The pope has received his letters in duplicate touching his secretary, Thomas de Brembre, canon of Salisbury, cited by papal authority at the instance of his adversary, and asking the pope to refrain from such citations, which the king says were formerly issued only in extreme cases against tyrants and rebels of the Roman church. The pope replies that he is not conscious of having injured any of the king's servants, that he wishes to administer justice without respect of persons, and desires the king to take care that his servants do not, through ignorance or dissimulation, make justice yield to injury, or reason succumb to will. He implores the king to restrain the licence of his servants against ecclesiastics, in whose persons an injury is done to the church. |

Touching the matter of complaint about his secretary, Thomas de Brambre, canon of Salisbury, the king asserting that the citation granted to Thomas, bishop of Ely, against some justices and other persons of the realm is in derogation of the laws of England, and that the processes by the said justices against the bishop are duly held. The pope replies as before (2 Kal. June), and adds that the king is not to take it ill if the vicar of Christ defends prelates and their churches when attacked by the justices, not in discharge of their office, but moved by personal hatred. Ignorance is no excuse, and if there be dissimulation the king is implicated in it. The pope beseeches the king (as before) to restrain the licence of his servants, and if the bishop of Ely has transgressed, he is to be made by strict administration of justice to keep the rules of canonical observance. The pope is writing about the same to the cardinal nuncios, to whom the king may give full credence. |
