(f. 50.)		 To William Turnbule, dean of Moray, M.A., member of the pope's household. Collation and provision to him (whom the pope has sent to king James on business of the pope and the Roman church, and who has therefore undergone much labour and expense, who is a chamberlain of the pope, a bachelor of canon law, and the said king's proctor in the Roman court, and who is related to divers barons in the third and fourth degrees of kindred) of the said deanery, a major elective dignity with cure, value not exceeding 70l. sterling, void and reserved to the pope, under his late general reservation of all major cathedral dignities, void and to be void, by the death of Walter Stewart; notwithstanding that he holds the parish church of Haroyk (rectius Hawyk) in the diocese of Glasgow, value not exceeding 60l. sterling, and has in virtue of letters of the present pope, (making provision to him of a canonry of Glasgow and another of Aberdeen, with reservation of as many prebends therein and of a dignity etc., with or without cure, of one of them, and dispensing him to hold for three years such dignity etc. and the said parish church) accepted and caused provision to be made to him of certain canonries and prebends of Glasgow and Aberdeen, value not exceeding 60l. and 30l. sterling respectively. He is hereby dispensed to hold together, also for three years, the said parish church and deanery, upon obtaining possession of which, in virtue of these presents, the said other letters shall be null as far as regards a dignity etc. with cure. Mandate—the pope having been informed by Odo Omartayn, scholar, of the diocese of Elphin, that Nicholas Maceochaidykellaid, canon of Elphin, has dilapidated his canonry and prebend, called the rectory of Killbridi, and is defamed (notatus) of divers other crimes and excesses—if Odo will accuse Nicholas before him, to summon Nicholas and if he find the preceding, or enough thereof to be true, to deprive him, and in that event to collate and assign the said canonry and prebend, value not exceeding 4 marks, after he has been tonsured, to Odo, who is the son of a priest, professed of the order of St. Augustine, and an unmarried woman, and whom the pope hereby specially dispenses, on account of the said defect, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold the said canonry and prebend. Mandate to collate and assign to Thady (Thatheue) Oduyud, priest, of the diocese of Killala, who has studied at Bologna, the canonry of Killala and the prebend called Rosserck or the chancellorship therein, value not exceeding 2 marks, void because Thomas Macmicrobut alias de Dundonayll contracted marriage per verba legitime de presenti, and also the perpetual vicarage of Crosymulina in the said diocese, value not exceeding 5 marks, void because Odo Obruachan held it for more than a year without being ordained priest, summoning and removing the said Thomas and Odo, who have unduly continued to detain possession for more than eight years, and from fear of whose power Thady has no hope of obtaining justice in the city and diocese of Killala. Mandate to collate and assign to John Mey, perpetual vicar of St. Patrick's, Stamoling, in the diocese of Meath, I.U.B., the rectory of St. Mary's, Paynyston Dulard by Ardmolchan, in the said diocese, value not exceeding 34 marks, so long void by the death of Robert Mey that its collation lapsed to the apostolic see, summoning and removing John Whyt alias Brugan, priest, of the said diocese, who has for about seven years unduly detained possession under pretext of a collation made to him by authority of the ordinary, when under a sentence of the greater excommunication and publicly proclaimed excommunicate, whether it be void as above, or by the resignation of John Styliford, or in any other way; notwithstanding that he holds the said vicarage, value not exceeding 20 marks, which he is to resign upon obtaining under these presents the said rectory. A flyleaf has the following contemporary notes: ’Primus de dignitatibus vacantibus et prebendis vacantibus ac plenaria remissione anno [iiiito, the leaf is injured at the top corner] Eugenii pape iiiiti ’ (a similar description occurring on the bottom edge of the volume), ‘Daniel’ and ‘Rubricatus per me Danielem Tries, clericum Barchinonen., in artibus et in utroque jure bacallarium, die x mensis Marcii Anno 1435.’
  • 2. On f. 301d is an indult, addressed ‘Carissimo in Christo filio Jacobo Regi Illustri,’ and dated at Florence, 1434, 7 Kal. Sept. anno 4, for the confessor of his choice to grant him plenary indulgence once in life and once only in the hour of death. The king James in question is evidently James II de Bourbon, comte de la Marche, husband of Joan II. queen of Naples (as above, p. 148 note), who died a Friar Minor in 1438.
