April 1. 1. William Herlle to Burghley. The examination of Mr. Chillester on the interrogatories. Chillester is a dangerous fellow, but from whom much information might be gained if skilfully handled.
April 4.

2. Henry Wriothesley Earl of Southampton to same. Hopes that through his favour he may be able to obtain the Queen's good will. Denies the charges of misconduct during his imprisonment. Requests to be restored shortly to his liberty and Her Majesty's favour.
April 10. 3. Dean Alex. Nowell to same. Desires authority (to be antedated) for having administered the Communion to the Duke of Norfolk, at Easter last. Requests to know if to-morrow is appointed for his execution.
April 10. 4 John Welshe, "pauperrimus," to Lord Burghley. Prays for his interest to be admitted a scholar in Trinity College, Camb. Lat.

April 18. 12. Justices of the Holland Division, co. Lincoln, to the Council. Have kept strict search for all rogues and vagabonds and such as eat meat on fast-days; and intend monthly to observe the same.

April 19. 14. William Meadley to Burghley. Detail of transactions between himself, Sir Tho. Smith, Sir Humfrey Gilbert, and Lady Mountjoy, relative to establishing copperas, copper, and alum works, and for transmuting iron into copper with vitriol.
April 19. 15. Indenture between Queen Elizabeth and John Lonyson on his appointment to the office of Master Worker of the Mint; with observations on the effect of the articles of the same.

18. George Lamplughe to the Earl of Leicester and Lord Burghley. Intelligence of a foreign ship seen off the coast, supposed to be a pirate, or a ship from France to give intelligence to the friends of the Earls of Northumberland and Westmoreland and the Dacres. Explains his taking an inventory of certain goods belonging to the Duke of Norfolk.

19. Sir Gilb. Gerrard and Tho. Bromley, the Att. and Sol. General, to Burghley. Opinion of the Judges touching Mr. Bertie's claim to the Barony of Willoughby in right of his wife.
April 23. 20. Dr. Whitgyfte to same. Acquaints him that there is no statute directing the service to be sung in Trinity College, Cambridge. No one can prove any crime against him either in doctrine or conversation.
April 23. 21. Justices of Middlesex for the Hundred of Ossulton to the Council. Have appointed searchers to detect all persons eating or dressing flesh on fast-days, and have arrested and punished a number of rogues and vagabonds.

23. Richard Pate to Burghley. Complains of sinister means used to prevent him in his election for Parliament, being Recorder of the City.

24. Sir Tho. Gresham to same. Requests Mr. Serjeant Manwood may not be appointed Judge, as there were others of more ancient standing. Urges the removal of Lady Mary Grey, seeing that Mr. Stokes is now married.

25. Lord Henry Howard to same. Laments the renewed strictness of his imprisonment. Prays Burghley to obtain permission from the Queen that he may be restored to liberty. Would rather have an open imprisonment in the Fleet than the close keeping in the Archbishop's Palace.

26. James Lord Mountjoy to Leicester and Burghley. Progress in the alum works. Wishes to know their pleasure as to the house his wife and children have an interest in.

27. The Justices of Buckingham to the Council. Have strictly obeyed their orders for the observance of fast-days. Inclosing,
