The provisions supplied were short and not good; has received enough for 14 days from the Eastland Merchant to make up deficiencies. Is in great want of boatswains' and carpenters' stores. With note by Thos. Alderne, victualler, 6 June, that the Tulip had all her provisions for four months except some beef and pork, and that they were the same as supplied to the rest of the fleet. 1

June 1 Capt. Willoughby, Portsmouth. Adm. Com. The men sent from the west are millers, bakers, butchers, tailors, and others, who never saw salt water before, whereas he expected able seamen to expedite the business. 5
" " Thos. Scott, Deptford. Navy Comrs The Newcastle frigate has been tallowed but wants victuals. The six frigates building will be ready to launch about October; desires the masts, &c. may be sent down, and money to pay and procure men. 6
" " Capt. Joseph Brewster, Dolphin. " Sends his muster book. Has had a sickly ship, but has not lost a man since going on board 7
" " Capt. James Tarry, Great Charity, Portsmouth. Adm. Com. Will observe the Generals orders to ply on the coast of France as soon as victualled and manned. Hopes they will remember him as in the last engagement he received two shots through his left foot, one in his right leg, one through his left arm, and one through his right hand, which the surgeons think he will lose. 8

" " Christ. Nicolson, Governor of Newcastle. Major Rich. Salwey. Asks a convoy for some ships going upon a second adventure to Hamburg, to obtain pitch, tar, and hemp for the service. Capt. John Wetwang is in harbour, has 15 guns and 60 men, and would willingly go if ordered. 11
[" "] Ellen, Mary, Elizabeth, and Susanna, daughters of the late Capt. Wm. Tatnell of the Fortune. Adm. Com. Petition for an order for payment of the money granted them by Parliament, their father being slain in service against the Dutch. He was so public spirited that he spent large sums in horses and arms for the service, and they have to sell what little they have to keep them alive, and so run into debt. 11a

Tatnell of the Fortune left four daughters, and the 500l. granted them by order of Parliament should be equally divided between them, on majority or marriage; as William Cullen, Mayor of Dover, and Thos. Cullen, jurat there, were appointed overseers of Capt. Tatnell's will, the 500l. should be paid them, to be invested for the children's benefit. 12
" " " " The victuallers have sent the wood, candles, hammocks, &c. required for the fleet. Desire that the business of relieving the sick, wounded and widows may be transferred to the Trinity House, as they are oppressed with more of other business than they can well manage. 13
" " Major Wm. Burton, Yarmouth. Navy Comrs Asks an order to take up a ship for the service, and to purchase some tar. Has bought a parcel of Spanish iron at 19l. 7s. 6d. per ton, and paid the Excise. A laden victualler will be ready to sail to-morrow. The water barks have returned from delivering water to the fleet; will despatch them again with all speed. 14
June 3 Capt. Wm. Pestell, Leith. Generals of the Fleet. Could not convoy the busses from Aberdeen to Scarborough, as they were not fitted, but left 60 men to man three ships, and with other vessels came to St. Andrew's Bay; will go back to-morrow for the busses, hasten to Hull, ordering in the Falmouth to clean and victual there, and then ply about Flamborough Head. Has sent some packets from Col. Lilburne. [1 page.] 14a
" 4 Capt. John Sherwin, Princess, Liverpool. Navy Comrs While plying on the western coast, took a pirate, and left her in the custody of the Governor of Cork. Has order from the Generals and Lord General Fleetwood to go into Portsmouth, to tallow and victual, and will then convoy a vessel with ammunition for Dublin. 15
" " Capt. Fras. Allen, Recovery frigate, Leith Road. " Particulars of ships convoyed between the Humber and the east coast of Scotland. Is waiting orders. 16
" " Capt. Robert Clarke, Poplar. " Has received orders to go to Chatham, and as he has been out 26 months, and not received any of his wages, sends his brother for a ticket or bill for them. 17
" " Major N. Bourne, Recovery, Lee Road. Commander of the Thomas Bonadventure. To transfer his crew to Capt. Jas. Bamford, and give them tickets for their wages 18
" 5 Capt. Luke Lightfoot, Dragon, Harwich. Navy Comrs Sends two muster books of the Dragon. Two others were sent by Mr. Poortmans, the General's clerk. The Dragon and Tiger have come in to wash and tallow. Wants masts, one being shot through in the engagement in February, and the other in June. Is weakly manned, having had above 50 men killed and wounded in the Feb. engagement. Parted from the fleet last Sunday, 10 leagues off the Norfolk coast. 19

" " John Scott, Yarmouth. " Asks whether he may press men on board ships, and what allowance or provision he is to make them. The bailiffs had a warrant for men which they were to send up to Chatham, but they can get none, as they have all been already taken out of the town. 21
" " Capt. Elias Drew, Ayr " Has been to Galway and convoyed the ships, and has now received warrant from Col. Alured to clear this coast of small pirates, and then to go to Chester, to convoy some vessels laden with provisions to Ayr. Asks further orders at Chester. 22
" " Major N. Bourne, Lee Road. Navy Comrs Four ships laden with hemp, deals, tar, &c. have been sent in by the Generals; has ordered them up the river. Desires they will use all means for procuring hammocks for the fleet, and a good quantity of clothes. 23

