Annulment etc. as below. Martin V, upon learning that at the instigation of John, bishop of Glasgow, then chancellor of the realm of Scotland, and other prelates and clerks of the council of James, king of Scots, divers ordinances and statutes had been put forth to the manifest hurt of ecclesiastical liberty and the derogation of the authority of the apostolic see, gave commission [Cal. Lett. VII, p. 18] to Jordan, bishop [now] of Sabina, then of Albano, and Peter, [now] bishop of Albano, then cardinal priest of St. Stephen's on the Cœlian, to cite the said bishop to appear before them in person and make answer; gave commission, after the citation had been duly decreed by the said bishops Jordan and Peter, to William Croyser, archdeacon of Teviotdale, a member of the household and acolyte of the present pope, to execute it; and for that purpose sent him to divers parts as his nuncio and as nuncio of the apostolic see, as well as for other business concerning the Roman church, exempting him as regarded his benefices (ipsumque ad beneficia sua) from all jurisdiction etc. of any ordinaries, etc., and taking the same under the protection of himself and the said see, etc. [see below, Reg. Lat. CCCII, f. 298]. The said William, after duly executing the said citation, lawfully reproduced it before the said bishop Jordan (fn. 2) and Lewis, cardinal priest of St. Cecilia's (who had been substituted for the said bishop Peter, then absent from the Roman court), on account of which the said John and other prelates and clerks provoked the indignation of the said king against William, who being then at the said see and under its protection, was cited by letters of the said king to appear in the then forthcoming parliament to hear himself declared a traitor, all those of the said realm who were at the said see being forbidden, under penalty, to have dealings with him, as the king's enemy. Subsequently the said king sequestrated all the fruits etc. of William's benefices, and forbade his proctors to send him aught, until he should appear in the king's presence. Finally the king, by his letters and in his council, declared William a traitor and renewed the sequestration, the same being subsequently published in the said [Roman] court, wherefore William has appealed to the apostolic see and has petitioned the pope for a remedy. The pope annuls hereby the said royal letters, and all proceedings taken by the king or by his order or by any others, the said publications in the said court or without it, sentences of treason etc., sequestrations etc., restores William to his estate etc. as before the said commission was delivered to him, restores him to his benefices and the fruits etc. thereof, orders those who have taken the said fruits etc. to make restitution etc., under pain of excommunication (from which none but the pope shall be able to absolve, except in the hour of death), suspension, deprivation etc., 10,000 nobles of English money, and perpetual disability. Reg. CCCLXVI, f. 148) to Scotland, promised at Bruges, in 1435, indiction 13, anno 5, to pay for the expenses of whatsoever nuncio the pope should send, as is contained in an instrument of Ivo Tanguidi, of the diocese of Tréguier (Trecoren.), notary public.
