(f.1.)		 To the abbot of Monasterevin (de Roseualle) in the diocese of Kildare (Daren.), the archdeacon of Kildare and Eugenius Oconcubayr, a canon of the same. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Emundus Oconallan, priest, of the diocese of Kildare, that Alan (Aulanus) Ocrumule, rector of the parish church of Kylleorbiry (or Kyllcorbiry) alias Cruachan, in the said diocese, has taken offensive arms, and with other armed men engaged in divers conflicts, and with bow and arrow committed homicides, and afterwards boasted of his arrow shots and homicides, has committed perjury and openly kept with him a concubine, (fn. 2) about which and divers other crimes (not here expressed) he is much defamed in those parts, to the shame of the priestly order) if and after Emundus (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, after which he had himself so promoted) accuses Alan before the above three, to summon Alan and others concerned, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove Alan, and in that event to collate and assign the rectory, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, to Emundus. Mandate to collate and assign to Gilacius Osyada, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Kyllmohorog alias Kulm[u]rre in the diocese of Limerick (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, after which he was duly ordained priest and obtained by canonical collation the said vicarage of Kyllmohorog) the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Cumhy (recte Cunchy) in the diocese of Killaloe, value not exceeding 12 marks sterling, void by the death of John Ycorbayn; whether it be so void, or by the non-promotion to the priesthood of Matthew [son] of Laurence Minomara (recte Macnamara), or by the resignation of the said John, or in any other way; notwithstanding that he holds the said vicarage of Kyllmohorog, value not exceeding 4 marks sterling, with which he is hereby dispensed to receive and retain that of Cumhy, notwithstanding the said defect etc. The pope's will is that as soon as by virtue of these presents he obtains peaceable possession of the vicarage of Cumhy, he is to resign that which he now holds [i.e. Kyllmohorog]. (f. 49.)		 To the abbot of St. Columba's Celle nigre, Derry, the prior of Dungemyn in the diocese of Derry and Henry Omuriessan, a canon of Derry. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Bernard Macmenman alias Odomnayll, clerk, of the diocese of Raphoe, that Thomas Orodayh, rector of the parish church of Teacbuyn in the said diocese, when litigating in those parts with Donald Obuy, priest, of the said diocese, about the said rectory before certain executors appointed by the apostolic see, paid to them the sum of 8 marks sterling in order that they might adjudge the rectory to him, and also promised to give and pay to the said Donald for life, without any authority of the said see, a certain sum upon the fruits of the rectory, in order that he might acquiesce in such pretence, thereby committing simony and incurring the sentences etc. promulgated against simoniacs, and that moreover, an open and notorious fornicator, he has kept openly in his house a certain concubine by whom he has begotten offspring still living, and that he has committed perjury, to the shame of the clerical order) if and after Bernard, who was lately made a clerk, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, accuses Thomas, who is a priest, and from fear of whose power Bernard has no hope of obtaining justice in the city and diocese of Raphoe, before the above three, to summon Thomas and others concerned, and if they find the foregoing to be true, or one of them enough for the purpose, to deprive and remove Thomas, and in that event to collate and assign the said rectory, value not exceeding 12 marks sterling, to Bernard, whom the pope hereby dispenses to be promoted to all even holy orders and receive and retain it, notwithstanding the said defect etc., and to resign it, simply or for exchange, when he pleases. The pope has learned that the rectory of rural lands called the rectory of Cunhy and Ocaissyn in the diocese of Killaloe (Laonien.), with cure and of the patronage of laymen, is void because Thady Maconma[ra], when holding it, obtained the perpetual vicarage of the parish church de Rylleo genendi (sic) in the same diocese, collated to him by authority of the ordinary, and has been so long void that by the Lateran statutes its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see; although the said Thady has by his own temerity, and without any papal dispensation or any tittle of right, (fn. 8) unduly detained it for five years, and still detains it, together with the saidvicarage. The pope therefore orders the above provost to collate and assign to Henry Olladrayn, priest, of the said diocese, if found fit, who from fear of Thady's power has no hope of obtaining justice in the city and diocese of Killaloe, the said rectory, value not exceeding 25 marks sterling, summoning and removing Thady and any other unlawful detainer. Mandate to collate and assign to Andrew Kylqhous, priest, of the diocese of Aberdeen, bachelor in decrees (who was lately dispensed by papal authority, on account of illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all [even holy] orders and receive and retain a benefice even with cure, and afterwards to receive and retain any mutually compatible benefices of any number and kind, with or without cure. even if canonries and prebends, dignities, etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased) the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Alnes in the diocese of Ross, value not exceeding 4l. sterling, so long void by the death of Andrew Ros that by the Lateran statutes its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see; summoning and removing Thomas Hervi, priest, of the said diocese of Aberdeen, who under pretext of a collation and provision made to him by authority of the ordinary after the said lapse has unduly detained possession for about seven months. (f. 96.)		 