The King to the Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge. Complaint is made by his printers of great injury done them by those of Cambridge, in printing the New Testament against Orders of Council in 1623 and 1629, not authorizing their printing the Testament alone, and restraining them from printing the Bible except in quarto and folio. He is to order them to forbear so doing in future, on pain of His Majesty's high displeasure and just punishment. [Ent. Book 3, p. 73.]

Wants an order to recover money from the King of Portugal, on the Queen's dowry, for furnishing the ships with provisions, &c., the merchants in London have expressly ordered their agents to give no moneys for bills on the Treasurer of the Navy, as they cannot obtain pay; begs that such bills may be satisfied, or the service will be greatly dishonoured. He has been almost three months in close confinement, with nothing charged or proved against him; is confident that he has done nothing against His Majesty or the kingdom's peace, since the Act of Grace.

32. Lord Chancellor Clarendon to Lord Newport. The King consents for Major Salway to be set at liberty, as there is no information against him; several persons of unquestionable integrity give security for him, and he has entered obligations for his peaceable demeanour. He will not only have no hand in disturbances, but will prevent or discover them. Commends him for protection and countenance, that he may not be disquieted for past memories. [Copy.]

33. Petition of Sir John Mennes, governor of Walmer Castle, co. Kent, to the King, that upwards of 70l. due by him to the Exchequer, as the moiety of the forfeitures on transportations of wool seized by him, may be remitted, on consideration of his having expended 80l. in repairs of the castle. With reference thereon to the Lord Treasurer, and his report, that a particular account should first be required of the disbursements about the castle. [Adm. Paper.]

The King to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of London, and Justices of Peace within the precincts of the bills of mortality. The return of the number of hearths in the said precincts shows either great negligence or deceit, and is in danger of bringing both constable and owner under the penalties of the Act of Parliament; advises them to re-examine the returns, and each in his own jurisdiction to adopt such a course as will prevent deceitful or negligent returns. Will bear the charge of two or three honest persons in each ward, if required, to join the constable in an ocular view. As this course will be held in other places, begins with London, lest the ill example of the City have an ill influence over all the kingdom. Requests speedy execution of orders, this branch of revenue being that by which the charge of government is to be chiefly supported. [Ent. Book 3, p. 75.]

Declaration by the King of his pleasure that the French Walloons and other foreign Protestants, who have long resided at Thorney, Isle of Ely, be permitted to exercise their religion and discipline in the French tongue in Thorney Church, as heretofore, and to choose their own ministers and officers, under approval of William Earl of Bedford, to whom Thorney belongs, and of the bishop of the diocese. The author of the scandalous libels against himself and the officers, written to beget a revolt in the garrison, has been miraculously discovered, by the stoppage of a letter which the writer was sending to England. There were two brothers; one has confessed; the other, an old levelling rogue, denied all and was hanged. They are not yet purged of sectaries. Begs that none may come from England without a pass, or Dunkirk will become a den of thieves. Sends a letter for the King.

54. Claude (?) to the Governor of Dunkirk. News from Spain is that the Queen is received in again, with great pomp and joy. Caracena has left Brussels, and it is said he will be recalled from the government, on account of complaints against him in Spain. Fairfax left London in disgust; he was sent after but could not be taken. Ignatius White, who is at the Brussels Court, is thought to be a spy, and is said to be gone for England, to see a sick brother at Rochester, or for some other cause disadvantageous to the King. Another reduction of troops is expected there.

Aug. 17. The King to the High Sheriff or Under Sheriff of Norfolk. Of the eight persons condemned at the late Norwich assizes, but reprieved till Aug. 23, the law is to pass on those condemned for burglary, but the rest may be transported to Jamaica, if any person will give sufficient security for their transport, and for their not returning. 56. Dr. Ralph Cudworth to Sec. Nicholas. Having had two letters recommendatory from the King for a vacant Fellowship, they have chosen the person who was of the college, and capable by statute, the other being a stranger. They have obeyed three letters for Fellowships, for Mr. Smith and Drs. Abney and Carr, but hope such persons only will be recommended as are devoted to the Church, and agreeable to the statutes.

Found on his restoration the stores of the navy so dangerously small, that he appropriated out of 1,200,000l. granted by Parliament, 432,000l. to them, and for the ordnance stores—an appendix to the navy—120,000l.: 144,000l. of this money being already expended, and all affairs with neighbours peaceful, wishes part of the rest to be used in paying off the fleet, which much increases the charges. Wants estimates of the sums due to vessels returned or now called home. Assignations are to be made on the sums due at Christmas next, to any who will advance moneys for this object, those due at Michaelmas being already engaged; but as the sum for navy stores, though thus deferred, is not to be diminished, the sums so expended are to be supplied by assignations on the Customs, Excise, or Chimney money. The timber cannot be delivered, because Mr. Halke, customer at Chichester, stayed the hoy for cocquet fees and Dover duty; told him this was without precedent, the goods being the King's, but he said it was his duty, and others had been negligent. Of the 1,830l. 9s. 11d. due to the officers, clerks, &c., 1,362l. 2s. 7d. is assigned, and only 457l. 7s. 4d. left to be paid out of the 10,000l. assigned to them.
