Mandate, at the recent petition of the Benedictine prioress and convent of Canyngton in the diocese of Bath—containing that at its foundation the said priory was endowed with the fruits etc. in low-lying villages (in villagiis in terra plana), some of which are by the sea, and that by tides and other misfortunes the said fruits etc. have been much diminished— to appropriate to them the parish church of Wytherygge in the diocese of Exeter, of their patronage, value not exceeding 20 marks, (fn. 2) that of the priory not exceeding 60l. sterling. Mandate, at the petition of abbot Nicholas and the convent of the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter, Hyde, near Winchester, to confirm, after enquiry, the appropriation lately made by [the late] John, bishop of Salisbury, who took counsel with Henry, cardinal priest of St. Eusebius's, then bishop of Winchester (seeing that the ancient fruits etc. of the said monastery were diminished and that it lacked the means which it had hitherto possessed for keeping hospitality etc.), of the parish churches, value not exceeding 100 marks, of Pudeltre[n]thide and Chesulden in the diocese of Salisbury, within the archdeaconries of Dorset and Wilts (Wiltesshirie), of the patronage of the abbot and convent, that of the monastery not exceeding 1,500, a portion being reserved by the said bishop for perpetual vicars. Mandate, at the recent petition of William Rycdymer and Richard Gower and other friars of the house of Athnery, of the order of Friars Preachers, in the diocese of Tuam—containing that in Ireland, of which they are natives, there is no supply of preachers and other learned men, by whom the people can be duly taught in the catholic faith— to license them to receive and hold two places in Ireland and to build in each a church or oratory, with bell-tower, bell, cemetery, house, cloister and other needful offices; without requiring licence of the diocesans or any others, and saving the rights of parish churches etc. Sacre religionis. Mandate to collate and assign to Adam Macgillarinan, priest, of the diocese of Connor (who lately received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and whom the pope has ordered this day the above archdeacon to cause to be received as a canon of the Augustinian priory of St. Mary, Mucamyr, in the said diocese, and to receive his profession), after he has been duly admitted and has made his profession, the said priory, which is conventual and elective and has cure, value not exceeding 16 marks, void by the death of Michael Albanach, Luke the present detainer, who has unduly detained possession for more than ten years, being summoned and removed. Confirmation, as below. The recent petition of the friars of the house or priory of Kings Langley, of the order of Friars Preachers, in the diocese of Lincoln, contained that the late Leonard de Florencia, master-general of the order, with the unanimous assent of the diffinitores in the chapter-general then held at Pavia [in 1423], declared that the convent of the said house or priory belonged without distinction, in accordance with its foundation and the custom of the order, to all four visitations of England, and ordained that the government of the said convent should chiefly remain in the hands of the friars of the visitation of Oxford, who by their sole labour and at their sole expense had caused the said priory to be built; and that subsequently on the death of Leonard, Bartholomew Texerii, master-general, removed John Henle from the office of prior of the said house or priory. At the said petition, the pope hereby confirms the said acts of the above masters-general. Ad fut. rei mem. Exposcit nobis injunctum. Mandate, at the petition of James Blacdon, a Friar Preacher, completed (formatus) bachelor of theology—who has studied so hard from his youth that he has already been for several (fn. 4) years a lector of theology in the university of Oxford, and who has read the books of the 'sentences'—after he has responded in a public disputation on some question, and has been found fit after examination by the above Andrew and three other masters of theology, to grant to him the mastership and the licence to teach. To the prior of Wallyngford in the diocese of Salisbury. Mandate as below. The recent petition of the Benedictine abbot and convent of Radynghe set forth that although they have been wont to dilute their drink and prepare their food (potum et cibaria sua temperare et condere) with the water of the river called ‘Carenterbrock’ which flows about (circa) and belongs to their monastery, nevertheless some sons of iniquity who live in the said town, although able to use other waters and rivers which flow in the town, maliciously and in opprobrium of the abbot and convent, pollute the said river to such an extent that at times the abbot and convent shrink from preparing their food and [diluting their] drink with it, and are often rendered indisposed to exercise divine offices. At their petition, praying the pope to help them in the matter with fatherly diligence, he orders the above abbot to warn all persons of either sex in the said town, and forbid them to throw filth into the said river, or otherwise stir it up or pollute it, to excommunicate those who disobey, and cause the sentence to be solemnly published.
