Vatican Regesta, Vol. DCCXL. (fn. 1)

Bullarum Liber XLIII.

4 AND 5 Innocent VIII.

  • 1. Missing since the 18th century. The MS. Inventarium Archiv. Secre. Vaticani, compiled under Benedict XIII [1724–30] by the then Prefect of the Vatican Archives, Petrus Doninus de Pretis, has on the original folio no. 58 (new folio no 66), the following:—Registrum eiusdem [Innoc. viii] Lit(terarum) An(norum) [4.5?] tom. [43] in char(ta) bomb(acina) conscriptum fol(iorum) 324. Sine Indice sub tegmine rubeo foris signatum no. [340]. The numerals 4.5 and 43 are erased and replaced by dots, but are still faintly visible. The number 340 is also erased, but, like the others, is faintly visible. In the margin is the word ‘deficit.’ The MS. Indice, no. 124, original folio no. 82 (new folio no. 91) verso, has the following:— 50 [i.e. the 50th in order of the Registers of Innoc. viii] Registrum Innoc. viii. id est lib(er) xliii. Bullar(um) sine rub(ricellis) et cum char(is) bombac(inis), 324 in tegmine antiquo 680. The latter description is quoted in the Sussidi per la consultazione dell' Archivio Vaticano, vol. i (Rome, 1926), p. 125. In the ‘office copy’ of the ‘Sussidi’ Mgr. Angelo Mercati, the present Prefect, has added a pencil note: ‘Mancava già nel 1750.’ This appears from a list of missing items drawn up in that year; but the note by de Pretis, above, shows that it had been already missing for about 20 years. See also ibid., p. 83.
