Howard, and Lord Burly, of Scotland.

76. Sir Wm. Bowyer to Salisbury. Lord Wm. Howard has arrived. Lord Burly came, but refuses to stay, and the Chancellor of Scotland talks of putting another into the Commission in his place. Dares not deliver the Earl of Dunbar's goods to any but the three persons named by the King. Caution against granting any request of the townspeople for the governor's house, &c.
Feb. 10. 77. Sir Hen. Balfour to the Same. Was made ill by the death of the Earl of Dunbar. Is displeased with a man who abused the Council for depriving him of a reward which he expected for service to the late Queen. Would have killed him, but he was an Englishman, and the King dislikes frays between the nations. Solicits a pension payment of his debts, having served the King 15 years.

He favours the inhabitants of Waltham Forest, who petition for exemption from purveyance.

Feb. 18. 91. Examinations of Simon Houghton, Keeper of Newgate, Abraham Reynolds, Margery White, and Christiana Damme, relative to the visits and presents of the Spanish Ambassador and Spanish ladies to the prisoners in Newgate, especially to Roberts the priest.

93. The Same to the Same. Letters to be conveyed to the Bishop Almoner. Mr. Bruncard's petition is countermanded; it was, that the powder and munitions supplied to divers forts and castles in the Queen's time, and unaccounted for, should be given to him. A long stay has taken place in passing grants of recusants' lands, &c., because of projected alterations in the grants. A draft proviso sent for revision.

Nothing is heard of the Swedish gentleman, nor of Sir Rob. Stewart. Answer to be made to the Duke of Saxony. Sir Robt. Carey is chided for thinking 16 horses necessary for the Duke of York.

99. The Same to the Same. The King is resolved that the keeper of Newgate shall be severely punished for allowing reverence to priests, masses in prison, &c. Two prohibitions granted by Lord Chief Justice [Coke] in two cases of the Church, show his perverse spirit, and unless he can assign good reasons for them, the King will dismiss him and no longer be vexed with him. The gentleman of Sweden has just arrived.

Instructions in a case pending before the Judge of the Admiralty. The King would have the Spanish Ambassador's house watched to see who goes to mass, but not openly so as to attract his notice.

The King has chosen the Bishop of London to be Archbishop of Canterbury, as being an able man, and recommended by the late Earl of Dunbar, whose memory is dear to His Majesty. Zouch and others may not obtain a patent of the newly invented furnaces for making glass with sea coal, as it would infringe on the original patent to himself and others, the inventors, which he desires a printed declaration to enforce.

Has established glasshouses in Sussex and London at his own great cost, and to the benefit of the kingdom, relying on a promise that he should have the advantage thereof. Hears that another is likely to have the privilege of making glass, and entreats it may be prevented. French.

115. Sir Thos. Lake to the Same. Lord Chief Justice Coke, in a conversation with the King, denied any knowledge of the two prohibitions [see Feb. 22], but confessed it in private to others. Inquiries are to be made thereon. Mr. Bruncard has been again at Court with his petition formed anew, but the King will not refer it, ordering him to proceed in the case by common law.

116. The Same to the Same. Sir Thos. Bartlett used unseemly and desperate language in preferring petitions to the King for protection and relief. He is sent to the Council to receive admonition. The King would grant him protection rather than be haunted with him again.

Feb. 28. 118. Sir Thos. Shirley to the Same. Reasons why Sir Hen. Fanshaw has awarded process against him and his friends. Requires a warrant from his Lordship to stay the same, &c.
