" " Capt. Wm. Coppen, Adam and Eve, Gravesend. " Is detained for want of men and there are none to press. Desires the surgeon and carpenter may be hastened down, and when he has procured sufficient men, will sail with all speed. 2
" " Jo. Brewster, Dolphin at sea. " Sends the muster books. Did not lose any men in the engagement on 2 and 3 June, nor had any sufficiently wounded to send them on shore, but since then has had 26 ill with the scurvy. 3

" 2 John Arthur, Weymouth. Navy Comrs Sends his account of the press, as also receipts of the masters of the scout vessels for 37l. " 4 Capt. Wm. Partridge, Wildman, Downs. Navy Comrs Desires the powder and gunners' stores may be hastened from the Tower; when the 7 men arrive from Dover, will put to sea. 11
" " Thos. Scott, Deptford. " It seems strange that the Foresight at Woolwich, having a captain, master pilot in ordinary, and master's mate, should stay for an extra pilot to carry her to Tilbury Hope. Is going to Woolwich to survey the Elias prize and hasten her away. The Pearl will sail to-day. There is a small attendance of seamen. 12
July 4 John Morris, Gravesend. Navy Comrs The Mary prize has come up from Chatham to the Hope, but wants a steward. She was without provisions; has given a warrant to the clerk of the check for sufficient for 54 men. Asks whether to do the like, with other ships in like condition; the Yarmouth pink is ordered out; 4 or 5 seamen have requested to be conveyed to the fleet by the ships with ammunition, but the masters will not take them. 13
" " John Bamford, Unicorn, Sole Bay. " Sends muster book of the Unicorn, being employed by the admirals and Capt. Strong as clerk of the check, the place being void. 14

" " Ordnance officers Navy Comrs As the officers at Chatham refuse to supply any more ships with junk, and as there is none in the stores, they will be unfurnished, unless order is given to proceed as formerly. 22
" " Capt. Peter Strong, Unicorn, Sole Bay. " Desires if the money allowed for the sick and wounded has been paid to Mr. Odway, formerly his clerk of the check, that it may be converted into necessaries to be sent to the ship. 23

July 5 Thos. Smith, Deptford. Navy Comrs Has been to Woolwich and encloses a list of the ships he has sent out. As the tar was wasting in the yard by the heat of the sun, has hired a room for it of Capt. Hosier for 10s. a week and taken it for a year. It is by the water side and is 60 feet by 20. The nonpayment of the tickets to seamen who have ventured their lives in the service has caused much discontent; gave them to understand who was the cause of it. Thinks it is carnal policy. The Pearl will sail to night. 28
" " Capt. Joshua Wilson, Victory. " Sends two muster books, being the 4th since sailing from Queenborough 29
" " Capt. Philip Gethings, Mathias, Chatham. " Asks a warrant for his surgeon, that he may get his chest provided, also the sending down of what seamen can be procured, as he is hastening the fitting out, and will soon be ready to sail. 30
" " Com. Peter Pett, Chatham. " The Marigold will sail to-morrow for the Hope, where she ought to be paid. The Gillyflower and Westergun are ready; the victuals ought to be sent down, as the rest of the ships will not be long behind. " " Capt. Philip Gethings, Mathias. Major Salwey. Mr. Pearse, appointed master of the Mathias, has arrived from Deal, and desires his warrant, as the ship is ready to sail. Has had trouble to keep his men together. Commissioner Pett has gone to the Generals at Sole Bay. 37
" " John Wyles, clerk of the check, Mermaid, Harwich. [Navy Comrs.] Sends 2 muster books and desires one may be sent to the Treasury Office. Will in future send one monthly. 38
" " Wm. Beale and Thos. Alderne, Victualling Office. Adm. Com. Fear there will be some confusion in the distribution of the victuals amongst the fleet, unless an able person is immediately appointed in the place of Mr. Blundell, the general purser, lately deceased. Have 5 pursers on the place; propose either John Petty and Wm. Addis to succeed him. If the provisions required by Capt. Limbrey are for the fleet, they have already been ordered to be supplied from Ipswich and those parts, and to be sent to Sole Bay. Particulars of 300 tons sent by victualling ships named. 39

Has been compelled to set some new masts, as she was much damaged in the engagement last June. Had 24 yards of canvas from the James. Took 3 prizes off the Fly on the 23rd ult. Had 4 brass guns from the Duchess, and gave two iron ones in return. 41
" 7 Wm. Gurner, Robt. Bullock, and Chas. Stamford, Barber Surgeons' Hall. Certificate that the Master and wardens have appointed Thos. Harding, Daniel Sneaton, Thomas Hastler, and Isaac Smythyes, surgeons to the fleet. 42
" " Capt. Wm. Wildeys, Ratcliff. Adm. Com. The Newcastle frigate is appointed to convoy the ships with ammunition in the Hope to the fleet, but she has been detained for want of a wind. Will go to Gravesend and despatch the Pelican and Mary prize; the Pearl has fallen down to Blackwall. 43
" " " " Gravesend. " Has been on board the Pelican, which cannot sail as she wants provisions and men, but will take some men out of the Anne and Pearcey. The King David is in the Hope with the vessels laden with powder and shot, and others bound for the fleet; will send them to Sole Bay under convoy of the Newcastle. The want of water casks and getting the men on board, is a great hindrance. There are no soldiers on board any of the ships. 44
" " " " Navy Comrs To the same effect. The 10 ton of junk from Deptford has been shipped for the fleet 45

" " " " Have conferred with the victuallers about an expeditious supply of beer for the fleet; they hope the defects will not prove so great as the complaints. The many ships to be despatched hinders them from effecting what they desire, and what may be thought necessary for the fleet. 48
" 8 John Morris, Gravesend. Navy Comrs Asks whether to provide necessaries for sick men sent on shore; want of clothes has caused the distemper of many, as they were pressed and sent on board without any; there are upwards of 40 of them in several places, and many more daily expected. 49
" " Thomas Wright, Heartsease, Lee Road. " Asks orders, having come with the Crescent, 7 Brothers, and Duchess, with several prizes by order from the Generals of the fleet. 50

" " Capt. Jas. Cary, Great Charity, Spithead. Navy Comrs Has come in with the Raven, as the beer stinks, which has caused many of the men to fall sick and others to run, and the butter and other provisions are as bad as they can be. Desires order to the victuallers for a fresh supply, as he has to convoy some ships to the Downs. 59
