  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian: ’Nicolò V. 1453. Anno 7. Lib. 1.’ There is no contemporary flyleaf. On the bottom edge of the volume is, as usual, the contemporary description, hardly legible: ‘Primus de provisionibus, de prebendis, de prebendis et dignitatibus vacantibus, [de] tabellionatus [officio] et de plenaria anno viio domini nostri domini Nicolai pape quinti.’ There are ff. 1–305 of text.
  • 2. On f. 33, under date St. Peter's, Rome, 1453, 5 Non. Oct. (3 Oct.) anno 7 is a provision to Richard, archdeacon of Auge (de Augo) in the church of Rouen, of the see of Coutances, void by the translation made by the pope this day of bishop John thence to Pavia. Amongst the concurrent letters the usual royal letter is addressed to Charles, king of France.
  • 3. Eubel, Hierarchia, II, p. 123, has under the above date ‘ob. Joa. Cronocht, Georgius de Schorisides (Shoreswood), cancell. Dunkelden.,’ closely following ‘Obl. 72, 60,’ to which he refers.
  • 4. Volumus autem quod idem antistes qui tibi prefatum manus impendet, postquam illud tibi impenderit, a te nostro et ecclesie Romane nomine fidelitatis debite solitum recipiat iuramentum, iuxta formam quam sub bulla nostra mittimus interclusam: forman autem iuramenti quod te prestare contigerit nobis de verbo ad verbum per tuas patentes litteras tuo sigillo signatas per proprium nuncium quantocius destinare procures.

  • 6. Traces of this heading have survived the binder's knife at the top of f. 206.
  • 7. The incipit of each of the following letters ‘de tabellionatus officio’ is the same, viz. ‘Ne contractuum,’ and each occupies about half a page.
  • 8. On f. 243, under date 1453, 6 Kal. Nov., anno 7, the above office is conferred on John Beck, priest, of the diocese of Coutances or Constance (Constancien.).

  • 10. Perhaps an error for ‘xvi.’ the usual fee for two persons, unless the indult was wider in scope than the brief form of registration indicates. Cf.below, f. 293d.
  • 11. On f. 301 under date 1453[–4], Non. Jan. anno 3 (rectius 7) is an indult to have a portable altar (Sincere etc.) addressed to Aymar (Audomaro) de Crane, nobleman, lord of the place de Strata, and Joan his wife, noblewoman, of the diocese of Térouane (Morinen.).
  • 12. The paper at the end of the volume is worm eaten, and the writing is thereby injured.
