August 1577

Aug. 8.
Richmond.
30. Edw. Cheke to his cousin, Wm. Davison, the Queen's ambassador in the Low Countries. I am forwarding my Lord [Archbishop of Canterbury]'s business, and am promised by Lord Leicester and Mr. Hatton that it shall take place, and then I will join you with all speed. The Queen's trouble with Low Country matters, and relieving the Protestants in France has hindered it. We hear that the citadel is yielded to the States, and many of Don John's side put to the sword, so it is hoped the Prince of Orange and States will grow strong. Sir Jerome Bowes and my cousin George Scott are banished Court for a slanderous speech of my Lord of Leicester. The Court will stay at Richmond 12 days, and there will be no progress.
Let me hear of your safe arrival, and how I may fitliest come. [2/3 page.]
Aug. 9.
Newcastle.
31. Hen. Brandling, mayor, and eight aldermen of Newcastle-uponTyne, to Council. Last June, Thomas Whitehead, messenger of the Chamber, repaired to us with your warrant for apprehension of John Hall of this town; but although we then made diligent search, we could not find him. As we have since apprehended him, we desire to know what we are to do with him. [¾ page.]

32. Request of Rich. Cottle to Lord [Burghley] to re-examine the matter between him and Stephen Browne of Lydd and Benjamin Martin of Rye, concerning the six or seven packs of wool stayed by Cottle in Browne's barn at Lydd, and justified by Martin's men, Robt. Leades and Anth. Harris of Romney, as being brought to the water for transportation. On the night of the 19th August there were certain wools shipped away between Romney and Lydd, supposed for transportation, which Godfrey of Lydd and Anth. Harris, John Sharpe, and John Thomas of Romney, and others know something about. [1 page.]
