1341. 4 Id. Jan. Avignon. (f. 112d.)	To the abbot of St. Albans, Master Ralph de Turvile, canon of Lichfield, and the official of London. Mandate to execute the ordinances made touching apostates in regard to Walter de Thame, canon of Holy Cross, Waltham, who, by the influence of envious persons, has been compelled, without due cause, to renounce the monastery, and now desires to be reconciled to his order.
9 Kal. Feb. Avignon. (f. 116.)	To the bishop of Glasgow. Mandate to sequestrate the fruits of the prebend of Are, in Glasgow, of which, when void by the death of William de Lindesay, provision was made to Fergus Crauford, canon of the same; but the late bishop John gave it to William, son of Thomas de Lindesay. Fergus having died, pending the determination of the cause, king David, as patron, gave the said prebend to John More, whom the chapter refused to admit. On petition of the king, and of John More, who, for three years has been kept out of the prebend by William, the fruits are sequestered and kept by the bishop, pending More's appeal to the pope.
4 Non. Mar. Avignon. (f. 117d.)	To the bishop of Geneva. Mandate to receive the oaths of John de Blonay, Odo de Verdis, and William de Wichens, knights, of the diocese of Lausanne, and their accomplices, to make satisfaction to William la Zouche, archbishop elect of York, for the violence and robbery committed by them against him, whereby they are excommunicate. On the next Sunday they, at time of high mass in the cathedral of Geneva, are to walk to that church from the bridge of Arar, with a hundred lighted wax torches of six pounds weight apiece, and to stand bareheaded and barefooted before the door of the church until mass is over, when they are to be absolved, and brought into the church, and restored to the communion of the faithful. They are also to give 100s. to the lazar house of Geneva, near which they seized W. la Zouche.

Provision of the rectory of Laudenham, in the diocese of Canterbury, value 20 marks, void by the death, out of England, of John Picardi, to which John de Winston was appointed by the abbot and convent of Faversham, patrons of the same, in ignorance that the appointment was reserved to the pope.
	Concurrent mandate to the abbot of Langdon, and the prior and the archdeacon of Canterbury.
12 Kal. Aug. Avignon. (f. 173d.)	To the bishops of Worcester, Lichfield, and Wells. Mandate to execute the sentences issued against Philip de Ullingwik and William de Thorneburi, who were successively intruded into the rectory of Modeforde, the first by the abbot and convent of Gloucester, its patrons, under Philip's fraudulent representations, and the second as detainer of the fruits of the same, when Philip had been condemned to restore them to Adam de Radenore, who canonically obtained and held the said rectory for a year and a half. On Adam's appeal to pope John XXII. the cause was heard, Philip, during five years, holding the church; and after four sentences had been given in favour of Adam, Philip disregarded them, under pretext of frivolous appeals to the court of Canterbury, and held out for six years, when he resigned the church, making no satisfaction to Adam for fruits received and for losses and expenses, as he was sentenced to do, but procured William de Thornburi to be his successor, who has now held the church for two years and more.
11 Kal. Aug. Avignon. (f. 178d.)	To Master Giles de Stanforde. Provision, at the king's request, and that of the bishop and chapter, of the canonry and prebend of Hereford, void by the death of Richard de Havering, precentor of the same, papal chaplain; notwithstanding that bishop Thomas had made provision of the same, and of the precentorship, to Master Giles, in ignorance that the appointment was reserved to the pope. The precentorship is to be resigned.
	Concurrent mandate to the abbot of St. James's, Wigemore, in the diocese of Hereford, Richard de Thormerton, canon of Exeter, and another named.

Mandate to execute the ordinances touching apostates in regard to William de Standich, monk of Witham, in the diocese of Bath, who, having come to the pope without leave of his superior, has been deprived according to the statutes of the Carthusian order, and now desires to be reconciled thereto.
6 Kal. July. Avignon. (f. 188.)	To William de Eston called ‘Bathon,’ M.A. and regent master of medicine, of the diocese of Bath. Reservation of a benefice, with cure of souls, in the gift of the abbess and convent of Wilton, value 20 marks.

The election was made by Adam called ‘Heroth,’ chancellor, Gilbert, treasurer, and John de Moravia, canon, Alan, having been ordained priest, has been consecrated by Peter, bishop of Sabina.

Mandate to grant a dispensation to Hugh le Despenser, lord of Tewkesbury, son of the late Hugh, and Elizabeth, daughter of William de Monte Acuto, earl of Salisbury, to remain in the marriage contracted by them in order to allay the strife between the said earl and the late Hugh, the king's kinsmen; notwithstanding that Giles de Badelesmere, Elizabeth's former husband, was related to Hugh in the third degree of kindred, and to declare their offspring legitimate.
5 Kal. April. Avignon. (f. 215.)	To Lambert de Paulesholte. Provision, at the king's request, of the rectory St. Mary's, Dounheved, void by the death of Laurence Reine of Bridport, value 20 marks, in the gift of the abbess and convent of Shaftesbury.

Mandate to provide that his officials do not presume to make inhibitions and processes such as they have made against John de Rameseye, rector of Semere, in the diocese of Norwich, who, having had papal provision made to him of that church, has been turned out of it by John de Blakenham, who procured himself to be presented to the bishop of Norwich by the abbot of St. Edmunds, and now holds it, in disregard of a sentence given in favour of John de Rameseye on his appeal to the pope, which sentence his proctor has been unable to carry out, owing to the action of the officials of Canterbury taken under pretext of a frivolous appeal to that court.

May, anno 14, which has been lost, ordering them to show obedience to Robert de Wiville, canon of Lichfield, whom the pope has appointed to the see of Salisbury, void by the death of Roger.

Dispensation to him, being the son of a priest, already dispensed by John XXII. so as to be ordained and hold a benefice, on which he obtained the church of Gateshead, which he has resigned, to hold any other benefice not in a cathedral or collegiate church.
6 Id. May. Avignon. (f. 254.)	To Master Thomas Fastolf, archdeacon of Norwich, papal chaplain and auditor. Indult to enjoy the fruits of his archdeaconry, and other benefices, while engaged in the service of the Roman church. Vicars are to be appointed and paid out of the profits of the benefices.

4 Non. Dec. Avignon. (f. 260.)	To the abbot of Westminster, the dean of Lincoln, and Richard de Tormerton, canon of Exeter. The like in regard to John de Flyctewyk, brother of the lazar-house of St. Mary de Pratis, near St. Albans, priest, which house and brothers are under the jurisdiction of the abbot of St. Albans, and in which are brothers, a prioress, nuns, and sisters; John, having failed to obtain licence from the subprior, went to the Cistercian abbot of Garendon or Gerondon, by whom he was admitted to the hermitage called ‘Crupelgate’ in London, which he left after a year and resumed the Benedictine habit, and without licence came to the pope. He now desires to be reconciled to the Benedictine order.

12 Kal. Jan. Avignon. (f. 312d.)	To the archbishop of Canterbury, the bishop of Chichester, and Master Richard Cadesleye, canon of Salisbury. Mandate to receive information touching the violation of the sequestration of the prebend of Bere and Cherminstre, adjudged to Master Robert de Adria, canon of Salisbury, in the cause between him and Walter de Wyvill, treasurer of the same, who by collation of bishop Robert held the said prebend, into which, pending the trial in the Roman court, Thomas de Hatfelt, rector of Terringe (Tarring), in the diocese of Chichester procured himself to be intruded by the secular power, causing the sequestrator (custodem sequestri) to be expelled. If it be found that Thomas has directly or indirectly violated the sequestration he is to be cited before the pope.
