and collection thereof according
to their commission without awaiting the presence of John de Ake,
and to answer for the same at the exchequer his absence notwithstanding; as because by charters of former kings, confirmed by the
king, all burgesses and inhabitants of Beverley have such exemptions
and privileges, as they aver, that they ought not against their will
to be appointed collectors of tenths and fifteenths, and for other
particular causes shewn before the king, he has removed and discharged John de Ake, who is a burgess and inhabitant of that town. |

To the mayor and bailiffs of Dertemuth, the collectors of customs
and subsidies in that port and the king's searcher there. Order,
upon petition of Hugh Short citizen and merchant of London, if a
barge called 'la Seint Mariebote,' John Cadewe master, is arrested
by John Drax one of the king's serjeants at arms, and for that reason
is unladed and kept under arrest, to view the letters of cocket and,
if thereby assured that in the port of London the petitioner paid
custom and subsidy upon the merchandise therein laded, to dearrest the
said barge, suffering him, his men and servants to lade the same again,
and without a second payment to pass therewith to Spain, and discharging John Cadewe and his mainpernors whatsoever, any commands
of the king to the contrary notwithstanding; as the said Hugh has
shewn the king that, after paying customs and subsidies thereupon,
he laded that barge in the port of London with divers merchandise
of his to be taken to Spain, but that by colour of the king's commission to John Drax to arrest divers ships, barges etc. of a certain
burden for the passage of Thomas duke of Surrey and his men sailing
on the king's service to Ireland, the barge was on the voyage arrested
by him in the port of Dertemuth and, against the petitioner's will
and the will of his men and servants and of the master and seamen,
is unladed. Proviso that the merchandise has not been and shall
not be there exposed for sale. |

order to suffer no writs of scire facias nor any other execution to issue
until order shall be taken for saving the king harmless, or until further
order, upon a record and process concerning causes in the last parliament for Thomas le Despenser earl of Gloucestre touching certain
petitions concerning errors, in that parliament annulled, which concern the lands of Hugh le Despenser the father and Hugh le Despenser
the son; as lately the king caused that record and process to be delivered to the chief justice for execution, but for particular causes specially
affecting the king and the safety of his estate his will is that the same
be not executed, but wait until by the king and council order shall be

Order, upon petition of Nicholas Mountacuke of London 'vyneter'
and Richard Warner, if a ship called 'le Vyncent' of London, William
Welles master, laded with divers merchandise is by John Drax one of
the king's serjeants at arms arrested and kept under arrest by virtue
of the king's commission to him to arrest divers ships, barges etc. of
a certain burden for the passage of the duke of Surrey and his men
sailing on the king's service to Ireland, to view the letters of cocket
and, if thereby assured that in the port of London the petitioners
paid custom and subsidy upon that merchandise, to dearrest the ship,
suffering the master and seamen and other the men and servants of
the petitioners to pass with ship and merchandise to Spain, any former
command to the contrary notwithstanding; as the said petition
shews that, after payment of customs and subsidies thereupon, the
said Nicholas and Richard laded the said ship in the port of London
with divers merchandise to be taken to Spain, and that on the voyage
it was by John Drax arrested in the port of Dertemuth, thence to be
taken under arrest within a set time to a place by the said John
appointed. |

in that port, after payment of customs and subsidies thereupon, to
take over to Holand ten thousand fells of conies, any proclamations
or commands to the contrary notwithstanding; as the king has given
him licence so to do. (See Ancient Petitions 14964.) |

To the mayor and bailiffs of Plymmuth. Order, upon petition of
Richard Crouland and John Garlyng, if a ship called 'la Trinite'
of Plymmouth, the said John master, was laded with merchandise
before it was arrested by John Drax one of the king's serjeants at
arms by virtue of a commission to arrest divers ships etc. for the
passage of the duke of Surrey etc. to Ireland, and is by him so arrested
and kept under arrest, to view the letters of cocket and, if thereby
assured that in that port the petitioners paid the custom and subsidy due upon the said merchandise, to dearrest and deliver the ship
to them, to be by them and their deputies taken to Spain, the commission to John Drax notwithstanding; as the said petition shews
that the said Richard and John Gerlyns laded the ship in that port
with divers merchandise to be taken to Spain, first paying the
customs etc., and that it was arrested as aforesaid, to be taken
under arrest before a set time to a place by the said serjeant
appointed; and the king's will is that ships laded with merchandise
whereupon customs are paid be dearrested. |

To John Brace escheator in Worcestershire. Order to take the
fealty of Roger Mortymer of Tedisternewafre, and to give him livery
of the manors of Marteleye and Cuyrewyard, and the issues thereof
taken; as it is found by inquisition, taken by the escheator, that
by fine levied in the king's court Elizabeth who was wife of John
de Herle knight at her death held the same as jointly enfeoffed with
her said husband by grant of Thomas Belue and Hugh Maume to them
and the heirs male of their bodies, with remainder to the said Roger
and to Maud his wife now deceased, and to the heirs of their bodies,
that the manor of Marteleye is held in chief by knight service, the
manor of Cuyrewyard of another than the king, and that the said
John and Elizabeth are dead without issue male; and for a fine paid
by John de Herle and Elizabeth the king pardoned the trespasses committed in the premises, as appears by his letters patent produced in
chancery, and for half a mark paid in the hanaper he has respited
the said Roger's homage until the feast of Allhallows next. |

arms appointed to arrest ships, barges etc. of a certain burden for
the passage of the duke of Surrey and his men to Ireland, and the said
serjeant's representative there. Order with assent of the council,
upon petition of John Perowe master of a balinger called 'la Trinite'
of Bristol, if before arrest that balinger was freighted in the said
port with goods and merchandise of divers merchants to be taken
to foreign parts, and is by the said serjeant arrested and detained,
after payment of customs, subsidies etc. due upon such merchandise
to dearrest the same, suffering the master and seamen and other
the men and servants of the master and merchants to pass therewith
to foreign parts, such arrest or any former commands of the king to
the contrary notwithstanding; as the said petition shews that the
balinger was freighted etc. as aforesaid, and the king's will is that
ships so freighted be dearrested. |

take the fealty of John Staunton, in presence of the said John, of
William Craweshawe and the next friends of Margaret and Thomasia
daughters of Ralph Meynell knight, who are within age, and of William
Bagot knight and Thomas Sekyndoun clerk to whom the king has
committed the ward of a parcel thereof until the lawful age of
the heirs, or of their attorneys, to make a partition into four
equal parts of the lands which the said Ralph held at his death,
and of such as were held by Joan who was wife of Richard Meynell
the grandfather in dower or otherwise for life of their heritage, taken
into the king's hand by death of the said Ralph and Joan and by
reason of the nonage of the heirs, and to give the said John and Joan
his wife, one of the daughters and heirs of the said Ralph, and William
Craweshawe and Elizabeth his wife, another daughter and heir,
seisin of the purparties of the said Joan and Elizabeth, keeping in
the king's hand the purparties of the said Margaret and Thomasia
until further order; as the said Joan wife of John and Elizabeth have
proved their age before Francis de Merynge escheator in Derbyshire,
and the king has taken the fealty of William Craweshawe. Proviso
that each of the heirs and parceners shall have a share of the lands
held in chief, and shall be a tenant of the king. |
