Memorandum that on 6 February 22 Richard II a petition indented under the seals of Roger archbishop of Canterbury and other prelates and bishops his brethren, the mayor and aldermen of London and divers other persons of the realm concerning their submission to the king was by the chancellor delivered to the said archbishop by virtue of a letter of the king's signet which is on the chancery file for this year, and a copy of the petition remains closed up in a 'canevace' bag in the keeping of Thomas Stanley keeper of the chancery rolls, together with certain rolls and schedules containing the names of persons of Surrey, Sussex, Bukinghamshire, Wiltesir, Essex, the county of Suthampton, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Bedfordshire and Kent.
Memorandum of a mainprise under a pain of 40l., made in chancery 8 February this year by Thomas Derham, John Maunynge, Thomas Grace of Norffolk and Thomas Derham of London 'taillour' for Robert Wesenham, John Gotir, John Bilneye, Henry atte Fen, John Walmere, Robert Walmere and John Mody, that they shall do or procure no hurt or harm to Simon Helgeye clerk.

Writ of supersedeas omnino in respect of any process against Richard Hembrugge serjeant at arms, appointed with others to make inquisition in Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire and Devon concerning all wares and merchandise laded or unladed upon the coast of Wales and elsewhere along the river Severn without payment of custom and subsidy, but order to proceed against others who did meddle therein; as that commission was not delivered to the said Richard, as he has made oath in chancery. Memorandum that on 8 May 22 Richard II at Kerdyf before the bishop of Exeter the chancellor Sir Ralph de Radclyf and Sir Robert de Leghe knights were sworn upon the gospels to be true and loyal to the king and his heirs the kings of England, namely in his absence out of the realm in Ireland, and if they may know of any man moving or saying aught which may be to the scandal, dishonour, prejudice or hurt of the king or realm, or of any rising of the people against him, to resist it to the utmost of their power, and if they may not so do, to bring it to his knowledge with all the speed they may, and to quit the realm rather than assent to aught which may be to the scandal etc. of the king or crown. Memorandum of a mainprise under a pain of 40l., made in chancery 18 June this year by Richard Beverlee and Robert Skyryve of Yorkshire for William Louell clerk, that he shall make no attempt or suit in the court of Rome, and cause none to be made, which may tend to prejudice of the king or crown, or to impair the laws, statutes or ordinances of the realm, nor against the dean and chapter of the cathedral church of St. Peter York, and shall send no man thither for the purpose.

To Walter Clopton and his fellows, justices appointed to hold pleas before the king. Order by writ of nisi prius to cause an inquisition whereupon Richard Praty, John Holyoke, William son of Isabel Notte and John 'Above the Wautre' have put themselves, being indicted for felony, to be taken before the said justices or one of them, before one of the justices of the Common Bench or the justices of assize in Worcestershire. To William Bolle escheator in Lincolnshire. Order to remove the king's hand and meddle no further with the manor of Knayth and the members thereof, which extend into Upton, Kesorby, Gaytburton and Gaynesburgh, delivering to Elizabeth late the wife of Philip Darcy knight any issues thereof taken; as the king has learned by inquisition, taken by the escheator, that the said Philip at his death held the same with the advowsons, knights' fees, fisheries, wards, reliefs, escheats, warrens and appurtenances as jointly enfeoffed with her by gift of Robert Wyclyfe clerk and others to them and them heirs of the said Philip, and that the manor is held of others than the king. To the receiver for the time being of lands and lordships within the honour of Pontfreict which were of John late duke of Aquitaine and Lancastre. Order so long as the same shall be in the king's hand to pay to John Albertyn 5 marks a year and the arrears since 20 March last, on which date the king confirmed letters patent whereby for good and acceptable service the duke granted him for life 5 marks a year of the issues of the said lands and lordships. To the receiver for the time being of the issues of lands and lordships within the duchy of Lancastre which were of John late duke of Aquitaine and Lancastre. Order so long as the same shall be in the king's hand to pay to Thomas Flemmynge knight 20 marks a year granted to him for life by letters patent of the said duke, which the king has confirmed for that he has retained the said knight with him. (fn. 3)
July 9.

To the sheriff of Hereforde. Order under pain of forfeiture, for particular causes laid before the king and council, to take such order that Godriche Castell, which is in the king's hand by reason of the nonage of the heir of Richard Talbot knight a minor in ward of the king, be safe kept until further order to the use of the king and of none other. Order to the sheriff of Suthampton for election of a coroner instead of Reymund Iuot, who is insufficiently qualified. (fn. 3)

To the escheator in Middlesex. Order in presence of the next friends of Miles son and heir of Brian Wyndesore, a minor in ward of the king, to assign dower to Alice who was wife of the said Brian, of whom the king has taken an oath etc. (fn. 4)

To Thomas Bathe escheator in Somerset. Order to give Thomas son and heir of Peter de Bratton seisin of his father's lands; as he has proved his age before the escheator, and the king has taken his fealty, and for 1 mark paid in the hanaper has respited his homage until Easter next. (fn. 4)
To John Copeleston escheator in Devon. Like order; as the said heir has proved his age before Thomas Bathe. (fn. 4)
July 5.
Westminster.
To Walter Clopton and his fellows, justices appointed to hold pleas before the king. Order by writ of nisi prius to cause an inquisition which is to be taken between the king and John Arnalde, whether the bailiffs and commonalty of Gippewich entered two water mills and a piece of land in the town of Gippewich by the bridge called 'Stokebregge' claiming the same to them and their successors in right of the commonalty, or the said John was thereof seised by gift of the bailiffs and commonalty, confirmed by the king, and continued his possession thereof, without that that the premises were entered and claimed as aforesaid, or that the bailiffs and commonalty took any profit thereof after their said gift save only by sufferance and will of the said John, to be taken before the justices of assize in Suffolk. To the sheriff of Cornwall. Order to make restitution and give John Tresilyan, son and heir of Robert Tresilyan knight, livery of the manors of Polhorman and Penhirgarde, and of three messuages with appurtenances in Bodmyn; as by advice of the justices, serjeants at law and others of the council learned in the law it was determined in chancery that by virtue and authority of a judgment and statute made and rendered in the last parliament, begun at Westminster on Monday after the Exaltation of Holy Cross 21 Richard II and adjourned to the quinzaine of St. Hilary following at Shrewsbury, the said John should have restitution against John Haweley of Dertemuth of the said manors and messuages, whereof his said father was seised at the time of a judgment against him rendered in another parliament holden at Westminster on the morrow of the Purification 11 Richard II, and which by colour thereof were seized into the king's hands. July 12.
St. Albans.
To Peter Courtenay knight constable of Wyndesore castle, or to his lieutenant. Strict order at his peril to distrain all those who ought and are used to do the service of keeping certain wards of the castle in time of war and when peril shall threaten by attacks of enemies to perform that service; as divers lieges hold lands and knight's fees in various parts of the realm by the service aforesaid.
