Mandate to publicly excommunicate those concerned in the matter of the bishop of Norwich, to whom, in the cause against the abbot and convent of St. Edmunds de Buri, claiming exemption from episcopal jurisdiction, by their abettor, Richard Froysel, knight, letters prohibitory were presented from the king's chancery. Although the said knight thereby incurred excommunication, he obtained royal letters citing the bishop and his commissaries to appear before the justices. This they did, and, on their taking exception to the jurisdiction of the court in causes ecclesiastical, the commissaries were ordered to be imprisoned. One of them, James de Wrahenase (Wrabbenese), of the diocese of York, was seized and detained, the others hiding themselves; and the justiciars, in the absence of the king from the realm, ordered the temporalities of the see to be taken until the bishop absolved the knight from the sentence incurred; they also condemned the bishop to pay 10,000l. asserting precedents for such action; upon which the bishop shut himself up in his church at Norwich.
