Safe conduct, valid during two years, for Thomas Hope, canon of York, a papal chamberlain, doctor of laws, whom the pope is sending on arduous business of the pope and the apostolic see to the king of England and to Thomas, cardinal priest of St. Ciriac's in T[h]ermis, cardinal of Canterbury, and for his retinue to the number of ten. Universis et singulis … Cum dilectum filium. [⅓ p.]

1474. 5 Non. May. (3 May.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 172r.)	To Duncan Bulle, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, M.A. Dispensation etc., as below. He was dispensed by the late Andrew, bishop of Glasgow, nuncio of the apostolic see (under pretext of an alleged special power from the said see, whereas he had not such power), on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and a married woman, to be promoted to all holy orders, even priest's orders, and minister therein, even in the office of the altar, and hold two compatible benefices, even if one had cure and were an elective dignity, etc., and to resign or exchange them, etc., in virtue of which he was so promoted. The pope hereby dispenses him to minister in the said orders, and hold any compatible benefices, even if major or principal and elective dignities, etc., and to resign or exchange them, etc.; and grants that in future impetrations etc. he need not mention the said defect and dispensations. 1474. Prid. Id. May. (14 May.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 201r.)	To William Schewes, archdeacon of St. Andrews, M.A. Dispensation etc., as below. He was formerly dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and subsequently by Patrick, archbishop of St. Andrews, who alleged that he had special power, to hold therewith one other benefice, even if an elective dignity etc. and even with cure, after the first of which dispensations he was made a clerk. The pope now, at his petition and that of James king of Scots, dispenses him (to whom provision has this day been made of the previously reserved archdeaconry of St. Andrews, a non-major dignity, value 60l. sterling, and whom the pope has dispensed to receive and retain it [see above, p. 33]), to receive with the archdeaconry any two other benefices, or without them any three benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if major or principal dignities, etc., and also to receive any compatible benefices, etc., and to retain them for two years, and resign or exchange them all, etc., provided that he do not hold more than two parish churches or perpetual vicarages. 1471[–2]. 6 Id. March. (10 March.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 227r.)	To James and Margaret, king and queen of Scotland. (fn. 1) Indult for life that the present dean and the dean for the time being of the chapel royal of St. Mary the Virgin in the diocese of St. Andrews, or one or two priests in the said chapel appointed by the dean, may for their lifetime hear their confessions, even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, grant them absolution, and enjoin penance, and may grant them, being penitent and having confessed, plenary remission of all their sins, once in life and once in the hour of death. Safe conduct, valid during one year, for Peter de Aleprandis, doctor of decrees, the pope's acolyte and nuncio, who is going to England on business of the pope and the apostolic see, and for a retinue of four horses. Univ. et sing. … Cum impresentiarum. [¼ p.]
1471. 8 Kal. April. (25 March.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 273r.)	Plenary remission of all their sins, valid for six years only, for all who, being truly penitent and having confessed, visit on the feast of the Nativity of St. John Baptist next to come, and in the years following, (fn. 2) from the first to the second vespers, the church of the preceptory of the house of St. John of the Hermits in Torphium, (fn. 3) in the diocese of St. Andrews (which is held in great honour and reverence in those parts, to which the faithful resort on account of its ancient indulgences, and the buildings of which are by reason of age etc. partly fallen, and partly are threatened with ruin, and for which James, king of Scots, has a great affection), and who give alms for the repair of the said buildings; with faculty for the preceptor to choose as many confessors as opportune to absolve such penitents on the two days before and the two days after the said feast, even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, and to commute their vows, except the three greater vows (preterquam tria substantialia). The offerings are to be placed in a chest with three keys, and one third is to be given to the collector of the Camera, the other two being devoted to the said repair, etc. Univ.