June 5 Capt. John Taylor, Chatham. Adm. Com. Capt. Dakings, commander of the Worcester, has been ordered to Chatham, to have a new foremast, tallow, and revictual. Mr. Pett having gone to the fleet, will do his utmost to forward the other ships. The Westergate and Half Moon are ready to take in the victuals when they arrive. 25
" " Capt. John Tarrant, John and Katherine, Harwich. Navy Comrs Had 202 men on board, which are not yet all disposed of in the fleet, but when they are, will send a muster book. Has lost one of his anchors, with 14 fathoms of rope, through falling foul of some wreck. 26
" " Major N. Bourne, Recovery, Lee Road. Adm. Com. The Recovery and six others are ready to sail, but are waiting for the water hoys and victuallers; there is a great want of hammocks for the fleet. With note that they are despatched. 27
" 6 Capt. Geo. Daking, Worcester, Chatham. Navy Comrs Desires order to wash and tallow, and to hasten down the provisions, of which he sends an account. Has sent his gunner to the Ordnance officers, with another account of his wants, which he hopes they will further. 28
" " Adm. Com., Whitehall. " Desire that the masts and rigging for the fleet may be instantly sent down to Major Bourne in Lee Road, as they have received letters from the Generals of the defective state of the ships for want of them. 29

June 6 John Rushworth Certificate that William Bexbey, master of the Mary and Ann of Aldborough, who wants employment, served the State in carrying provisions to the army in Scotland in 1650, and was at the taking of Edinburgh and Leith; had his ship seized upon in the Sound by the King of Denmark was taken prisoner by the Hollanders, and is well affected. 38
" " Navy Comrs. Adm. Com. Have given order for the discharge of Wm. Prouse, messenger, and Geo. Newsum, doorkeeper, for their disorderly lives, and recommend Hugh Erington and Wm. Harrison to succeed them, Errington as messenger at the salary increased to 50l. a year, and Harrison as doorkeeper at 40l. With approval and appointment by the Admiralty Committee, 14 June. 39,40

" Has taken a ship of 400 tons laden with wine, salt, &c. with two passes on board that she should go for France, and from thence to Scotland, and lade salt and coals, and then sail for Emden, though she says she was bound for Dantzic; found a bill of lading for Holland, and most of the company are Hollanders. Has left the prize at Plymouth, and sent the papers up to the Prize Office, is now going to take in the money for Scilly, and then attend Capt. Mill, for transporting the pressed men and furnishing the ships with them. 46
" " Geo. Pley, Weymouth Major Wm. Harding, near Bride's church by Fleet Conduit, London. Stephen Chambers says Laurence Deborex is still a prisoner in Plymouth Castle. The frigate was taken by the Gainsborow before they departed for Newfoundland. Asks him to speak to Capt. Hatsell for the man's release. 47
June 7 Navy Comrs. Adm. Com. On the petition of Sarah relict of Edw. Fox, quartermaster's mate in the Assistance, slain in the engagement with the Dutch on 18 February, they have granted her 7l. for the present relief of herself and child, recommend 10l. more. 48
" 8 " " Considered the petition of John Best, late master of the Sampson, but have only power without their order to relieve the wounded by the help of the chest. As his case is extraordinary, 50l. should be bestowed upon him, and he maintained in Sutton's Hospital. With note of grant. 49
" " " " Have granted 8l. to Barbara, relict of John Hamond, late midshipman of the Assurance, slain in the engagement on 18 February, for relief of herself and two children, and think 20l. more ought to be given her. 50

Navy Comrs A survey has been returned into the registry office for sale of the late King, Queen, and Princes' lands at Worcester House, Strand, of several parcels of land at Chatham, with a tenement in the possession of Thomas Wood, discovered by Thos. Barington, and desired to be purchased by Capt. Thos. French, but as the contractors do not know whether they are used for the service of the navy, they have suspended the sale until they hear from them. 53
" " Capt. Wm. Wildey, Ratcliffe. Adm. Com. Was at the Tower yesterday, ordering the men on board the water-ships and victuallers going to the Lee Road, and will send the ships away with speed. 54

" Will do his utmost, according to their order, if any wounded men come to Yarmouth, and has sent a copy to the Mayor of Harwich, with instructions to draw what he disburses therein on the Treasurer of the Navy. Five of the State's ships have come into the roads from the Thames, and the Scout-master General has sent to Capt. Bamford for a convoy for a vessel with ammunition to the fleet. 55

Hutchinson Has drawn a bill on him for 300l. on account of 300 Dutch prisoners, and desires he will procure speedy payment, as being only a clothier, his trade much obstructed, and many workpeople depending upon him, he will otherwise be considerably out of purse. 58

" " Major William Burton, Yarmouth. Navy Comrs Has offered the merchants 30s. per cwt. for the hemp; the smiths will not work the iron into anchors under 13s. per cwt. Will furnish the fleet with masts, &c. if they come into the roads. There are some victualling and water ships staying for orders. Does not know what they mean by having no power to dispose of prizes before they are condemned. The Generals are glad so much care was taken for supplying them with water. 61

June 10 Capt. Math. Alured, Ayr. [Sam.] Windis, victualler, Liverpool. Has sent the Swan frigate to be victualled, as she is appointed for holding intelligence between Ireland and Ayr. Desires despatch, as there is not a man-of-war on the coast, which is infested with pickeroons, and vessels are continually coming from and returning to Ireland. 71

June 11 Capt. John Taylor Adm. Com. Cannot find any vessels in the river more fit for scouts to carry and bring back intelligence at sea than two of the prize pinks at Chatham. Recommends Capt. Cook for the command of one of them, having employed him and found him a good coaster. 83

Clark with his convoys to their rendezvous in the Swinn. Desires they will send down the soldiers for the ships, especially the 40 for the Reserve. 85
