1. Sir Robt. Stewart to Salisbury. Prays a letter to the Chancellor of Denmark, for his more speedy despatch through Denmark, and to the King of Sweden.

8. Earl of Hertford to the Same. Is glad the rough draft of the letter to his unfortunate grandchild pleased him. Has re-copied it, and sent it open with his seal, for the Lords to read and seal it.

9. Geo. Carleton to Sir Dud. Carleton. Begs his favour for Mr. Joiner, recommended by Sir Mich. Green, who is going to Venice to practise the silk-loom stocking weaving, which is not permitted in England, for fear of ruining the knitters. Mr. Pory would have had the speculation thrown into Sir Dudley's hands, but his friends dared not accept it without consulting him. Will attend to his house at Eton. Thanks for Sir Dudley's care of his son, whose temper it is to be too easily misled. Death of Lady Norris's mother, the Countess of Lincoln.

Holtby, brother to the Jesuit, apprehended and sent to gaol for refusing the Oath of Allegiance. Requests a line of approval to Dethick and Barnes, who have intercepted his letters. Incloses,

13. Alex. Capell to Salisbury. Was apprehended at Canterbury, and committed to prison. Reports proceedings of the seminaries of Douay and St. Omer. Mr. Seymour, husband of Lady Arabella, is well treated by the Archduke, who will not deliver him up. Descriptions of priests and Jesuits passing into England, the disguises which they assume, and the houses they frequent. Some dangerous matter is working.

14. Robt. Jackson to the Same. Thanks for being appointed Commissary to the Musters of the Pensioners at Berwick. Satisfactory manner of the discharge of the garrison by Sir R. Gray and Sir W. Selby, a few old men only craving larger allowance. Those who are to be entirely dropped have not yet received their dismissal.
July 5. 15. Thos. Woodhouse to Salisbury. Beseeches favour in his petition that he and his brother may no longer be compelled to pay the debts of Sir Hen. Gawdy.

16. Sir Ferdinando Gorges, Governor of Plymouth, to the Same. Certain merchants of London are taken off Scilly, by English pirates. Increase of piracy, and necessity for its suppression. Incloses,
16. i. Examination of John Collever and others who have been taken, concerning the number and strength of the pirate fleet. They have in all 40 ships and 2,000 men, and their place of rendezvous is at Marmora, in Barbary.

Confirmation of a contract with Sir Baptist Hicks, Alderman Cockayne, and others, for the sale of the remainder of tithes, rectories, and chantry lands, of the value of 500l. per ann., and for converting 500l. per ann. of rents reserved on former sales to fee simple; and a warrant for passing the remainder of a former bargain to the value of 140l. per ann. of like lands. Warrant dormant to the Treasurer of the Chamber to disburden the Privy Purse of divers payments of late made out of it, pursuant to a Privy Seal of Jan. 5, 1608; viz., to preachers for sermons before the King, gifts by the King for the Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth at christenings, gifts to musicians, &c. 19. John Moray to Salisbury. The King has spoken to his Lordship concerning his release; begs he will favour it. His long imprisonment injures his health; his estate is ruined by prosecuting a grant made him by the King for payment of his debts, for which Lord Haddington and others are sureties. 26. Hen. Earl of Northampton to Visct. Rochester. Examination of [the Earl of Northumberland] on the charges of Elks, his servant. He is much changed, reserved, cautious, and timid in his answers. He confesses now that he did persuade his brother to excuse Thos. Percy's taking the Oath [of Allegiance, as Gentleman Pensioner], but denies the other accusations, and complains of Elks as a discontented rogue. Sir Walter Raleigh examined, but found as bold, proud, and passionate as ever.
July 14. 27. Duke of Lenox to Salisbury. Has left a servant to attend his direction for the money.
July 14. 28. Earl of Salisbury to Sir Ant. Mildmay and Sir Chas. Montague. On their report, is certified of the incompetency of Thos. Lindsell. Authorizes them to remove him from the situation of schoolmaster at Fotheringay, and to appoint Elam, or some other, in his place, as they think fit.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is sworn of the Privy Council. Dr. King elected Bishop of London, &c. The Landgrave of Hesse has been to woo Lady Elizabeth, and the Palatine of the Rhine is coming. Lord Carew gone to Ireland about the Ulster plantation. Earl of Northumberland more closely confined, Elks, a discontented servant, having inculpated him in the powder treason. Sir Walter Raleigh more restrained than before, &c.

33. Tim. Elks to Thos. Lumsden. Remarks and suggestions as to obtaining evidence on four presumptive points against the Earl of Northumberland, in connexion with the gunpowder treason. His taking the house next the Parliament house. Admitting Percy to be Gentleman Pensioner without an oath. His warning to be absent from Parliament; and Percy's speech while the treason was in working. Thinks Whitelock, who was with Percy at Syon the day before, knew something, but was bribed by the Earl to secrecy. [Geo.] Whitehead to be examined.
July 16. 34. Sir Hen. Hobart to Salisbury. Sir Hum. Winch having opportunity to send for the things he has left in Ireland, wishes to know whether the King will use him there or here.
July 16. 35. Thos. Dewhurst to the Same. The house which he holds in Westminster on a lease from the Crown is claimed by the Dean of Westminster as parcel of the college.
July 16 ? 36. John Anthony to the Same. Relative to Jesuits in England and their correspondence abroad. Has good means of information, because the Romanists still suppose him to be one of themselves.

37. Earl of Nottingham to Salisbury. Fears the pardon offered to pirates comes too late to do any good. Strongly opposes the idea of sending out a small force for their suppression, as it can yield only dishonour.

38. Sir Thos. Lake to the Same. The letters from the King of Denmark are about the loan of ships, his war with Sweden, &c. The King refuses to sign the letter to Fitzherbert, saying he will do more harm than Mole good. His Majesty has signed the book of the Great Farm [of the Customs]. He goes to-morrow to Englefield, and returns on Friday.

39. Geo. Nicholson to the Same. Has received moneys and paid the garrison [of Berwick]. Sends the muster book, and excuses his own non-attendance, on account of the administration of the Earl of Dunbar's effects. The bridge progressing.

44. Sir Dud. Carleton to the Same. The Prince of that State promises, at the King's request, to detain Wm. Seymour, if he should come into their dominions. Has explained that the King's displeasure with Seymour was not on religious grounds, but that he should presume to marry a near relation of His Majesty without leave, and contrary to promise, and then run away from his easy restraint.

45. Robt. Bury to the Same. The late Jane Shelley, wife of Wm. Shelley, being a Papist, demised lands, &c. in Shropshire, to raise money for Jesuits' Colleges. Mr. Grobban, of the Chancery, knows how her property was left. It was large; she having 3,000l. a year, and living sparingly.
July 20. 46. Petition of Rowland Yarrow, of Yarrow, in Tynedale, to Sir Jas. Altham and Sir Edw.
