To the bishop and the treasurer of Kilfenora (Finaboren.), and Terelanus Obrein, a canon of the same. Mandate, as below. The pope has been informed by Luke (Lucas) alias Lucanus Ocovry [sic], clerk, of the diocese of Killaloe (Laonien.), that Donatus Ogradi, a canon of Killaloe, joining to himself a band of armed men, captured a certain layman of the said diocese, and delivered him to his father Nicholas Ogrady, who, with Luke's knowledge and consent, mutilated the said layman and nearly blinded him. (fn. 2) The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three, if the said Luke (who is illegitimate, being the son of unmarried parents related in the third and simple fourth degrees of affinity, and the double fourth of kindred, notwithstanding which he has been made a clerk, and whom the pope hereby absolves from the oath which he took in fear, as he alleges, not to impetrate the below-mentioned canonry and prebend, and who from fear of the said Donatus cannot safely meet him in the city or diocese of Killaloe), will accuse the said Donatus before them, to summon the latter, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him from his canonry of Killaloe and prebend of Thomgreni therein, and in that event to collate and assign them, value not exceeding 20 marks sterling, to the said Luke. Mandate to reserve to Mark Magynd, clerk, of the diocese of Dromore (who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all even holy and priest's orders and hold a benefice even with cure, [after] which he had himself made a clerk), a benefice with or without cure, value 25 marks sterling if with cure, or 18 if without, in the gift etc. of the bishop and the archpriest and chapter etc. of Dromore, and, moreover, upon the voidance of such benefice, to collate and assign it to him. To Alice, duchess of Suffolk. (fn. 6) Indult, she being broken with age, to choose a fit priest, secular or religious, as her confessor, who, after hearing her confession, may grant her absolution, and enjoin a salutary penance, once only in cases reserved to the apostolic see (with certain exceptions named, and in general the cases contained in the bull of Cena domini), and in other cases as often as shall be opportune; and that the confessor of her choice may, once only, in the hour of death, grant her, being contrite and having confessed, plenary remission of all her sins, with the usual condition of making satisfaction to whom it is due, and the usual clauses against abuse of the present indult, and requiring fasting on Fridays for a year, or giving in alms six groats (sex grossos) of the money of that country, said to be worth half a gold ducat. If she do not so fast, the present grant shall be null and void, as far only as regards plenary remission in the hour of death. Sincere devotionis tue affectus. [1¼ pp.] |
