To the bishop of Salisbury. Mandate, at the recent petition of Mary Asherdon, a nun of Ambresbury, of the order of Fontevrault, in the diocese of Salisbury (containing that after she had made her profession as a nun of the said monastery she allowed herself to be carnally known several times (fn. 8) by a certain man, a regular, (fn. 9) and has had offspring), to absolve her from the said excess, enjoining a salutary penance, and rehabilitate her. In the event of the bishop's so doing, the pope hereby grants her indult and dispensation to have her voice in the convent, and her jewels, (fn. 10) chambers and all her goods, as before the said lapse, and to be elected, etc., to any dignities, etc., of the said monastery and order. To the dean of Cashel. Mandate to receive and admit by papal authority the resignation which Richard, abbot of St. Mary's, Abington (de Wothnya), O. Cist., in the diocese of Emly (Imelacen.), proposes to make of the said monastery, and to make provision of it, value 40 marks sterling, to Florence Quinleian (?), a monk professed of the said monastery, who was lately dispensed by authority of the ordinary (fn. 11) on account of illegitimacy, as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to all, even holy orders. The pope hereby specially dispenses him to be appointed to and to administer it, etc., notwithstanding the said defect, etc., and also grants that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop of his choice in communion with the apostolic see, who shall, after blessing him, receive from him the usual oath of fealty, according to the form enclosed, and send it by his letters patent, sealed with his seal, to the pope. (27 Feb.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 137v.)
To the chancellor of Lismore. Mandate, as below. The pope recapitulates the letters of Paul II ordering the precentor of Lismore to make provision of the Cistercian abbey of St. Mary, Inishlounaght (de Surio), in the diocese of Lismore, to William Ydonochow, then a monk thereof, in the room of Dermit Ohyffirnayn, who had caused former papal letters, ordering the bishop of Lismore to deprive him, to be seized in England on their way from the Roman court, as is more fully contained in the said letters [dated 21 Jan., 1468/9, and summarized in Cal. Papal Lett., vol. XII, p. 309]. (fn. 13) Seeing that, as the same [sic] petition [of the said William] added, (fn. 14) the said later letters of the said pope were also similarly seized, and their execution thereby prevented, and that the present pope has, at the instance of the said William, caused them to be transcribed from the register [and] inserted in other letters of his own, as is more fully contained therein, he hereby orders the above chancellor, if and after his said other letters have been presented to him, to proceed to the execution of the said letters of Paul II so inserted, as if the letters of that pope had been directed and presented to him from the beginning. Summi dispositione rectoris. [2 pp. See also ibid., p. 186, and below, p. 414.]

The pope now grants to him, who is of noble birth, indult that in the obtaining of such canonry and prebend, etc. of Brechin and such benefice he may enjoy the same precedence as certain continual commensal members of the pope's household. Nobilitas generis, litterarum etc. (At the end: Jo. xxx. Octavo Id. Aprilis anno quarto. Fortin.) [11/5 pp.]

To the abbots of St. Mary's, Ferns (Fernen.), and Donnbrothy, and the prior of St. John's by Innyscorthy, in the diocese of Ferns. Mandate to collate and assign to John Roche, a canon of Ferns, the rectory of St. Mary's, Wexford (de Weyffordia [sic]), in the diocese of Ferns, of lay patronage, with cure, and value 16 marks sterling, so long void by the deprivation, made by authority of the ordinary, of Edmund Janys, in which deprivation he acquiesced, that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see, although John Neuyl, (fn. 15) priest, under pretext of an exchange which was made with the said Edmund after and against the said lapse deprivation and res judicata, and which was therefore null, has detained possession for between about two and three years; summoning and removing the said John Neuyl. Vite etc. (At the end: Jo. xx. Septimo Id. Maii anno quarto. Fortin.) [2 pp.]

15 Kal. May.
(17 April.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 229v.)
To the abbot of St. Mary's, Fermoy (de Castro dei), [and] the prior of St. Thomas the Martyr's by Buttevant (juxta Bothonium [sic]), in the diocese of Cloyne (Clonen.), and the dean of Cloyne. Mandate to unite for the lifetime of Gerald [son] of Gerald de Geraldinis, clerk, of the diocese of Lismore, who is by both parents of noble birth, the deanery of Lismore, a major elective dignity with cure, value 30 marks sterling, and the perpetual vicarage of Killiromayn in the said diocese, value 8 marks sterling, so long void that the collation of them has lapsed to the apostolic see, although Gillasius Okeit and Richard Ketynng, priests, have respectively detained possession of the deanery and vicarage for between twenty-six and thirty years, and for about a year, respectively, without any title, from fear of whose power the said Gerald cannot safely meet them in the city or diocese of Lismore, and moreover, in the event of their making the said union, to collate and assign the said deanery and vicarage to the said Gerald, summoning and removing the said Gillasius and Richard. Apostolice sedis providentia circumspecta. (At the end: N. xxv. Tercio Kal. Maii anno quarto. Garilliati.) [3 pp.]
9 Kal. May.
(23 April.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 234r.)
To Henry Roche, dean of Ferns. Collation and provision, as below. It has been set forth to the pope this day on his behalf that without mentioning that he had a small spot in his left eye, or rather a defect of vision, so that he could not easily read small letters, although he could to some extent read large ones, the said eye showing no deformity, (fn. 17) he had himself promoted to minor, and afterwards to subdeacon's orders; that subsequently, upon the voidance of the deanery of Ferns, a major dignity, by the death of Nicholas Ketyng (fn. 18)extra R.c., the chapter elected him dean; that he consented to the election and had it confirmed by authority of the ordinary; and that after he had obtained possession, under pretext of the said election and confirmation, he had himself promoted to deacon's and priest's orders, also without mentioning the said defect, and ministered therein, but not in contempt of the Keys, taking the fruits of the said deanery for about seven years, wherefore the pope has by other letters dispensed him to minister in the said orders and in the ministry of the altar, notwithstanding the said defect, but requiring him to resign. The said deanery being therefore still void as above, and ipso facto reserved under Paul II's reservation to himself of all major dignities, void and to become void, and (the said pope having died without disposing of it) still reserved to the present pope, the pope hereby makes to him, who is of noble birth, collation and provision of the said deanery, elective and with cure, and value 30 marks sterling. Nobilitas generis, vite etc.
Concurrent mandate to the abbot of St. Mary's, Ferns (Fernen.), and the prior of SS. Peter and Paul the Apostles’ and the prior of St. John the Evangelist's, in the diocese of Ferns. Hodie dilecto filio. (At the end: Jo. xii., x. Septimo Id. Maii anno quarto. Fortin.) [3⅓ pp.]
1474[–5].
13 Kal. March.
(17 Feb.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 270v.)
To the abbot of St. Mary's, Fermoy (de Castro dei), in the diocese of Cloyne (Clonen.), and John [son] of Maurice de Geraldinis and Dermit Okywe, canons of Cloyne. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Donatus Omoruchw, clerk, of the diocese of Cloyne, contained that after he had obtained by canonical collation the rectory of Moille in the said diocese, of lay patronage, he detained possession for more than a year, without having himself ordained to holy and priest's orders, and has detained it for about other seven years. The said rectory, which has cure, and the value of which does not exceed 4 marks sterling, being therefore void by the said non-promotion, the pope hereby orders the above three to collate and assign it to the said Donatus. Before they proceed to execute these presents, he is to resign it. Sedes apostolica, pia mater. (At the end: Jo. xiii. Octavo Kal. Maii anno quarto. Fortin.) [2 pp.]
