56. Governor Lionel Copley and the Council of Maryland to the Lords of Trade and Plantations. We have already given an account of the behaviour of Sir Thomas Lawrence and Mr. Randolph, two officers of note. Many people here are of the same dye, and are averse to the present government at home; sometimes at their cabals they openly declare their desire for a change. Persons of the best rank are tainted, even the Lieutenant Governor, 'Esquire Nicholson', who associates with men of this sort, who only await a favourable opportunity to carry out their designs. The neighbouring governments are thought to be similarly inclined. We pray that such persons may be removed. [Copy]. 1½ p. [C.O. 5/718 f.96]
