68. Certificate of the Commissions of Sewers that the salt marshes near Rye Harbour might be regained from the sea without prejudice to the haven, leaving a fifth part to be discharged by a sluice for cleansing the harbour.
Oct. 3. Grant to Robt. Thorne of the office of taking Affidavits in the Court of the Marches of Wales, for life. [Grant Bk., p. 119.]

Oct. 6. 69. [Justices of Peace ?] of Cornwall to Rich. Carnsew, Treasurer of the eastern division of the county. To pay from the county stock for maimed soldiers, 40s. to Thos. Jones, hurt in the service in Ireland, in lieu of any future yearly payment. Annexed are,

86. Chamberlain to Carleton. Sir Thos. Overbury dead, and buried in the Tower. The manner of his death is not known. The corpse was very offensive. Nobody pities him, and his own friends do not speak well of him. Dr. Abbot was likely to be made a Bishop, but his brother, the Archbp. of Canterbury, has lost some favour about the great [divorce] business. The marriage between the Earl of Essex and Lady Fras. Howard dissolved. Particulars of the settlement by the King of the quarrel between the Earl [of Essex] and Hen. Howard. Lord Coke hesitates to leave the Chief Justiceship of the Common Pleas and accept that of the King's Bench, which is urged on him by the King, who wishes to make Sir Fras. Bacon Attorney. Yelverton spoken of as Solicitor, because of his services to the King in Parliament. Death of Lord Petre and of Sir John Brograve, Attorney of the Duchy, who is succeeded by Moseley. Sir Ralph Winwood and Sir Hen. Neville despair of the Secretaryship, which is likely to fall on Sir Thos. Lake. Lord Rochester pays 20,000l. for lands belonging to the Dacres and Nevills in Westmoreland, and is to be made Earl of Westmoreland.
Oct. 19. Grant to Thos. Fitz-Hughes and Roger Pennell of the moiety of moneys raised on composition for defective titles, for two years. [Grant Bk., p. 112.]

87. Giov. Franc. Brondi to [Carleton]. Has spent a month at St. Edmundsbury, and would much like to reside there. Sir Hen. Wotton follows the Court, by command of the King. There has been a long discussion on the embassies to France and Spain. It is expected that Wotton will be sent to one place or the other. Italian.

Grant to John Sandiland, Groom of the Bedchamber to the late Prince, of a pension of 200l. per ann. [Sign Man., vol. III., No. 63.]
Oct. 22. Commission to Lord Chancellor Ellesmere, Hen. Earl of Northampton, and others, to allow to Robt. Typper, his executors and assignees, due reward for his services in the commission for sale of lands, with authority to draw out warrants for lands not yet granted. [Grant Bk., p. 103.]

89. Chamberlain to Carleton. Sir Ralph Winwood intends to press for his despatch [to Holland], lest it be supposed that he is lingering after the Secretaryship. Sir Hen. Neville is now quite fallen, and it is thought that Sir Thos. Lake will hold the place, but without the title, under Rochester, who is made Treasurer of Scotland. Sir Edw. Coke called up to the Chief Justiceship of the King's Bench, to his own regret, and that of all the officers of Common Pleas. Sir Fras. Bacon made Attorney General; it is feared he will prove a dangerous instrument. A Spanish match talked of. Reception of an Ambassador from the new Emperor of Muscovy, whose election is likely to be questioned. The Muscovy Company resolve to defend by force the whale fishing in Greenland, which they discovered a few years ago, from the Hollanders, who have sent deputies about it. The Spaniards threaten to drive the English from the Bermudas. A piece of amber as big as a giant found there. The East India vessels returned, richly laden. Dr. Carrier, the King's Chaplain, is turned Papist, and more are likely to follow, so many priests and Jesuits arriving and passing unpunished. Sir Thos. Edmondes likely to be Secretary under Rochester. Proclamation by the King himself on the late quarrel between the Earl of Essex and Hen. Howard.

90. Sir Thos. Hamilton to Rochester. The note commanding his Lordship's admission to the [Scottish] Council was readily obeyed. Discontents at Sir Gideon [Murray's] promotion. Lord Roxburgh will try to prove his complaint against his unnatural kinsman. All the King's wishes not likely to be accomplished, as people do not choose to do and undo at pleasure. Incloses,
90. i. Transactions of the Council of Scotland. Visct. Rochester admitted of their number, at the King's command. Geo. Graham, the Earl of Monteith's uncle, sentenced to the horn, for sending a challenge to a duel. The clan Gregor to be summoned to make their lands peaceable, and the heads of two of their offenders to be sent and set upon the west post of Edinburgh, &c., &c., Oct. 27.

91. Giov. Franc. Biondi to [Carleton]. Albert Morton's going delayed. Will follow Carleton's advice in remaining in London. An Ambassador come from Muscovy to renew the trade, broken off by war. Italian.

92. Earl of Nottingham to the Master and Wardens of the Company of Shipwrights. Requires them to apprehend and bring before their company all persons who refuse to conform to the regulations of their charter, and to imprison them until compliance, they being chiefly poor men and unable to pay a fine.
Oct. 31. Grant to Rich. Pitt of the office of Gun-founder for life. [Grant Bk., p. 96.]
Oct. 93. Note of a debt of 718l. 12s. 5d., due to Thos. Woodrove, mercer, for wares delivered for the Queen's use, since Midsummer 1612.
