To William, earl of Douglas, of the diocese of St. Andrews Indult to choose the dean of his chapel or any other fit priest as his confessor who may, as often as opportune, after hearing his confession and the confessions of the domestic commensal members of his household, grant them absolution and enjoin penance, except in cases reserved to the apostolic see; and that the said dean or confessor may grant to him and them the sacrament of Eucharist and other sacraments except during Easter, when they shall go therefor to the church of the parish within which they shall be. To all faithful. Relaxation in perpetuity of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on the feast of St. Bride and on the day of its octave, from the first to the second vespers of each, visit and give alms for the completion, conservation and maintenance of the parish church, erected by papal authority into the collegiate church of St. Bride, Douglas, in the diocese of Glasgow, which William, earl of Douglas has at great cost caused to be new built; (fn. 4) with grant that the provost or one of the canons, appointed by him or by the chapter, may hear the confessions of all faithful who go to the said church in order to obtain the said indulgence, on the said feast and during the whole of its octave, and grant absolution even in cases specially reserved to bishops and ordinaries, but not in cases reserved to the apostolic see. Restitution, as below. Eugenius IV separated all the tithes, great and small, then belonging to the rector and vicar of the parish church of Rathaw in the diocese of St. Andrews, and applied them to the collegiate church of Corstroffyn’ in the said diocese. At the recent petition of William de Lauedre, lord of Hauton and of all the parishioners of the said parish church, containing that on account of the said separation the said church, which has a great and populous parish, has been much weakened and neglected, and that the cure of the parishioners can ill be borne, the pope hereby separates from the said collegiate church all the tithes etc, which formerly belonged to the portion of the vicar of the said parish church, value not exceeding 8l. sterling, and grants and assigns them for the portion of a vicar to be again instituted in the said parish church. He moreover erects in the said parish church another vicarage, and makes provision thereof, value not exceeding 8l., to Thomas de Lauedre, priest, of the said diocese, of a race of barons, who was lately successively dispensed by papal authority, as the son of an unmarried knight and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice [even with cure etc.] and to hold two other benefices [with cure or otherwise incompatible etc.], and appoints him to be the new vicar of the said church, with the said tithes; with mandate hereby to the chancellor of Dunb[l]ane to induct him or his proctor etc. Ad fut. rei mem. Confirmation of the college of theologians and artists of St. Salvator which, as James, bishop of St. Andrews, has set forth before the pope, he formerly founded and endowed in the city of St. Andrews, for thirteen persons, after the number of the apostles, the first to be provost and S.T.M., the second to be a licentiate of theology by examination, and the third to be a completed bachelor of theology, four of the rest to be M.A. and priests, and the remaining six to be poor clerks, etc.; with mandate hereby to the bishop of Brechin and the prior and archdeacon of St. Andrews to protect the said college, etc. Ad perp. rei mem.
