Mandate to dispense John Auger, of Oterynden', layman, and Margaret [daughter] of John Chirche, mulier, of his diocese (who, as their recent petition contained, contracted marriage per verba alias legitime de presenti, in ignorance of the existence of an impediment of spiritual relationship arising from the fact that, as they afterwards learned, Alice, John's mother, had been godmother at Margaret's christening), to remain in or re-contract the said marriage, proclaiming past offspring, if any, and future offspring legitimate. To the bishop of Glasgow. Mandate, if he find him fit, etc., to dispense Robert de Hamylton, scholar, of his diocese, who is in the eleventh year of his age, on account of his illegitimacy, as the son of a subdeacon and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to minor orders, and, as soon as he has been made a clerk, to receive and retain for life any two benefices without cure, even if they be canonries and prebends, and, when he is of lawful age, to be promoted to all even holy orders and receive and retain for life any two benefices with cure compatible with one another, even if they be major or principal dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases; notwithstanding the said defects of birth and age etc. Ex parte dilecti filii. To all Christ's faithful who shall see the present letters. Relaxation in perpetuity (the pope having learned that the brethren and sisters of the confraternity of Clothiers of Coventry, (fn. 2) considering that the plague often raged in the said city, have newly (fn. 3) erected an altar under the name of Jesus in the parish church of St. Michael's, Coventry, to the end that Almighty God, appeased by the prayers of the faithful, might deliver the said city from the said plague; that they cause masses to be celebrated at the said altar every Friday (fn. 4) to the honour of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that the faithful resort thereto) of three years and three quarantines of enjoined penance to all who, being penitent and having confessed, visit the said altar on the feasts of St. Michael the Archangel and the dedication of the said church, from the first to the second vespers, and give alms for its conservation, maintenance and ornamentation. If similar indulgence, in perpetuity or for a time not yet elapsed, have been granted by the pope, the present letters shall be null and void. Pastoris eterni. To the provost of the church of Meffan in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate, at the recent petition of John Benyng, perpetual vicar of the parish church of Kyikcaldy (recte Kyrkcaldy) in the diocese of St. Andrews (containing that he is too old to exercise the cure of souls of the parishioners, etc., and that he therefore desires that William Tod, priest, of the said diocese, may be deputed to exercise the said cure and to be his vicar, and that 13 marks of the usual money of Scotland, which do not exceed 3l. sterling, may be assigned to him from the fruits etc. of the said vicarage) if he find the facts to be as stated, and the said William to be fit, and the consent of the bishop of St. Andrews and others concerned be given, to depute the said William to be vicar and to exercise the said cure, assign him the said sum, and grant him licence to administer the sacraments to the said parishioners, grant them absolution, in cases only which are permitted to rectors of parish churches, and enjoin a salutary penance. The pope further grants to the said William that he cannot be removed from the said exercise by the said John or by the vicar of the said church for the time being, without reasonable cause, and until with the help of the said John or such vicar provision has been made to him of a perpetual chaplaincy or other benefice of equivalent value. Indult to him, who is B.A., to take for seven years the fruits etc. of his benefices, except only the daily distributions, and not to be bound to reside in them, whilst studying letters in an university, or residing in the Roman court or one of his benefices.
