Grant, at his recent petition, containing that the fruits etc. of his episcopal mensa, on account of wars and other calamities which have long afflicted and still afflict those parts, have been so much diminished or rather usurped and dilapidated that he can get nothing therefrom for his maintenance and for the support of his burdens, and that he has no place belonging to the said mensa where he can go and stay (quo declinare possis et valeas), that he, who is of a race of great nobles, may be presented to any benefice with or without cure, and hold it in commendam as long as he is bishop of the said see, and resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. To William, abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Bury St. Edmunds, immediately subject etc. Restriction, at the petition of the said abbot, who is Henry, king of England's proctor in the Roman court (setting forth the dangers of Clement VI's statute allowing religious to go to Rome, without licence of their superiors, in order to gain the indulgence of the year of Jubilee), of the said statute, as far as regards monks and novices of the Benedictine order in England and Wales, so that they may not leave their monasteries for the said purpose without having obtained the said licence; with grant and indult hereby to the above abbot to appoint, in any churches and monasteries of England and Wales, secular or regular priests who may hear the confessions of abbots, priors, monks, novices, servants (familiarium), farmers and tenants, being penitent, and grant them the said indulgence, once only, in the said year. In that year those of them who can shall say thirty masses, and on the same thirty days the penitential psalms with the wonted litanies and prayers; those who are not priests, thirty times the whole office of the dead, namely nine lessons and lauds, after the manner of the Benedictine order, and thirty times the penitential psalms with the said litanies and prayers, and in like manner those novices who are able to do so; the said servants, farmers and tenants shall say thirty times the Pater Noster and Ave Maria, and do other works of piety as prescribed by the said confessors. All the said religious shall daily during the said thirty days visit, with some devout prayers, an altar within the cloister of their monastery. Each of the said abbots or priors shall pay, for themselves and each of their monks and novices, as part of what they would have spent in going, remaining and returning for the said indulgence, at least one gold noble of English money, or the true value thereof, for the fabric and repair of [the churches etc. of] Rome, the same to be assigned to persons appointed for the purpose by the above abbot; if not, the present grant shall be null and void.
