To Andrew Yhowyng, clerk, of the diocese of Glasgow, bachelor in decrees, a member of the pope's household. Dispensation for him (who is also a continual commensal of the pope, and was formerly dispensed on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, by authority of the ordinary to be made a clerk and be promoted to all minor orders and hold a benefice without cure, and by papal authority to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, in virtue of which he was made a clerk), to receive and retain for life any two benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if major or principal dignities, etc., and to resign or exchange them, etc. Grata familiaritatis. Mandate, at the petition of Robert Talbott, layman, and Eleanor Cantour, mulier, of the diocese of Ely (containing that Robert often (pluries) carnally knew Eleanor for about three years during her husband's lifetime, and begat offspring by her, but that they did not compass the said husband's death, nor promise one another during his lifetime to marry after his death), to absolve them from the crime of adultery, enjoining penance, and thereafter to dispense them to marry, decreeing the offspring to be born of such marriage legitimate. Mandate to dispense Robert Ros', clerk, of the diocese of Glasgow (who was playing with another student in a certain college at an university, when the latter accidentally hit him in the left eye with a cabbage stalk, with the result that a membrane formed over the pupil, which blinded the eye, (fn. 1) but has left it otherwise whole), if he find the facts to be as stated, and if there be not so much deformity as is likely to cause scandal, to dispense Robert to be promoted to all, even holy orders and minister therein, even in the ministry of the altar, notwithstanding the said defect etc. Apostolice sedis. Indult to choose any priest, secular or regular, as his confessor, who may, after hearing his confession, absolve him from any sentences of excommunication, etc., and from any sins, etc., even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, and enjoin penance; may dispense him on account of irregularity contracted, and rehabilitate him; and may grant him plenary remission of all his sins, once in life and once in the hour of death; with the usual safe-guarding clauses. To the abbot of Whitby, and the priors of Bridlington and Watton, in the diocese of York. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Thomas Hexham, cellarer of the priory of Newburgh, O.S.A., in the diocese of York, contained that on the voidance of the priory by the death of William Helmsley without the Roman court, the convent duly and unanimously elected him, and that he consented to the election, and sought confirmation thereof by the dean and chapter of York, the see being then void; that they refused to confirm it, and proceeded to examine the validity of an election made de facto of Thomas Yarom, a canon of the said priory, by certain of the canons, as if it were still void as above, wherefore he has appealed to the apostolic see. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three to summon the said Thomas Yarom and others concerned, hear both sides, and decree what is just, without appeal. Humilibus supplicum votis. To Edward, king of England. Indult to choose any priest, secular or regular, as his confessor, who may, after hearing his confession, absolve him from any sentences of excommunication, etc., and from any transgressions of vows, omissions of fasts and feasts and enjoined penances, and from all his sins, etc., howsoever grave and enormous, (fn. 3) even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, being contrite therefor and having confessed, even from forgotten sins, etc., namely in such reserved cases once only in life and once in the hour of death, and in other cases as often as opportune, enjoining penance; commute any vows of pilgrimage and abstinence, but not of chastity, and grant him plenary remission of all his sins, also once in life and once in the hour of death; with the usual safe-guarding clauses.
