The recent petition of Alexander Childesworth, layman of the town of Sandwich (ville Sandwici) in the diocese of Canterbury, contained that formerly Joan Childesworth, of the parish of Hornchiech [sic], mulier, of the diocese of London, falsely alleging that he was her husband, and that he had put her away and did not treat her with marital affection, brought him before William Pykenham [sic], auditor-general of Thomas, cardinal priest of St. Ciriac's in Thermis (who holds the church of Canterbury by grant and dispensation of the apostolic see, and by reason of the same church is legatus natus of the said see in those parts), upon whose unjust refusal to admit certain articles exhibited on behalf of the said Alexander, the latter appealed to the said see, and has petitioned the pope to commit the causes of the said appeal, etc., and of the principal matter to some upright men in those parts. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three to summon the said Joan and others concerned, hear both sides, taking cognisance of the principal matter also, and declare what is canonical, without appeal, causing their decison to be observed by ecclesiastical censure.
