(fn. 2) Mandate (the pope having been informed by Cormac Macmurcrataid, (fn. 3) a Cistercian monk of St. Anastasius's without the walls of Rome, that Kienanus Ofergayl, abbot of the Cistercian monastery of St. Mary, Kilbeggan (de Flumine dei), in the diocese of Meath, has committed simony and, a public and notorious fornicator, has dilapidated and alienated the goods of the said monastery, and is much defamed thereof in those parts) if and after the said Cormac (who lately, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a priest, professed of the order of St. Augustine, and an unmarried woman related in the third and third degrees of affinity, had himself made a clerk, and who has openly made his profession of the said [Cistercian] order) accuses Kienanus before the above two, to summon Kienanus, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him, and in that event to make provision to Cormac of the said monastery, value not exceeding 24 marks sterling, and, if they make such provision, to cause him to be blessed by any catholic bishop.   • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian: ‘Calisto iii. 1455. Anno 1, Lib. 1.’ The flyleaf has been almost entirely torn out, the surviving fragment preserving the following words of the usual contemporary description: ‘Primus … tabellion[atus] … et plenaria …,’ and also the word ‘Vis(a).’ Ff. i. and ii. are also almost wholly torn out, so that the volume contains ff. iii.–cccviii. of text. On the bottom edge of the volume is the usual contemporary description which, also, as usual, is hardly legible: ‘Primus de exhibitis, de provisionibus [prelatorum], de regularibus, de litteris dominorum cardinalium, de tabellionatus officio, de conservatoriis anno primo secundo et tertio, et de plenaria [remissione] anno primo domini nostri domini Calisti pape tertii.’
  • 2. i.e. two executors only.
  • 3. The second ‘r’ can hardly be read otherwise than an ‘r,’ but it no doubt represents some other letter (perhaps an ‘e’) in an earlier stage of the passage of the document through the hands of the scribes of the chancery.
  • 4. The qunternion, which begins with f. 278, is headed ‘de remissionibus plenariis,’ a variant of the usual ‘de plenaria remissione,’ which, however, only describes part of the contents.
  • 5. ‘domino loci de Justortford,’ rectius ‘loci in Stortford.’
  • 6. Not clearly written.
  • 7. i.e., as noted above, the heading at the beginning of the quaternion.
  • 8. The text has ‘Johanni,’ which is cancelled and over-written ‘P[etru]s’ [de Varris], the name ‘Thome’ being substituted in the margin, with the explanatory note: ‘Cassatum et correctum de mandato domini Jo. Zamorensis regentis Cancellariam, P. de Varris.’
  • 9. ’Datum Rome apud sanctum Petrum anno incarnationis dominice millesimo quadringentesimo quinquagesimo quinto sexto, decimooctavo Kal. Maii anno primo. The word ‘quinto’ is cancelled and over-written C[onradu]s [de Montepolitiano.]
