(f. 138d.)		 To John Lilford, rector of Aylyngton in the diocese of Lincoln, doctor of laws. Decree, validating from the date thereof, the dispensation granted to him by Nicholas V. under date 3 Non. April anno 8 [1454], the letters of which, by reason of the death of that pope, were not drawn up, to receive and retain for life together with the said church, value not exceeding 40l. sterling, one other benefice, or without that church any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if dignities etc., or two parish churches or their perpetual vicarages, or one of each, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased; with further decree that these presents shall be sufficient proof of the said dispensation. (f. 260.)		 To Vincent Clementis, canon and provost of the church of Valencia (Valentin.), a subdeacon of the pope and collector of the papal camera in England. Commission and mandate to collect the tenth imposed on all Christendom for defence against the Turks. Registered briefly, with ‘Calistus etc.’ address and ‘salutem etc. Cum superioribus annis exigentibus hominum peccatis civitas Constantinopolitana miserabili clade [a perfidis Turcis] fuerit occupata direpta et Christiano sanguine conspersa, ita ut nisi a fidelibus mature subveniatur maiora in dies vulnera illaturi sint fidei nostre, [Nos] volentes, quantum dominus donare dignabitur, omnia undique adiumenta conquirere quibus vires et immanitas prefatorum (sic) Turcorum conteri possint ac imminentibus periculis obviare, de venerabilium fratrum nostrorum sancte Romane ecclesie cardinalium consilio pariter et assensu, unam integram deciman etc. ut supra in quarto folio precedenti, (fn. 3) excepto quod [ista] est pro duobus et ibi est pro uno, usque hic ‘Volentes etiam demum quod antequam officium huiusmodi incipias exercere …. Datum …,’ i.e. before beginning to exercise the said office he is to take oath well to exercise it and otherwise of fealty to Lewis cardinal priest of St. Laurence's in Damaso, the pope's chamberlain, and the preachers and the receivers and bankers (depositarii) whom he shall appoint shall take a like oath to him and to the bishop of the place. Registered briefly, with ‘Calistus etc.’ address and ‘salutem etc. Cum te nuper ad regnum Anglie pro inibi exigenda decima super fructibus ecclesiasticis a sede apostolica indicta et contra Turchos convertenda duxerimus destinandum, te nostrum et apostolice sedis nuncium ac eiusdem decime collectorem constituendo et deputando, prout in aliis litteris nostris plenius continetur, cum[que] nos itaque verisimiliter arbitremur quod inter aliquas personas parcium earum etc., prout proxime supra folio xv. o, (fn. 4) mutatis mutandis eo quia ista pro uno et alia pro duobus, usque Datum Rome apud Sanctum Petrum anno etc. millesimo quadringentesimo quinquagesimo quinto sextodecimo Kal.   • 2. On the back of the volume is the usual modern label, with ‘Cali. iii. Secre. L. i. A. i. Tom. xix.’ Inside it is the usual front half of the original sheepskin binding, with various contemporary notes, chiefly consisting of brief references to various matters contained in the volume. The ‘Rubricelle’ occupy 12 pp., and are headed: ‘Sequuntur Rubricelle libri primi domini Calisti pape iii. anni primi de bullis registratis apud dominum Matheum Johannis d(icti) s(anctissimi) d(omini) n(ostri)pape secretarium.’ At the end is the word ‘Finis,’ below which is ‘Respice in ultimo quinterno qui non est rubricatus.’ Then follows the first quinternion, the first folio of which is blank, except that on the recto it has the contemporary description ‘Quinternus primus libri primi litterarum registratarum apud dominum M(atheum) Joannis s. d. n. Calisti pape iii. secretarium,’ below which is again ‘p(ri)mus’ and also ‘1us.’ There are ff. i. to ccxxxx. + 241 to 264 of text, and beneath the end of the text on f. 264d is ‘Gaspar Blondus.’
  • 3. i.e. a like commission and mandate on ff. 255d–256d, there registered in full, addressed ‘Johanni Soler subdiacono et Guillermo Poncio de Fouelleto canonico et sacriste ecclesie Barchinon., in regnis Aragonum Valentin. Maioricarum et in principatu Cathalonie nunciis nostris, salutem etc. Cum superioribus annis. …’ dated at St. Peter's, Rome, 1455, Id. Sept. anno 1; 3 pp.

Apparently rectius ‘folio iio .’, the reference evidently being to the faculty to the above two nuncios John Soler and William Poncius de Fouelleto (here spelt ‘Foueletto’) registered in full on ff. 257r–258r under the above date 1455, Id. Sept. an. 1, viz. ‘Cum vos nuper … prout in aliis nostris litteris plenius continetur, cumque nos verisimiliter arbitremur …’;cf. above, p. 21.
