1 Paul II.

[DE Diversis Formis.]

1464.
16 Kal. Oct.
(16 Sept.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 7d.)
To all Christ's faithful, etc. Decree, as below. Pius II, having learned that to the parish church of St. Mary, Kersey, called de Pietat(e) (fn. 2), in the diocese of Norwich, there was a great resort of the faithful on account of the infinite miracles which by the merits and intercessions of the same Virgin had been and were bèing wrought daily by Almighty God at a certain image (fn. 3) of her in the said church, granted in perpetuity, under date Id. March anno 6 [1464], to all who, being truly penitent and having confessed, visited on the feasts of the Annunciation and Nativity of the said Virgin, from the first to the second vespers, and gave alms for the enlargement and restoration (fn. 4) of the said church, an indulgence of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance, the said grant to be null and void if any similar and unexpired indulgence had been granted by the said pope. Inasmuch as pope Pius died before his letters were drawn up, the pope hereby decrees that the present letters shall suffice as proof of the said indulgence. Romani gesta pontificis. (P. and G. Blondus. P xxv. de Varris.) [2¼ pp.]
Ibid.
(f. 43d.)
To John, [bishop] elect of Ardfert. Grant, as below. Pius II., with the advice of the cardinals, of whom the present pope was one, made provision to the said John of the said see. Subsequently, upon his setting forth that on account of the hindrance of his enemies he could not take all the fruits etc. of his episcopal mensa, which were taxed in the books of the apostolic Camera at 60 gold florins of the Camera, and that his episcopal estate could not be maintained therewith, the said pope granted him, under date 6 Kal. Aug. anno 3 [1461], indult and dispensation to hold, even after he should be consecrated, or after the canonical time for consecration should have expired, and as long as he should be bishop of the said see, the parish churches of St. Mary, Kynkan, and Deyliffort (recte Deylisfort), in the dioceses of Lincoln and Worcester, value not exceeding 12 and 2 marks sterling respectively, which he was holding together by papal dispensation at the time of the said provision, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. Lest the said dispensation remain without effect, because the said pope died before his letters were drawn up, the pope hereby grants that the present letters shall be sufficient proof thereof. Rationi congruit. (P. and Ja. de Risonibus. | P. l. de Varris.) [2¼ pp. See above, p. 106.]

Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Italian:Paolo II. 1464. Anno 1. Lib. 6. There is no contemporary end-paper, nor does the usual enumeration by Mgr. Wenzel appear. The contemporary description occurs, however, although not very legible, on the bottom edge of the volume, as usual, viz.: Primus de diversis, de litteris dominorum cardinalium, tabellionatus officio, plenaria remissione anno primo domini nostri domini Pauli pape ii. There are ff. [i.—iii.]—ccxxxiii. of text, + (numbered in pencil by a modern hand) 234–300.
  • 2. parrochialis ecclesia beate Marie de Kersey, which is immediately continued into the margin by the words ‘de pietat(e) [really ending with the abbreviation sign which normally represents ‘t(is)’] nuncupata,’ subscribed by P.
  • 3. ymaginem.
  • 4. ampliacio et reformacio.
  • 5. ‘et dilecte in Christo filie Johanne eius uxori’ is added in the margin by ‘P.’
  • 6. Not clear.
  • 7. The day of the month is omitted. As the indult is registered immediately after that to Robert Welchman, its date was perhaps the same.
  • 8. III written.
  • 9. Without the ‘each of them’ clause.
