To the archbishop of Kolossi (Colocen.), the dean of Raphoe and Patrick Maccarmvys, (fn. 2) canon of the same. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Fergallus Igallenvayr alias Macgellage, priest, of the diocese of Raphoe, contained that after the present pope's renewal of all sentences of excommunication etc. against simoniacs, on the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of the place of Drumthuoma in the said diocese becoming void by the death of David Obeyge (fn. 3) extra Romanam curiam, the said Fergallus promised to Laurence, bishop of Raphoe, a certain sum of money to the end that the said bishop should make him provision thereof, that he paid it, and that the said bishop made him collation and provision by his ordinary authority, under pretext of which he took possession, and has held it for about three years, taking the fruits etc., thereby incurring simony and the sentences etc. therefor, and irregularity. The said collation and provision being therefore without force, and the said vicarage being still void as above, the pope hereby orders the above three to absolve Fergallus from the said simony and sentences etc., enjoining a salutary penance, dispense him on account of irregularity contracted, and rehabilitate him, and in that event to collate and assign to him the said vicarage, value not exceeding 12 marks sterling, but he is first to resign it. Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern description in Latin: 1471. An. vii. Paulus ii., and on a modern end-paper is Mgr., Wenzel's ‘An. 7. to. 10.’ A contemporary end-paper has in contemporary hands (i) the description: Primus de prebendis vacantibus et de diversis anno viiodomini nostri domini Pauli pape ii.; (ii) the order: ‘R(ecipe) Noxe (i.e. presumably [P. de] Noxeto), P.’; (iii) the answering ‘Rubricatus est,’ but without the name of the rubricator; (iv) two or three contemporary scribbles, e.g. ‘Maximinus Magnalia,’ and ‘Formosus.’ The same contemporary description occurs, as usual, on the bottom edge of the volume, viz., ‘Primus de prebendis vacantibus [et] de diversis,’ etc. There are ff. i.–cccxxxvii. of text, followed by f. cccxxxviii., which is blank, except for two or three scribbles on the back, e.g. verses 446–7 of Verg. Aencid, ix.:Fortunati ambo si quid mea carmina possunt nulla dics umquam memori uos estimet [sic] [aeuo].
  • 2. The last letter but two has been corrected, perhaps from a ‘y.’ The result is not clear, but the letter appears to be a ‘v,’ rather than an ‘o.’
  • 3. or Obayge—the third letter has been obscured by correction.
  • 4. The foliation is defective at this point. Thus, f. clxxxviii. is followed by f. cxc., after which comes f. cc.
  • 5. ‘bacallario in artibus’ is cancelled by ‘N. [Garilliati],’ and the corresponding incipitLitterarum scientia’ is therefore cancelled by the same ‘N.,’ leaving the ordinary plain incipitVite ac morum honestas.’
  • 6. See the preceding note.
