10 John XXII.

Curial Letters.

1326.
Id. Feb.
Avignon.
(f. 1.)
To the bishop of Worcester. Mandate to call before him William de Alveston and compare the letters by which William de Cotes obtained the rectory of Seynesburi with those which the pope sends under seal, and on their falsity appearing to revoke whatever has been done under them. The letters were addressed to the rector of Aston Somerville, and on them the rector deprived Roger called ‘Drax,’ of Seynesburi, and inducted therein W. Cotes. The bishop knowing the letters to be false sequestrated the fruits of the church, but Cotes violated the sequestration, whereupon the bishop's proctor prayed the pope to take proceedings against him and others who forged the letters. The pope was about to issue an order to the bishop of Winchester, when Cotes was caught in the Roman court, and, on appearing before Peter bishop of Palestrina, confessed that William de Alveston, a clerk of the diocese of Worcester, dictated the said letters, wrote them, and appended the bulla.