To Cormac Osyridean. Nimeas Odioma (recte Odroma) and John Machmaelmarthaim, canons of Kilmore. Mandate as below. The pope has been informed by Sesfredus (? recte Seffredus i.e. Soffredus (?) or Goffredus) Macbradaid, clerk, of the diocese of Kilmore, that William Maqmeol (or Maqnieol, etc.), priest, of the said diocese, in order to obtain the perpetual vicarage of the plebs of Culbridin alias Seentuamair in the said diocese, of the patronage of laymen, made a bargain with the late John Macgnaissa, then vicar of the said plebs, and promised him that if he resigned it in William's favour, and if provision were made thereof to William, he would pay John yearly a part of its tithes; that John resigned it to Thady bishop of Kilmore who, perhaps ignorant of the said corruption, admitted the resignation by his ordinary authority, and made collation and provision to William, who in virtue thereof obtained possession and paid the said part of the tithes to John for some years, thereby incurring simony and the penalties promulgated therefor. The pope therefore orders the above three, if and after Sesfredus, who is illegitimate, being the son of an unmarried man of a noble and ducal race and an unmarried woman, related in the triple fourth degrees of affinity, accuses William before the above three, to summon William and others concerned, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to declare the said collation and provision and their consequences null, and remove William, and in that event to collate and assign the vicarage, with cure and value not exceeding 3 marks sterling, if the patrons consent, to Sesfredus; notwithstanding that the pope lately made him provision of a canonry of Kilmore with reservation of a prebend and a dignity etc. therein, and also of a benefice with or without cure, even if etc., in the collation etc. of the said bishop or the chapter etc. of the said church, and dispensed him to receive and retain such canonry and prebend and dignity etc. and such benefice. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Maurice Okaan, clerk, of the diocese of Derry (Deren.), that Donald Okaan, rector of the parish church of St. Cainnech, Drumachose (Sancti Canici de D[r]umcosa), called the comorbanship de Roho, in the said diocese, has killed a layman, who was dwelling in the said diocese, and perpetrated wilful murder and committed simony and perjury, about which things he is much defamed in those parts, to the shame of the priestly order) if and after Maurice (who was lately made a clerk, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, and is in about his twenty-first year, and who from fear of Donald's power has no hope of obtaining justice in the city and diocese of Derry) accuses Donald before the above official, to summon Donald and others concerned, and if he find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove Donald, and in that event to collate and assign the rectory, with cure and value not exceeding 40 marks sterling, to Maurice. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Cormac Magabraim, clerk, of the diocese of Kilmore, that Rory Magabraim, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Tempulpurt alias Inspremuyd in the same diocese, has wounded a clerk with an arrow and committed perjury, and thereby incurred sentence of excommunication etc., and being excommunicate and publicly proclaimed excommunicate has celebrated and taken part in masses and other divine offices, even in contempt of the Keys, thereby incurring irregularity) if and after Cormac, who is illegitimate, being the son of an Augustinian canon, a priest noble, and an unmarried woman, accuses Rory before the above three, to summon Rory and others concerned, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove Rory, and in that event to collate and assign the said vicarage, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, to Cormac, whom the pope hereby dispenses to receive and retain it, and be promoted to all even holy and priest's orders, notwithstanding the said defect etc. Vite etc. (O. and A. de Tuscanis. | O. xxvi. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Fergallus Magellahuly, clerk, of the diocese of Ardagh, that John Magellahuly, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Killtachmuirca (fn. 12) in the said diocese, has committed simony and perjury and, being willingly under sentence of excommunication, has celebrated and taken part in masses and other divine offices, even in contempt of the Keys, and, a notorious fornicator, has openly kept a concubine, and has not desisted from his concubinage, although duly admonished) if and after Fergallus accuses John before the above three, to summon John and others concerned, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove John, and in that event to collate and assign the said vicarage, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, to Fergallus; whether it become void by such deprivation and removal, or be void by the death of John Ylamud, or in any other way. Wenzel's ‘An. 4 to. 3.’ A contemporary and damaged flyleaf has, in different contemporary hands, the description: ‘Primus de beneficis vacantibus anno quarto domini nostri domini Pii pape ii,’ the order: ‘R(ecipe) Matheus, P. (i.e. P. de Varris),’ and the corresponding: ‘Rubricatus [est] per Matheum’ (the rest of the name has gone). A like contemporary description: ‘Primus …’ occurs as usual on the bottom edge of the volume. There are i.–cccx. ff. of text.

The pope's will seems to nullify the dispensation which he has just granted.

  • 6. Here with the spellings ‘Iniscronan,’ ‘Osyda’ and ‘obtentam.’ This is an example of what very rarely occurs in the Registers, namely, the registration twice of the same bull. Apparently there were two expeditions, one on 6 March and the other on 23 March, 1461–2. The larger amount of space occupied in the second case is due to the larger writing of the scribe who registered it.
