To Nicholas, cardinal priest of St. Cross in Jerusalem, nuncio of the apostolic see with the power of a legate (apostolice sedis nuntio cum potestate legati), for the pacification of the realm of France. Mandate to undertake and execute the mission on which the pope has decided to send him, namely, to go as a nuncio of the apostolic see, with the power of a legate (apostolice sedis nuntium cum potestate legati), in order to pacify the realm of France and bring about concord between the kings etc. of England and France; with the usual faculties hereby to treat for the making of truces and a lasting peace, etc. ‘Quamprimum fuimus divina favente (sic) clementiaeterne beatudinis munera promereri. Datum Rome apud Sanctum Petrum anno Incarnationis Dominice millesimo quatringentesimo tricesimo primo, iii. Kal. Confirmation and grant de novo of the faculties—for the collating of benefices of members of his household, the granting of dispensations and other graces—which Martin V granted to him on sending him to pacify the realm of France, with the office of a legate, the letters containing the said faculties having expired by the death of the said pope before the said legate had entered the limits of his legation. To all archbishops, bishops, abbots, priors, provosts, canons, priests, and ecclesiastical men in the pope's city of Avignon or the comtat Venaissin, present and future, to whom the execution of these presents belongs or may belong. Mandate not to publish in future, without the pope's special mandate, the letters of excommunication which are said to have emanated from the Roman court at the petition of divers Englishmen against Geoffrey Giffardi and other officials, and which have been published in the churches of Avignon; the pope declaring the said letters to be suspended. To Master John de Obizis, canon of Ferrara, papal chaplain, collector of the papal camera and nuncio of the apostolic see in England, Scotland and Ireland. Faculty to him, who has been collector in England, Scotland and Ireland for several years, and whom the pope has appointed as nuncio and collector in the same [below, Reg. CCCLXXXI, ff. 86 sqq.], to dispense fifteen persons of the said realms and island, on account of illegitimacy as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, or of a priest and an unmarried woman, or of an unmarried man and a married woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure. May anno 13 Martin V, i.e. 1430), is in the hand of De Prètism, ‘Eugenii IV. de Curia. Anno i, ii. Libro (sic) xii. Tom. xvi.’ On another parchment flyleaf, which formed the original cover, is the hardly legible contemporary description: ‘Registrum … de curia … Eugenii pape quarti de anno primo et secundo,’ after which come the contemporary rubrice headed ‘Sequntur rubrice primi libri bullar um sanctissimi domini nostri Eugenii pape quarti de anno primo et secundo.’
