July 1671

July 12. Sir William Doyly to Auditor Aldworth. I have paid Mr. Fillingham for the office at St. Helen's 780l. since the first state of his account and he has accounted to me for 375l. salary due to me 17 May last, and I know all the rest of his account ordered to be presented to you to be true. [S.P. Supplementary 135, No. 47.]
[July ?] Major Crosio, an Italian, to the King. He has all his life desired to withdraw to England and end his days there but did not dare to hazard his fortunes in a country where there are so many men illustrious in war and graced with the rarest qualities and gifts of nature and art, which obliged him to try his fortune in Germany. To-day necessity has reduced him to a condition where he can go neither forward nor backward, he yields to fortune and determines to lay his bones in the famous city of London. His Majesty can delay his decease by some little help of which he does not despair. His hand will endeavour to write his praises and make his memory eternal. (On the back are some notes about sending 12 horses to Petersfield, see Cal. S.P. Dom., 1671, p. 376, under 9 July.) [French. S.P. Dom., Car. II. 441, No. 80.]
